Chennai Metro | Abnormal delay in metro project causing city life

Chennai: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is facing many roadblocks in its construction and missing its deadlines for completion of project.

Increased number of traffic congestion and traffic difficulties to the residents of the city, lot of hickups, diverted routes which causes delay to the citizens and hindrances in day to day basis.  Huge amount of dust errolled which causes various number of breathing diseases and inconvenience to dust allergic & aged people.

Delay in the project for a long time due to political changes & misunderstandings, No specified timeline when the entire project will be completed 100%. Increased number of crime related activities near the metro rail WIP areas due to lack of security at night times.

The existing sub urban trains are pretty older which could have been modernised & connected well for eg. Arakanom/Sullurpeta routes lack connectivity to Park station. This route has millions of people travelling on daily basis with every minute of people travelling.

“Chennai was meant to be a well planned city before the metro rail project could be commenced, but now there’s a serious doubt where Chennai is leading to in terms of the damaged roads, unsafely for aged people to walk on roads, unsafe for cars and bikes to ply on road, increasing diseases due to WIP of Metrorail for a VERY long time. Chennai was meant to be one of the top cities by its infrastructure years back but now we lack in proper roads / safer place to live.”, sources said.

Delhi Metro | Delhi Govt. clears phase-IV metro project of DMRC

New Delhi: Delhi Metro’s Phase IV, featuring six corridors measuring over a hundred kilometre that will take the network to the outer areas of the national capital and make the airport more accessible, was today approved by the Delhi government.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in a tweet, said the decision will “go a long way” in reducing congestion and pollution in the city.

“A big decision by Cabinet today,” he tweeted.

With the completion of 103-km-long Phase IV, the total length of the Metro corridor in the city will cross the 450-km mark. Its Detailed Project Report (DPR) was cleared in June 2016.

The mega project, as part of which 72 new stations will be built, will cost over Rs. 50,000 crore, which is to be borne equally by the state and the Centre, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

“The next clearance has to be given by the Union government. Once it is done, work will start. The project will come up within six years of initiation of construction work,” Mr Sisodia said.

The proposed corridors are Rithala – Narela (21.73 km), Inderlok – Indraprastha (12.58 km), Tughlakabad – Aerocity (20.20 km), Lajpat Nagar – Saket G-Block (7.96 km), Janakpuri (West) – RK Ashram (28.92 km) and Mukundpur-Maujpur (12.54 km).

While as per the revised DPR, the Tughlakabad line was to stretch till Terminal 1 of Airport, the proposal cleared by the Cabinet says it will end a station before.

“Some changes have been made,” Mr Sisodia said when asked about the changes brought in the final approved version of the project.

Of its total length, 67 km would be elevated and the rest underground, Mr Sisodia said, adding that the mass rapid transit’s ridership will increase by about 8.5 lakh once it is operational.

“Monthly progress report of the project will be submitted to the Delhi government,” Mr Sisodia said.

Earlier in June, the DPR prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was cleared despite demands by a few MLAs for bringing about minor tweaks in the routes.

The length of the currently operational corridors is around 213 km and Phase III, which will see a staggered launch in 2017, will add another 140 km to it.

Kochi Metro | KMRL to start integrated trial of metro train from January 9, 2017

Kochi: The all important integrated trials of Kochi Metro Rail under the supervision of the officials of the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will begin on January 9.

The Commissioner for Railway Safety will inspect the rolling stock, Operation Control Centre at Muttom and other infrastructure facilities on January 9, 10 and 11.

This will be followed by extensive integrated trial runs from mid-January. The synergised operation of trains in sync with signals, telecommunication and power will be tested and fine-tuned, if found necessary. The trial will be held along the Aluva-Palarivattom stretch.

Alstom has handed over three set of rakes while another is expected at the Muttom yard next week. All four sets of trains will be deployed for the integrated trials.

The trial run is considered critical, considering that Kochi Metro Rail will be the first in the country to conduct commercial train operations using the communications-based train control system (CBTC) for which a special software has been developed.

