MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Maharashtra government has approved Metro Line 12A, an 18.40-km elevated corridor linking Manpada-Katai Naka with Taloja via Kalyan Phata, with a completion target of three-and-a-half years. The ₹13,856.37 crore project aims to improve connectivity between Kalyan-Dombivli and Navi Mumbai, with integrated flyovers and interchanges planned to ease road congestion.

The cabinet committee on infrastructure, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, cleared the project at a meeting at Mantralaya on Tuesday. Fadnavis directed officials to meet the deadline and to speed up other metro projects underway across Maharashtra

The timeline comes as several Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) projects launched in 2018 continue to face delays. At an earlier meeting, Fadnavis had asked the authority to treat 2027 as the ‘Year of Metro’ and accelerate pending work.

Mumbai Metro Line 12A: Route and Project Scope

The proposed corridor will cover 18.40 km and include 12 elevated stations. It is designed to connect residential areas with industrial and logistics hubs while improving access between Kalyan-Dombivli and Navi Mumbai. Key project components include:

  • Elevated metro corridor: An 18.40-km route from Manpada-Katai Naka to Taloja via Kalyan Phata.
  • Integrated flyovers: A 6.93-km four-lane flyover and an 8.69-km six-lane flyover.
  • Passenger demand: Officials estimate that the corridor could serve around 4.74 lakh passengers daily.
  • Travel-time savings: The project is expected to cut journey times by 40-50% compared with road travel, according to officials.
  • Feeder services: Bus connections are planned at all stations to support last-mile travel.

The metro line and flyovers are intended to provide additional transport capacity along the corridor. Their integration could also help separate some longer-distance movements from local road traffic.

Interchanges to Link Metro and Rail Networks

Metro Line 12A will connect with other planned and operational transport links at key locations. The proposed interchange points are:

  1. Katai Naka: Connection with Metro Line 12 and a bullet train connecting link.
  2. Katai Naka-Kalyan Phata: Interchange with Metro Line 14.
  3. Amandut: Connection with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1.

These links are intended to make transfers between metro services and other transport networks easier. Feeder buses at all stations are also planned to extend the corridor’s reach beyond the immediate station areas.

MMRDA Gets Planning Authority Role

The infrastructure committee also approved the appointment of MMRDA as the Special Planning Authority for the metro corridor and integrated flyovers. It cleared the transfer of government land within the project’s influence area to the authority. The approvals will allow MMRDA to undertake planning and development activities and mobilise funds for the project.
