The Mumbai Metro Line-3 spans 33.5 kilometres underground, from Colaba to Bandra to SEEPZ. It comprises 27 key stations, 26 underground and one at grade level. Project Progress Update  as of 31st January 2024 is: 

• Overall project progress – 88.5%

• Overall civil works – 98.2%

• Overall station work – 94.6%

• Overall system work – 66.7%

• Track Works – 73.7%

• Tunnelling 100% completed 

• Total 42 breakthroughs achieved out of 42.

• Depot Works – 98.6% 

What is this buzz about the extension of Metro Line 3? When will the commercial operations on Metro Line 3 be launched? 

MMRC is also working on the south extension of line 3 till Navy Nagar, which is approx. 2.5km with a station near TIFR. The work of this extension is in the DPR stage. 

The Commercial operations on Phase I from Aarey to BKC are expected to commence by May 2024.

Please share the initiatives MMRCL has undertaken under your leadership to ensure last-mile connectivity for commuters.

Lat mile Connectivity for the Metro users is being ensured through the following initiatives: 

  1. Integration: Metro-3 will integrate with other Metros, Monorails, Suburban Rail, Domestic and International Airport Terminals, and ST Bus Services. It will also be connected to six major business and employment centres, including Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Lower Parel, BKC, and SEEPZ/MIDC.
  2. Last-mile Connectivity: Line 3 will provide easy access to over 30 educational institutes, 13 hospitals, 14 religious places and over 30 recreational facilities across the alignment.
  3. Subways, etc. Metro-3 will also facilitate last-mile connectivity in and around the station area through subways, pedestrian walkways, bus routes, etc.  

People have been walking on the Mumbai Metro Line 7 tracks recently due to unforeseen circumstances. What are your views on this incident, and how do you plan to equip Metro Line 3 to avoid similar scenarios in the future?

Metro Line-3 is a fully underground metro corridor. All 26 U/G stations are equipped with full-length platform screen doors (PSD), which act as a barrier between the passenger waiting area and platform edge to avoid any accidental fall, mishap, and trespassing at the stations.

Can you provide information about the projected ridership numbers for the upcoming Mumbai Metro Line 3?

Once operational, Metro-3 will cater to 17 lakh passengers daily, ferrying approximately 2500 passengers at a time and 10 Lakh around the catchment area.

Metro Line 3 connects significant hubs like BKC and Churchgate. Please inform me about any new developments introduced to manage and facilitate the flow of people at such major train stations.

The initiatives undertaken are: 

  1. The proposed Churchgate station of Metro-3 is located below Jamshedji Tata Road, near the existing suburban Churchgate station, facilitating easy transit for commuters from the suburban railway line to metro line-3. 
  2. CSMT metro station will offer a convenient interchange facility via subway, connecting with the existing MCGM subway and allowing seamless transit between the suburban railway line, Metro-3, and other important locations nearby. 
  3. BKC station is one of the longest stations of Line 3 and has an interchange facility with the proposed Metro Line 2B. The station will also provide subway connectivity to its commuters, proposed from BKC Metro Station to NHSRCL Terminus at a distance of 1.3 km, passing below Vakola Nalah/Mithi River to ease commuting to major business hubs, offices, etc., within the vicinity. 
  4. Vidhan Bhavan metro station will also have subway connectivity, providing seamless transit to Vidhan Bhavan, Mantralaya, and the New Administrative Building.

Alstom-built Trains & CBTC System Kick in as Agra Metro Begins its Operations

AGRA (Metro Rail News): In a landmark moment, the historic city of Agra witnessed the commencement of metro service with the inaugural run of the world-class trains built by Alstom. These new Movia metros are equipped with an advanced Cityflo 650 signalling solution to ensure safe, reliable, and sustainable mobility for commuters. The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri, flagged the first train. Narendra Modi, virtually and the Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri. Yogi Adityanath, from the Taj Mahal Metro Station.

Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has designed these trains at its engineering centre in Hyderabad with the signalling solution developed at Gurgaon & Bangkok. These trains have been manufactured at Alstom’s state-of-the-art Savli (Gujarat) facility under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. Embedded with modern energy-efficient propulsion systems and regenerative braking that reduce energy consumption, this is a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to other modes of transportation.

