DELHI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railways (IR) achieved a 22.5% growth in coal loading in the period of 1st to 18th October, 2026 as compared to the corresponding period last year. The increase comes as the demand for coal fired electricity remains strong, placing greater emphasis on timely fuel supplies to thermal power plants.
According to the data released by the Ministry of Railways on October 22, the network moved an average of 87 more coal rakes per day during the first 18 days of October 2026 than in the corresponding period last year. The record reflects an increase in coal transportation as the power sector seeks to maintain adequate fuel stocks.
Indian Railways reports strong coal loading growth
During the first half of the current financial year 2026-’27, 430 coal rakes were loaded each day. The year 2026 saw a rise in percentage of coal supply as compared to the last year in following ways:
| Time Period | Increase in Percentage (when compared with the corresponding period last year) |
| 1st October- 18th October 2026 | Coal loading rose 22.5% year-on-year |
| (H1FY) 2026-27 | An average of 430 coal rakes dispatched daily to thermal power plants, up to 7.1% |
| September 2026 | Daily coal rakes dispatches increased 14% year-on-year |
Power demand drives focus on coal supply
The rise in coal transportation comes amid increased electricity demand linked to industrial activity and deficient rainfall in some parts of the country. These conditions can increase dependence on coal-based generation, marking reliable fuel movement a priority for power producers. Indian Railways said sustained coal evacuation has helped maintain steady coal stocks at thermal power plants.

Indian Railways coordinates with coal and power ministries
Indian Railways is coordinating with the Ministry of Coal to support coal evacuation and the Ministry of Power to align transportation with thermal power plants’ requirements. The coordination is intended to keep supplies moving and helps plants maintain sufficient stocks. The latest figure, however, covers coal loading and dispatch facilities rather than electricity generation or actual coal consumption.
