DELHI (Metro Rail News): Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured two major systems contracts for Bangladesh’s Dhaka Metro Line 1, covering track, electrical infrastructure, signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors. The orders, valued in the ₹5,000-10,000 crore range, strengthen the Indian engineering company’s presence in Bangladesh’s expanding urban rail sector.
L&T’s Transportation Infrastructure business will execute Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems, and CP10 for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors. The packages form a key part of Line 1, which is planned as Bangladesh’s first underground metro project.
Metro Contracts Cover Track, Electrical and Signalling Systems
Under CP09, L&T will work with Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation to design, procure, install, test and commission track and electrical systems across the corridor. The package includes:
- Track works across the metro network.
- Power supply and distribution systems.
- Traction substations.
- Overhead catenary systems.
- Associated electrical infrastructure.
CP10 covers the network’s signalling and telecommunications systems, along with platform screen doors. These systems will support train movement, operational communications and passenger safety at stations. The contracts cover the core systems required to operate Line 1. The company has not announced a project completion schedule or package-wise contract values in the information provided.

Dhaka Metro Line 1: Route and project details
Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dhaka Metro Line 1 is planned to extend approximately 31 km across two routes. The project is intended to improve mass transit connectivity in Dhaka, including links to the airport and the eastern Purbachal area. Key details include:
| Information | Details |
| Planned network length | Approximately 31 km |
| Airport Route | Kamalapur to the airport |
| Purbachal Route | Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal |
| Planned stations | 19 |
| Depot | Pitalganj |
| Funding agency | Japan International Cooperation Agency |
The line is expected to add a major underground rapid-transit route to Dhaka’s public transport network. Its delivery will depend on progress across civil construction and the integration of the track, power, signalling and station systems.
Repeat business in Bangladesh
The latest contracts build on L&T’s earlier involvement in Dhaka Metro Line 6, Bangladesh’s first metro corridor, which is now in commercial operation. L&T delivered the integrated railway systems package for that line. The company is also working on systems for the Jakarta Metro, adding to its international urban rail portfolio.
Ramkumar S, Senior Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the new orders reflect the company’s previous experience on Line 6 and its work coordinating multiple systems suppliers and project stakeholders.
Systems integration will be critical
The two packages bring together several interdependent components. Track and power infrastructure must work in coordination with signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors before the line can enter passenger service.
For Dhaka, Line 1 represents a major addition to the city’s mass transit infrastructure. For L&T, the contracts extend its role from delivering systems on the operational Line 6 to supplying critical infrastructure for the country’s planned first underground metro.
The orders give L&T a substantial role in developing Dhaka Metro Line 1’s operating systems. The next key milestones will be progress on installation, integration and commissioning alongside the project’s civil works.