Alstom delivered the first trainset to Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in September 2021 in Kanpur, and the Kanpur revenue service was inaugurated by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi, in December 2021. So far, 26 trainsets have been delivered to Agra (9) and Kanpur (17) / UMPRC. Each trainset can accommodate approximately 960 passengers in the three-car configuration. Over two million city residents are expected to benefit directly and indirectly from the Agra Metro Rail Project.

Shri Sushil Kumar, MD, UPMRC, said Uttar Pradesh Metro has the privilege of starting the Metro projects in the fastest phase, and Lucknow was started in three years, while Kanpur priority section was started in two years, two months and now the underground section constructed and started in less than two years in Agra. The fastest train commissioning was one of the biggest reasons for achieving this target. As most of the prototype testing of the train was done in Kanpur, as the Kanpur and Agra trains are the same, we were able to save almost one year in the commissioning of trains and interface with signalling; that was a huge saving, which was achieved for the first time in India. Support of the Alstom team was instrumental in the entire journey”.

Inspiration from Uttar Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage combined with best-in-class design has resulted in an attractive look for the metro fleet. Built with stainless-steel car bodies, the air-conditioned cars will have automated sliding doors, comfortable seating and standing spaces, and dedicated areas for entry of specially-abled, who use wheelchairs and modern passenger information systems, combining to provide an accessible and welcoming environment for passengers. The aerodynamic modular design of the new Movia metros will offer a host of safety, security, and environmental benefits, along with a great passenger experience. 

The trains will be equipped with Flexx metro bogies and the Mitrac propulsion system to increase energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and ensure the new trains meet the highest environmental standards.

Agra Metro is equipped with Alstom’s advanced moving block CBTC solution, Cityflo 650.  This includes a modern ATP system with continuous supervision and updates of this information through transmissions from the radio. Hon’ble Prime Minister Inaugurates and Flags Off 17 Km Long Duhai to Modi Nagar North RRTS Stretch

GHAZIABAD (Metro Rail News): Extending the services of Namo Bharat Train, the Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurated today the additional 17 km stretch of RRTS from Duhai to Modinagar North section through video conferencing from Kolkata. 

The inauguration function held at Muradnagar RRTS station was graced by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Petroleum & Natural Gas; Shri General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Road Transport & Highways; Shri Rajendra Agrawal, Member of Parliament; Shri Laxmikant Bajpai, Member of Parliament; Shri Satya Pal Singh, Member of Parliament, and other dignitaries.

With this, an additional 17 km stretch from Duhai to Modi Nagar North on the Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut RRTS corridor is ready for operations beyond the operational priority section. This extension encompasses three stations: Muradnagar, Modi Nagar South, and Modi Nagar North. With the inauguration of this additional 17 km section, Namo Bharat services will be seamlessly available on 34 km of the Delhi – Meerut RRTS corridor, incorporating eight stations from Sahibabad to Modinagar North.

The foundation stone for India’s inaugural RRTS corridor, linking Delhi to Meerut, was laid by the Honorable Prime Minister in March 2019. Remarkably, within just four and a half years, the commissioning of the priority section, comprising five stations, was accomplished, setting new standards in infrastructure development. The same has been started for passenger operations by the Hon’ble Prime Minister in October 2023. 

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Petroleum & Natural Gas, stated, “The launching of an additional RRTS section from Murad Nagar to Modi Nagar North Station marks a momentous occasion. Under the esteemed leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, this project embodies ‘Gati se Pragati as the work on the entire RRTS corridor continues at the war footing. Namo Bharat is New India’s vehicle of progress and empowerment. This semi-high-speed rail seamlessly connects the urban nodes across NCR with the mainstream of development. Namo Bharat heralds a tectonic shift in connecting cities seamlessly, promoting public transport usage, enhancing accessibility of markets and opportunities, and boosting economic growth. It is a game-changer towards a smarter, more connected region. Initiatives like the RRTS enable seamless transportation, facilitating work commute and enhancing quality of life.

The Namo Bharat train service will be started on the newly opened section (Murad Nagar to Modi Nagar North) from 6:00 am on 8th March 2024 (Friday). The train service will be available for commuters from 06:00 am to 8:00 pm for the entire section from Sahibabad to Modinagar North. The First Train in both directions will commence operations at 06:00 am, and the Last Train will depart from the terminal stations i.e. Sahibabad and Modi Nagar North, at 8:00 pm. 

