Delhi Metro's TBM Breakthrough at Vasant Kunj Station

DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Phase 4 advanced as J Kumar Infraprojects’ Tunnel Boring Machine S64B (Shalini) achieved a breakthrough at Vasant Kunj Metro Station of the Golden Line on 25 June 2025. This development was recorded under Package DC-08 of the 23.622 km Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor.

TBM S64B, nicknamed Shalini, was commissioned as the first TBM for the 6.116 km Package DC-08. Yesterday, TBM Shalini completed its first assignment after building a 1550-meter-long tunnel between Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj Station. The breakthrough of the parallel tunnel was successfully achieved by TBM Sonakshi on 6 March 2025.

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) S64B, measuring 91 metres in length with a cutterhead diameter of 6.61 metres, was deployed to construct the tunnel at an average depth of approximately 22.86 metres (ranging from 15.48 metres to 30.25 metres). The tunnel comprises 1,105 precast concrete rings, each with an internal diameter of 5.8 metres, forming the structural lining of the tunnel.

J Kumar Infraprojects secured the civil package contract DC-08 from DMRC at Rs. 1611.74 crore. The scope of the package covers a 6.116 km stretch of the Golden Line, connecting Aerocity to Kishangarh. This section includes the construction of four stations, Aerocity, Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, and Kishangarh, spanning from chainage (-)760 metres to 5,356.285 metres.

Delhi Metro Phase 4 will add 112.32 kilometres to the existing network, of which approximately 40.109 kilometres of alignment will be underground. Within this expansion, the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor, spanning 23.622 kilometres, will feature 19.343 kilometres of underground section.
