Mumbai Metro

Operational Operator: MMRDA / MMRC Length: 101.4 km Since: 08/06/2014 Official site ↗

The Mumbai Metro is a growing rapid transit network built to relieve one of the most crowded commuter systems in the world. It works alongside the city’s suburban railway, adding fast east-west and cross-town links that the old radial lines never provided. Several lines are already carrying passengers and more are under construction, spread across elevated and underground corridors.

The network

The system began with Line 1, the elevated Versova to Ghatkopar corridor that opened in 2014. Since then the map has widened with the Line 2A and Line 7 corridors along the western suburbs, and with Line 3, the underground Aqua Line running from Colaba through Bandra to SEEPZ. Together the lines total more than 100 km in operation and under construction, and they connect at interchanges with the suburban rail and monorail.

Operators and what comes next

Mumbai’s metro is delivered by more than one agency. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and its operating arm handle most of the elevated lines, while the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) built the underground Line 3. Work continues on extensions and new corridors across the metropolitan region, with related networks taking shape in Navi Mumbai and Thane.