For the convenience of commuters, NCRTC provides various ticketing options like Digital QR code-based Ticket through the NCRTC Mobile Application, ‘RRTS Connect’ by ‘one-tap’ or origin-destination selection, Paper QR code-based tickets, which can be generated via Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) or bought from UPI-enabled ticket vending machines. These TVMs also recharge the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). Apart from this, commuters can buy the RRTS commuter card. Aligned with the Government of India’s “One Nation, One Card” vision, this commuter card is a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), which allows the usage of one card in all transit systems and anywhere card payment is feasible. 

Every Namo Bharat train has six coaches. There are 72 seats available per Standard Coach and 62 in the Premium Coach. Next to the premium coach, one coach is reserved for women. Also, a few seats are reserved for women, especially abled people and senior citizens in each coach.

Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the RRTS stations are being seamlessly integrated with airports, railway stations, metro stations, ISBTs, and city bus stops, creating a network of networks of public transit systems. This transformative approach to regional mobility aims to decentralise economic activity, improve access to employment, education, and healthcare, and significantly reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

The RRTS, a state-of-the-art rail-based transit system, boasts a design speed of 180 kmph and an operation speed of 160 kmph. It is geared towards bridging distances within the National Capital Region (NCR), bringing communities and destinations closer. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, stretching 82 km, will shrink the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to less than an hour. Passing through urban hubs like Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar, it promises to revolutionise regional transportation.

Bezalel has been with the company since its inception a little over 13 years ago. He has served as the VP of R&D  & CTO and has been responsible for many strategic business initiatives. 

Nir Erez, the Co-Founder of Moovit and CEO for the last 13 years, will assume the role of  President and strategic advisor to the CEO.

Anurag Jain Appointed as the New Secretary of MoHUA

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): According to a recent order from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Anurag Jain, Secretary of Road Transport and Highways, has been assigned the additional responsibility of serving as the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Manoj Joshi, previously serving as Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), has been reassigned to the Ministry of Rural Development, where he will now be Secretary within the Department of Land Resources.

Anurag Jain, IAS

Jain, an IAS officer from the 1989 Madhya Pradesh cadre, is recognised as a proactive official within the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tenure 

According to the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) notification, Jain will remain as the MoHUA secretary until the appointment of a regular successor or until further notice, whichever occurs first.

CMRS Inspects Duhai-Modinagar Stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad RRTS Corridor

GHAZIABAD (Metro Rail News): The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CMRS) completed the two-day inspection of the Duhai-Modinagar stretch of the RRTS corridor yesterday. 

The Inspection 

The CMRS team conducted a statutory inspection on Monday, evaluating the line’s viaduct and standard gauge tracks, which were installed by Larsen & Toubro. On Tuesday, the team assessed passenger amenities, safety measures, and control room facilities across all three stations.

Trial Runs 

NCRTC conducted the trial run of the Namo Bharat trains on the 12.1 km stretch between Modinagar South & Meerut South on the 82 km Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor at the end of December last year. 

Covering stations 

On Thursday, the NCRTC announced that work on the Meerut (south) station is still pending, potentially delaying its inclusion in the upcoming section slated for opening. The NCRTC plans to concentrate on a 17km stretch, excluding the Meerut (south) station.

Completion so far

When this segment is launched, a stretch of 34.1 km along the Delhi – Meerut RRTS line, extending from Sahibabad to Modinagar North, will commence operations. It will feature seven elevated stations along the main line and one at-grade at Duhai Depot.

Delhi-Meerut RRTS 

The Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a comprehensive mass rapid transit network spanning 82.15 kilometres, linking Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan with Ghaziabad and Meerut. The construction of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is currently in progress, with a total expenditure of nearly Rs 30,000 crore. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the initial phase of the priority corridor, covering 17 kilometres and featuring five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.

On October 20th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s first RAPIDX train, Namo Bharat, off Sahibabad Station. These trains are engineered to reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h, offering ticket prices ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 50 for standard coaches and Rs 50 to Rs 100 for premium coaches.

The RRTS initiative encompasses semi-high-speed rail corridors connecting Delhi to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Alwar in Rajasthan, and Panipat in Haryana.

PM Modi Takes Ride in India’s First Underwater Metro in Kolkata with Students 

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News):  Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a ride in India’s first underwater Metro in its inaugural drive.

The East-West Metro currently covers a distance of 9.2km, extending from Sector V to Sealdah. The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), responsible for the 16km corridor between Sector V and Howrah Maidan, has encountered challenges leading to the decision to limit operations to a truncated route from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan starting at the end of this year, bypassing further extension beyond Sealdah.