The trails will be controlled and monitored from the state-of the-art Operation Control Centre at Muttom. The trials will be followed by an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for desired safety standards. Mumbai Metro | MMRDA invites bids for 2 metro projects

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Wednesday invited tenders for two more metro railway projects — the DN Nagar to Mankhurd Metro 2B and the Wadala to Kasarvadavali Metro 4 corridors. The biggest relief for the MMRDA is that one of the most vexed issues — the height of the metro bridge over Central Railway’s Kurla and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus — has been solved.

The earlier avatar of the metro corridor towards Mankhurd, at the time called the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd metro line, had taken a severe hit after Central Railway authorities gave MMRDA a height band of 22 metres for the metro bridge over Kurla. At that height, officials had then said, the metro station would have been too high operationally as well as a problem when it came to easy evacuation of commuters in case of an emergency.

The 22-metre height band was at the time given to MMRDA because the railways had kept the lower height bands for its elevated rail corridors, namely the CST-Panvel high-speed line and the still-to-be-approved CST-Kalyan elevated corridor.

The issue has now been solved, MMRDA Additional Commissioner and Project Director Pravin Darade said on Wednesday. “We had several meetings with the railways as well as the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC).

We will now be constructing the metro bridge over Kurla tracks at a height of 13 metres.

The CST-Panvel elevated corridor will now run at a height of 22 metres,” Darde said.

The tenders invited on Wednesday has the 23.5-kilometre-long DN Nagar to Mankhurd Metro 2B corridor, costing Rs10,986 crore in five packages. These five packages are ESIC Nagar to Khira Nagar, Saraswat Nagar to ILFS in BKC, MTNL Metro to Chembur, Diamond Garden to Mandale (Depot) and one package dedicated to the design and construction of elevated viaducts for railway crossings near Kurla and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on CR.

The tenders to design and construct elevated viaduct and stations on the 32-kilometre Wadala to Kasarvadavali (Rs14,549 crore) have also been broken into five packages, said MMRDA. The five packages are Wadala to Amar Mahal Junction, Garodia Nagar to Surya Nagar, Gandhi Nagar to Sonapur, Mulund Fire Station to Majiwada and Kapurbawdi to Kasarvadavli.

Delhi Metro | About 91% pickpockets caught by CISF are women

New Delhi: Women constitute over 91 per cent of pickpockets apprehended by the CISF in the Delhi Metro network this year, reveals data. The full-year data, updated till the middle of December, states that of the 479 pickpockets held by the force, an overwhelming 438 were women.

“The modus operandi employed by these women was to either carry a child or travel in a group to con and pick a purse or other valuables of a traveller,” a senior official said.

Recently, the CISF had busted a gang of women who had allegedly robbed a US-based woman of jewellery and valuables on a metro.

Last year, 93 per cent of the total number of pickpockets apprehended by the CISF in the metro network were women.

In 2014, over 300 women were intercepted for pickpocketing, making them about 94 per cent of those held. In 2013, of the total 466 pickpockets held across various stations, 421 were women.

The CISF regularly undertakes special operations at metro stations to keep a check on crime.

This year, it undertook over 100 operations to check pickpocketing in the metro network that carries an estimated 26 lakh commuters every day.

Hyderabad Metro | HMRL achieves overall 75% progress in metro rail project in the city

Hyderabad: The ongoing 72-km elevated Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) project has achieved 75% overall progress, its Managing Director NVS Reddy said on . “2016 has been an eventful year for the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. Several long pending properties have been acquired and contentious issues resolved at some critical locations to take the project forward,” Reddy said. During the year, an amount of Rs 2,902 crore was spent (Rs 2742 crore by L&TMRH and Rs 160 crore by HMR), he said.

“Cumulative expenditure on the project so far is Rs 14,172 crore (Rs 12,143 crore by L&T MRHL on both Metro Rail and Real Estate and Rs 2,029 crore by HMRL). “With completion of 2340 foundations in 61 km, 2231 pillars (58 km) and viaduct in 50 km, and completion of major portion of works in overhead electrical traction, signalling and telecommunication systems and at stations, the project has achieved 75% overall progress,” Reddy stated in a release.

L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) is developing the 72-km elevated HMR project which will have three corridors and 66 stations. The HMR chief further said all the 57 three-car trains from Hyundai Rotem, South Korea, have been received and sanction of Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for the Miyapur SR Nagar section (12 km) of corridor-I was also received. The HRM project is the world’s largest public-private partnership project (PPP) in the sector.

