Delhi Metro|Over 60 security breaches reported in Delhi Metro system this year
New Delhi: Over 60 security breaches either by way of smuggling of unchecked baggages or unfrisked entry of passengers inside Delhi Metro stations have been detected this year, underlining the chinks in the armour of the rapid rail network used by an estimated 26 lakh people every day.
The number of incidents have rung alarm bells in the security establishment, especially after a recent incident where a bag containing a pistol was allegedly sneaked in by a man which he later used to shoot himself at the busy Connaught Place station.
According to an official data accessed, 24 cases were detected between January—September this year of people clandestinely getting inside the station area by hoodwinking CISF and other security guards deployed to mandatorily frisk each and every person going inside the Metro station area.
A total of 43 incidents have been reported during the same period where unchecked baggage was sneaked in through the unsecured areas in Metro stations.
“Work is on to plug loopholes and enhance security features here,” a senior official said.
Chennai Metro|CMRL to tap solar energy soon
Chennai: Three months after the launch of the Chennai Metro Rail service between Koyambedu and Alandur, officials are now looking at the possibility of tapping solar energy.
According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they are planning to install solar power panels either in the shed or the depot in Koyambedu. “We are yet to take a call on this. We estimate it would generate about 1000 kW power generation,” says an official.
The depot at Koyambedu, built at a cost of Rs. 198 crore, sprawls over 26 hectares. It houses maintenance workshops, stabling lines, test tracks, washing plants and an Operational Control Centre (OCC) from where the trains can be monitored and controlled. Currently, there are two main sub-stations and two auxiliary stations catering to Chennai Metro Rail, the official says.
Chennai Metro Rail is following in the footsteps of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has established solar power facilities with a generation capacity of 2.8 MWp.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday said it would ensure that work on the Kanpur Metro Rail commences by January 2016.During a meeting with metro officials, Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan issued directions to ensure that the necessary spadework is done this year so that the project can be kick-started by early next year.He also said it was proposed to develop two corridors of 33 km metro rail in Kanpur.The first corridor of 24 km is proposed from the IIT to Kalyanpur, Rawatpur, Motijheel, Navin Market, Bada Chauraha, Phoolbagh, Central railway station via Jhakarkati Bus terminal to Naubasta, while the second corridor of 9 km would start from Agriculture University and reach Barra-8 via Rawatpur, Kakadev, Vijaynagar chauraha.Ranjan directed the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation’s (LMRC) managing director to start construction work on the IIT-Jhakarkati route first.The chief secretary gave these directions during a presentation on the Kanpur Metro Rail project in Lucknow on Saturday.He said to develop and operate the metro rail in Kanpur, the Kanpur Metro Rail Corporation should be formed soon.Ranjan asked the Kanpur Development Authority, Housing Board and other such bodies to present a proposal for contributing funds for the project.He said the Kanpur Metro Rail should be developed in such a way that it works well as public transport for the next 50 years.

Chennai: Film producers or documentary makers desirous of shooting at a glitzy metro rail station or on a swanky train can do so for Rs 4 lakh an hour. While anything within the next quarter hour will be considered a quarter hour and producers charged a pro-rata amount, they will be allowed an hour to set up the equipment, a Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) notification has said.The October 8 notification said producers should also pay Rs 15 lakh as caution deposit. “Delhi and Mumbai metros also charge Rs 4 lakh a day for shooting,” said a CMRL official.The reaction from producers was a bit muted with Tamil Nadu Producers’ Council president ‘Kalaipuli’ S Thanu saying that anyone who can afford that kind of money to produce a movie can approach metro rail. “I cannot comment about the rate fixed by the metro rail authorities,” he said.The caution deposit, to be submitted as demand draft or banker’s cheque, will be refunded after the shooting bu the amount fixed for dispute/damage during the shooting, if any, will be deducted from the security deposit to be refunded, the notification said.Producers should apply to the deputy general manager-PD, CMRL, Administration Building, CMRL depot, PH Road, Koyambedu.An undertaking given to CMRL should also declare that the submitted script has no reference, direct or indirect, to terrorism and that metro rail will not be projected adversely. Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government claims to have obtained consent for getting a Rs 12,000-crore foreign loan for its ambitious Bhopal and Indore Metro rail projects. The funds will be available at much lower rates than those available in India.“We last month held discussions with officials of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which will arrange funding of Rs 12,000 crore at 0.3 per cent interest for the Bhopal and Indore Metro rail projects,” said Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan after returning from a 10-day business trip to Japan.During this trip, representatives of as many as 50 companies met Chouhan to explore prospects of investing in Madhya Pradesh.Chouhan said JICA would also fund Rs 1,200 crore for Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company and another Rs 2,000 crore for a group drinking water scheme. He added that Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) had agreed to promote Madhya Pradesh as a favourite destination to encourage Japanese companies to invest in the state. “(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi’s ‘Make In India’ campaign has come to fruition. Japanese and Korean companies, which barely showed interest in Indian destinations, have now committed themselves to investing in Madhya Pradesh,” Chouhan said.Another huge investment, Chouhan further said, would come from SoftBank Ltd. Delhi Metro|DMRC to replace lamps with LED lights at metro stations
New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to replace all the lamps at its stations, depots, and residential complexes with LED lights. The transition is expected to reduce the metro’s energy consumption by at least 40 per cent.
The Delhi Metro on Wednesday signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for having LED lighting and developing green building certification norms for metros globally.
“The MoU for LED lighting has been signed with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. Under the pact, energy-efficient LED lights will be installed at all metro stations, depots, and residential complexes. The move will not only lead to the consumption of 40 per cent less energy, but will also save approximately Rs. 7 crore annually,” said a metro official. The second MoU signed between the DMRC and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), an international green building certifying agency, was for jointly developing norms for the green building certification of metro stations and depots in India as well as across the globe.
As per the agreement, the DMRC and the GBCI will jointly rate metro stations and depots for green building certification not only in India, but across the world. “These initiatives are part of the DMRC’s efforts towards the development of eco-friendly infrastructure. The metro is developing all its stations under phase 3 as green buildings. The parking areas for phase-III will also have LED lights,” the official said.
Besides, all the metro stations on the Badarpur–Escorts Mujesar corridor as well as the Janpath, Mandi House and ITO stations, which were opened recently, have already received platinum green building ratings.

Nagpur: Untouched for over 100 years, the heritage land of Kasturchand Park is facing threat from Metro Rail. The Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) has asked the district administration to allot 2,538.28 sq.ft, which is as big as a residential plot in a middle-class locality, space in KP for metro station works. Activists have opposed the NMRCL’s proposal and threatened to launch an agitation against the district administration.The district administration has now sought the permission of the state government as well as the heritage conservation committee. The playground is owned by the government and its access is controlled by the district administration.The heritage conservation committee will meet on Friday to take a decision.