PM Modi to Inaugurate Agra Metro Rail Service on March 6, 2024

AGRA (Metro Rail News): Agra, renowned for the iconic Taj Mahal, is on the brink of a significant transformation with the inauguration of the Agra Metro Rail Service on March 6, 2024, by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. This milestone event heralds the dawn of metro services in Agra, making it the 21st city in India to join the thriving Metro Rail network.

Across India, metro systems serve as vital arteries of urban transportation, with nearly 1 crore people relying on them daily, traversing a vast network of 905 kilometers spread across 20 cities. As the nation continues to prioritize public transportation infrastructure, an additional 958 kilometers of metro network is currently under construction.

The Agra Metro project has achieved remarkable progress, with approximately 6 kilometers of metro network completed each month, underscoring a commendable feat in urban transportation. Designed to serve Agra’s 26 lakh residents and approximately 60 lakh annual tourists, the two corridors spanning 29.4 kilometers will seamlessly connect major railway stations, bus depots, colleges, markets, and prominent tourist destinations.

With the inauguration of the Agra Metro Rail service, Agra becomes the sixth city in Uttar Pradesh to embrace a Metro network, joining the ranks of Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, and Kanpur. As the fourth most populous city in Uttar Pradesh, Agra is poised to reap the benefits of efficient and modern metro rail services, contributing to the state’s rapid development.

The expeditious implementation of metro projects by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) sets a precedent for efficiency and innovation. Notably, the Agra Metro project achieved the remarkable feat of completing a 3 km underground stretch, including a tunnel, in just 11 months. Moreover, the elevated and underground sections of the Priority Corridor were completed in 29 and 23 months, respectively, making it the fastest underground metro project in India.

Patna Metro: A Paradigm Shift in Tier-2 Urban Mobility

Introduction

Patna Metro boasts two corridors with an impressive length of 30.91 km, inhabiting the capital city of Bihar, Patna. Patna is the largest city in Bihar, with a population of over 2.5 million and a total area of 250 square kilometres. 

The city boasts of the Sone, Gandak and Punpun rivers and the pilgrimage centres of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, making it an attractive destination for many people, businesses, and tourists worldwide. The city is a central Urban Centre that hosts a massive influx of tourists and bread-earners from worldwide and inner areas of Bihar, respectively. Such features make it necessary for the authority to make an accessible, robust, and overall punctual public transportation system available for the public and tourists. 

Patna Metro- Approval & DPR 

It is a  31.66 km long Mass Rapid Transit system inhabiting the city of  Patna. Its story begins with the announcement of Metro Policy by the then Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs in  November 2011. The Bihar government awarded the assignment of feasibility study preparation of the Detailed Project Report to Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) for the Patna Metro railway project in 2013 at an estimated cost of ₹13,411.24 crore for Phase 1. 

Further, the Bihar government decided to equip the city either with a metro or a monorail system.  The Bihar Cabinet had allotted the Patna Metro work to DMRC after approval from the central government in February 2019 on a nomination basis, which will complete the work on the “Deposit Work Method” at a project cost of Rs 482.87 crore. Afterwards, in August 2019, the Bihar government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to construct the first phase of the Patna Metro Rail Project.

Further, the DMRC ushered some significant changes in the DPR of the project alignment, engendering another interchange at Khemni Chowk, the elimination of Line-1’s depot at Aitwarpur and the addition of two new stations at Ramkrishna Nagar and Jaganpura.

Funding Pattern 

The project is expected to be built and operated on a Public Private Partnership model. The cost of Phase 1 is estimated to be ₹13,411.24 crore. Patna Government has also secured an ODA loan of INR 5,521 Crores from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which accounts for nearly 60% of the project’s cost. 

“Considering the growing population and industries in the city, I am sure this project will improve the life and business in Patna, and I hope this will be considered the best example of a metro project in Tier-2 cities”– Mr SAITO Mitsunori, Chief Representative of JICA India. 

It is JICA’s first metro project in any Tier-2 city of India and the 7th metro project in India after Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad.

YFC Projects – Montecarlo JV launched their first 27.90-meter-long U-girder for the viaduct of Patna Metro’s 16.86 km Line-1 connecting Danapur Cantonment – Khemni Chak on 15th September 2023. This milestone was recorded in roughly 21 months from the award of the contract, which is way beyond the average time taken by contractors elsewhere.

