NAGPUR (Metro Rail News): Construction of a new Nagpur Metro bridge is underway at the Uppalwadi Railway RUB Crossing on Reach-2A. Upon completion, the 24-metre-tall structure will become Nagpur’s tallest balanced cantilever construction, with completion targeted for June 2027.

The bridge is a major feature of the 6.92 km long Nagpur metro corridor Reach-2A. It is going to stretch around the distance from the last destination of existing Phase 1 till Lekha Nagar near Asha Hospital on the Kamptee Road. The elevated structure will also cross 3 railway lines below it namely, Godhani-Kalamna, Chhindwara-Nagpur and Khaparkheda.

Maha Metro behind strengthening the structure

The central span of the bridge is of 110 metres, while the side spans are recorded to be of 74 metres and 73 metres respectively, constituting the total length of the bridge as 257 metres. The bridge is laid high from the ground at 80 feet. Maha Metro has undertaken the task of building it, using a specialised 40-tonne machine, under Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2 expansion, as mentioned by the Times of India.

The scaffolding to support the bridge construction work has not been erected to avoid obstructing the railway movement and the hassle of road traffic around it. However, the structure is being built by the engineers virtually in midair.  The method used to strengthen the foundation and to extend the longevity of the structure is the balanced cantilever (CLC) method, which easily allows the builders to expand the horizontal structure above the standing pillars.

As said by a senior MahaMetro authority, for the foundation the concrete segments are casted on either side of each pier, and further joined by post-tensioning technology to maintain structural balance, as reported by The Times of India.

The bridge is going to enhance Nagpur metro connectivity towards Kamptee, which is the longest metro network of Phase 2. Also, it will provide another transit option to travellers along the section of Reach 2-A by providing services over the railways.