The metro network will cover a total distance of around 72 km across three corridors. The project was initially scheduled to be completed by July 2017, but delays like changes in alignment, land acquisition and other issues have resulted in the project overshooting the deadline. Authorities had earlier said all three Metro Rail corridors, including the one passing through the Old City, would be completed by December 2018.

Caterpillar Train | Haryana Govt plans to run Caterpillar Trains in Gurugram city

Gurugram: Haryana has taken the lead to set up a pilot corridor for the “Caterpillar Train”, a new concept for urban mass-transit solution designed by an Indian Railway officer which won a global award at the MIT in the United States earlier this year. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has instructed his office to coordinate with local authorities in Gurgaon and figure out a way forward, especially in terms of space, for the pilot corridor.

Ashwani Upadhyaya (43), the railway officer who co-invented the Caterpillar Train concept, along with Emil Jacob — both PhD scholars at MIT — met Khattar on December 8 in Delhi.

“The CM liked the idea. He instructed officers to take it forward, so local authorities have been informed. We are looking at a ‘Proof of Concept’ at this stage,” said Rakesh Gupta, additional private secretary to the CM.

Accordingly, Upadhyaya held meetings with Gurgaon deputy commissioner T L Satya Prakash and police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar to discuss a few possible areas for the corridor.

The busy area between HUDA City Centre and Sushant Lok is one of the areas they have zeroed in on, although he talked about an area near the Ambience Mall with Khattar.

“I have been asked to take help from the state’s GIS department to select a suitable corridor. Police were of the view that the corridor may be best suited for a stretch that has transport demand but does not have proper bus service yet. But they said we were free to decide a stretch of our choice after proper scouting,” said Upadhyaya.

Jacob also arrived in India to help scout for a place. The estimate is about $3 million for a “stripped down” pilot system and about $20 million for a full-fledged automated system, he said. The Caterpillar Train, or

C-Train, envisages a citywide network of lightweight, elevated train coaches running at about 100 kmph on a track supported by poles bent into arches.

Delhi Metro | DMRC makes steady progress towards completion of phase 3 projects

New Delhi: During the year 2016, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) took some decisive steps towards the completion of corridors currently under construction as part of Phase 3. Efforts to improve the commuting experience of the people also continued with the introduction of some new facilities. The following are the main highlights of the year for the Delhi Metro:

New Metro trains enabled with the ‘Unattended Train Operation (UTO)’ mode start trials

The trial run of India’s first ever Metro train, equipped to run on the ‘Unattended Train Operation’ mode, was ceremonially flagged off on 17th May by the Union Minister for Urban Development, Sh. M. Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi Chief Minister, Sh. Arvind Kejriwal.

The inaugural train moved out from the Mukundpur depot and travelled up to the Majlis Park Metro station of the Majlis Park – Shiv Vihar Metro corridor of Phase 3 (Pink Line).  These highly sophisticated trains are equipped with technology which will eventually support driverless operations. These trains will also be more energy efficient and commuter friendly.

Trial runs commence on close to 30 kilometres of new Metro lines

During the year, trial runs commenced on ITO – Kashmere Gate section (5.17 kms, violet line), Botanical Garden – Kalkaji Mandir (13 kms) and Janakpuri West – Terminal 1 – IGI Airport (10 kms) sections of the Magenta Line after the completion of civil work on these stretches.

On the Janakpuri West – Terminal 1 – IGI Airport section, to expedite the process of commencing trials, an entire six coach train was lowered on the tracks near the Sadar Bazar Cantonment station using cranes and trailers recently.

The train was unloaded on the ramp near Sadar Bazar Cantonment through a carefully planned operation, in which the coaches were lowered near the ramp (the location where the alignment goes underground from elevated) and positioned on the tracks with the help of special high capacity cranes and trailers. The process needed absolute precision to avoid any physical damage to the trains or the civil structure.

DMRC completes all tunnelling assignments of Phase 3

DMRC successfully wrapped up all the tunnelling works of Phase 3 with the completion of a 1.25 kilometre long tunnel between Vasant Vihar and Munirka on the Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden Magenta Line on 29th November. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) boring the tunnel from Vasant Vihar broke through at Munirka last evening in the presence of DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh and other senior officials.