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has been awarded a Rs. 11.34 crore contract for manufacturing and supplying 1200 MT of Class A grade rails for Patna Metro’s New ISBT Depot on the Patna Junction Railway Station – New ISBT line. 

Multi-modal Connectivity 

The authorities concerned with the planning and operationalising the Patna metro have envisioned turning it into an integrated transportation hub where all the means of public transport will be readily available. 

As per the latest reports, the existing population of 26.23 lakh of the Patna agglomeration area is expected to benefit from the Patna Metro Rail Project directly and indirectly. The approved corridors will have Multimodal Integration with Railway Stations, ISBT stations, and feeder networks of Buses, Intermediate Public Transport (IPT) and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT). 

Such an arrangement would ensure a robust, punctual, well-connected model of a metro system available in a tier 2 city like Patna. Additionally, the robustness of the integrated model will contribute to making Patna a better urban centre with robust transportation arrangements to serve the upcoming traffic and facilitate the impetus required to enhance the urban centre. 

A City in Transition

Patna is witnessing stark changes in its course. It includes increased registration of two-wheelers and cars and rapid urbanisation in the city. It has pushed for increased traffic on the roads, necessitating an alternative Public Transportation Model to be envisioned. Additionally, the increase in influx has left the existing public transportation system redundant owing to overload, leading to inefficiency. 

Additionally, the provision of the metro would also help Patna not to get polluted by the increase in vehicle traffic, contributing to the carbon content in the environment. Instead, this would make way for a better, cleaner, desirable environment for the residents of Patna. It would also add to the experience and convenience of the daily commuters as an accessible, punctual and best-in-class mobility solution will be available to them. 

Eventually, the metro would solve the problems of traffic congestion on the roads as well as the concerns related to environmental pollution. 

Significant Innovations in the Project

Patna Museum Tunnel


The Patna metro Project entails an innovative 1.5 km pedestrian tunnel connecting Patna Museum and Bihar Museum. It’s a subway connecting both museums, between Bailey Road and Chajju Bagh, by an 8-meter diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) at a depth of 16.5 meters. The pedestrian tunnel will be located above the twin tunnel, on Bailey Roa, of Patna Metro’s Line 1, running between Danapur Cantonment and Khemni Chak, with a vertical clearance of 6.5 meters. 

The air-conditioned tunnel will be an art gallery equipped with battery-operated golf carts. The entry/exit structures on either side include a security checkpoint, goods lift (service elevator) and restrooms.

Green Impact 

The project aims to reduce emissions and adverse environmental impact by creating a public transport-oriented city. It will also contribute towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in GDP intensity by 2030 to 33-35% compared to 2005, which the Government of India is working on under the “National Determined Contribution (NDC)” goals based on the Paris Agreement.

Telangana CM to Lay the Foundation Stone for the MGBS to Falaknuma stretch of Hyderabad Metro on March 8 

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will be laying the foundation stone of the 5.5-kilometre stretch from MGBS to Falaknuma of the corridor II Green Line JBS to Falaknuma on March 8th. 

New Alignment 

The new alignment will pass through Darulshifa – Purani Haveli – Etebar Chowk – Alijakotla – Mir Momin Daira – Haribowli -Shalibanda – Shamsheergunj – Aliabad and ends at Falaknuma Metro Rail station.

Old Alignment 

The CM remarked that the earlier metro alignment ran along the G0111 area, where the scope of development remains limited, and there is already an excellent transport facility in the form of ORR. 

Stations on the Corridor 

There would be four stations: Salarjung Museum, Charminar, Shalibanda, and Falaknuma. Despite a 500-meter distance between the stations and monuments, two stations have been named after the Salarjung Museum and Charminar, considering their historical importance.

Further Extension

The line will be further extended by another 1.5 km from Falaknuma to Chandrayangutta, which will be developed as a major interchange station on the newly planned airport line of Nagole-LB Nagar-Chandrayangutta-Mailardevpally-P7 Road-Shamshabad Airport, he added.

Connectivity Advantage 

The primary aim of the recently formulated metro rail routes is to offer affordable public transportation to a more significant segment of the population. The government is committed to realising its objective of making metro rail services accessible to economically disadvantaged and middle-income groups. According to official statements, this will be achieved through an extensive expansion of metro rail connectivity to encompass all areas within the city.

Hyderabad Metro 

The Hyderabad Metro, India’s third-longest operational metro network, is a significant rapid transit system that greatly enhances the city’s transportation infrastructure. On November 28, 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 30-kilometer-long stretch from Miyapur to Nagole, featuring 24 stations. This inauguration marked the opening of India’s longest rapid transit metro line at once, with an estimated cost of ₹18,800 crore.

