Vizag Metro|Centre to support development of Vijayawada metro rail project
Hyderabad: The Centre has decided to approve and support the 26-km-long Vijayawada metro rail project.
The decision was conveyed by M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Urban Development Minister to the State on Thursday.
The Rs. 6,800-crore elevated project has been entrusted for development to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has already submitted project details.
However, there were some concerns whether the Vijayawada metro fits the bill for a metro project as it has a population of less than 20 lakh. The support from Centre would entitle the State to access necessary funds and support for the project.
Recently, DMRC as a consultant had submitted a detailed project report for Visakhapatam metro project as well.
The State Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen that both projects are executed by 2018. The State has entrusted the task of development to DMRC with E Sreedharan guiding both the projects.

Chennai Metro|Cost of Metro Rail work may go up by 20 per cent
Chennai: The cost of completing the underground Chennai Metro rail work along Anna Salai may go up at least by 20 per cent, say sources.
Recently, tenders were floated for completion of this underground network along the arterial road after Chennai Metro Rail’s erstwhile contractor Gammon India’s contract was terminated sometime ago.
“The cost may go up at least by 20 per cent owing to various reasons. We are in the process of estimating the exact amount. Soon, the new contractor will be fixed and subsequently, work on this stretch will resume,” an official of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) said.
In 2011, Gammon India, along with Russia-based Mosmetrostroy, secured a contract worth Rs.1,947 crore from CMRL for the construction of seven underground stations along Anna Salai, including LIC, Government Estate, Teynampet, Nandanam and Thousand Lights.

Chennai: Months have passed since the grand inauguration of the city’s Metro Rail service. And, commuters using the Koyambedu CMRL station have grievances to voice. The main cause of concern seems to be access to these stations.
For first-time riders, locating the Koyambedu station off Poonamallee High Road in Tiruvallur street, seems to be a daunting task owing to the inadequate number of signages leading to the station.
The entrance of the station, strangely, overlooks a junction with traffic moving from Poonamallee High Road to Koyambedu market, joining the arterial road.