With this tunnel breakthrough, DMRC in Phase 3 completed one of the largest ever tunnelling projects taken up in any urban area all over the world  where a record 30 TBMs were used to bore close to 80 kilometres of underground tunnels (combining the length of both tunnels for to and fro movement of trains). The total underground corridor length in Phase 3 including the stations is about 54 kilometres.

The quantum of underground work in Phase 3 can be gauged from the fact that in the last phase of Delhi Metro’s construction, only 35 kilometres was underground and in Phase 1, the underground component was 13 kilometres. Therefore, the underground work of Phase 3 was even more than the combined work undertaken in the first two phases.

Commuters get additional facilities

The Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate Metro stations as well as the stations on the Airport Line got equipped with Wi-Fi facilities. There are plans to introduce similar facilities in the other stations as well. In another initiative, smart card recharge facility has been made possible through the e-wallet mobile application Paytm. This new step has helped the commuters recharge their smart cards without cash transactions.

Delhi Metro creates more ridership records, keeps people’s faith

The Delhi Metro continued to break more ridership records during the year and further established itself as the transportation backbone of the city. On 17thAugust, over 33 lakh people (33, 36,550) travelled on the Metro for the first time ever throughout the day, which happened to be the eve of Rakshbandhan. A few days earlier, on 12th August, the Airport Line also broke the 50,000 mark with 50,077 passengers travelling by it in a day.

Delhi Metro | 10 DMRC stations to go cashless from 1 January 2017

New Delhi: Ten stations of the Delhi Metro will go “cashless” from 1 January letting commuters recharge smart cards and buy tokens using digital platforms.

Metro said the decision has been taken to encourage people to embrace the Centre’s vision of a cashless economy. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief Mangu Singh said people will have the option to pay through mobile wallets such as Paytm in this regard.

“The cashless transactions for token and smart card purchase or top up at these stations can be done through Paytm by using QR-code, which will be displayed at token counters or customer care centre of these stations,” Singh said.

However, initially, at least one counter will have the option of cash. The stations where the measure will be rolled out are Rohini East and Rohini West on Red Line; MG Road Station on Yellow Line; Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Nirman Vihar, Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri West, and Noida Sector-15 on Blue Line; and Nehru Place and Kailash Colony on Violet Line.

“These stations have 70% or more smart card users as a result of which cash transactions here are moderate in comparison to other stations and have adequate mobile connectivity as well,” an official said. Refunds, if any, will also be done through Paytm accounts instead of cash and users will receive the refunded amount within four days in their e-wallet.

After facing criticism over its plan to make 10 stations “cashless”, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation clarified that the option to use cash in Ticket Vending Machines and counters will still be operational.

“Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) and POS (point of sale) machines are also available at these stations where a passenger can easily get his transaction done in cash/ credit/debit card,” the statement said.

Pune Metro | PM Modi to lay foundation stone of Pune Metro rail project

Pune: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the Pune Metro rail project on December 24 and the district administration has begun preparations for the PM’s visit. The Union cabinet had recently approved the proposal for Pune Metro and the local BJP unit had declared that the foundation stone would be laid by the Prime Minister, despite the NCP, which leads the Pune Municipal Corporation, passing a resolution, along with the Congress and the MNS, on NCP chief Sharad Pawar laying the foundation stone of the project.

The event is important as the election code of conduct for the PMC polls might come into force after that and the political parties don’t want to miss a chance to claim credit for the project.

The function is scheduled to be held at the SSPMS ground and the district administration has started preparing for it. The implementing agency — Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd — has started preparing for the project and its Managing Director, Brajesh Dixit, visited the city to review the work plan.

“The Pune Metro rail work will be started without any further delay. The Metro team has undertaken the various requisite surveys before the actual start of work. The geo-technical survey would be taken up to ascertain the kind of soil where the Metro route would be laid,” said Dixit.

He added that the detailed project report of Pune Metro rail was ready, adding that the alignment would be changed, if necessary, to meet the technical specifications to lay the Metro track.

“We would also use social networking sites to reach out to citizens on the implementation of Metro rail in the city,” he said.