As of February 2020, approximately 490,000 commuters rely on the metro daily. Phase I of the project consists of three lines:

1. Red Line (Line 1) – LB Nagar to Miyapur, spanning 29 km with 27 stations.

2. Green Line (Line 2) – JBS to Falaknuma, covering 15 km and featuring 15 stations.

3. Blue Line (Line 3) – Nagole to Raidurg, extending over 28 km and incorporating 24 stations.

PM Modi Likely to Inaugurate the Duhai-Modinagar Stretch of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor on March 6th

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely inaugurate the 17km Duhai to Modinagar stretch of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor. 

Trial Runs 

NCRTC conducted the trial run of the Namo Bharat trains on the 12.1 km stretch between Modinagar South & Meerut South on the 82 km Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor at the end of December last year. 

CMRS Nod 

The CMRS inspection for the stretch is already underway & the safety clearance/approval may likely come at the latest by the end of Monday or Tuesday, ahead of the likely inauguration on Wednesday. 

An Online Inauguration 

PM Modi is likely to inaugurate the stretch virtually during his visit to West Bengal, from where he will also inaugurate several other metro projects. 

Covering stations 

On Thursday, the NCRTC announced that work on the Meerut (south) station is still pending, potentially delaying its inclusion in the upcoming section slated for opening. The NCRTC plans to concentrate on a 17km stretch, excluding the Meerut (south) station.

Delhi-Meerut RRTS 

The Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a comprehensive mass rapid transit network spanning 82.15 kilometres, linking Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan with Ghaziabad and Meerut. The construction of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is currently in progress, with a total expenditure of nearly Rs 30,000 crore. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the initial phase of the priority corridor, covering 17 kilometres and featuring five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.

On October 20th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s first RAPIDX train, Namo Bharat, off Sahibabad Station. These trains are engineered to reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h, offering ticket prices ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 50 for standard coaches and Rs 50 to Rs 100 for premium coaches.

The RRTS initiative encompasses semi-high-speed rail corridors connecting Delhi to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Alwar in Rajasthan, and Panipat in Haryana.

MVR Infra Bags Bangalore Metro’s Whitefield Extension Contract

BANGALORE (Metro Rail News): M Venkata Rao Infra Projects Pvt Ltd has bagged the Bangalore Metro’s extension contract, reaching 616 meters in the pre-existing Lines. 

Purple Line Extension 

This contract includes extending the existing Purple line by 588 meters beyond Whitefield. It will take the Bangalore Metro’s purple line across the Indian Railways’ Bengaluru – Chennai line and up to Belathur Colony on Whitefield – Hoskote Road.

Depot Extension 

The contract’s scope also includes building a small 28m extension of the under-construction Whitefield Depot’s 3rd line. ITD Cementation India Ltd built both this and Reach 1B’s mainline.

Bids Invited 

BMRCL invited bids for this package in October 2023, with an estimated cost of Rs 42.30 Crore and an 18-month completion deadline. 

Scope of the Contract 

The scope of the contract entails the extension of the metro line by a length of 588 m beyond the Whitefield Metro Station in Reach-1B and the extension of the 3rd line at the Whitefield Depot by a length of 28 m for Bangalore Metro Rail Project, Phase-2.

Convenient for Masses 

The Whitefield (Kadugodi) currently uses only one platform to serve passengers. Since the line ends only 14 meters beyond the station, inbound trains are forced to arrive at a restricted slower speed.

This new extension train reversal cross-over track facility will greatly improve the train throughput, consequently allowing for high-frequency train operations in the future. The Crowd management at the station finds a solution to the quagmire. 

Bangalore Metro 

Bengaluru Metro, known as Namma Metro, is an Urban Mass Rapid Transit system. It is the fourth-longest operational metro network in India. This Metro project consists of: 

  1. Two operational lines– Purple & Green with 51 stations & a composite length of 72.17 Kms and 
  2. 6 Under-Construction Lines– with 68 stations & a composite length of 99.296 Kms  

Bangalore metro will also be the 2nd metro system in India to employ the ATO technology on its upcoming Yellow line. It has also introduced innovative services like Group QR and others to increase the attractiveness of Bangalore Metro as the First Choice Transport system for the traffic-decked city of Bengaluru.
