
Chennai: With the view to revive old traditional games and to help commuters bond well, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has started month-long traditional games event. The celebration are part of celebrating the rich heritage and history of India.
The event is planned by CMRL along with Kreeda – a is an organisation that has been working for over 15 years in researching, developing and reviving traditional games of India.
The program started from July 16 and will continue till August 13. The first leg of the celebrations began at Guindy Metro Station on July 17. Several traditional games namely Pallanguzhi, Parama Patham, Aadu Puli Aatam, Kattam Vilaiyattu, Nakshatra Vilaiyattu, Nallu Katta Dhayam, Dhadi were played by enthusiastic passengers and public.
This event will continue to happen from 18th July 2018 to 13th August 2018 at 20 Metro stations namely Arumbakkam, Ashok Nagar, Thirumangalam, Kilpauk, Airport, St Thomas Mount, Ekkatuthangal , Anna Nagar East, Pachaiyappa’s College, Central, Saidapet, Alandur, Anna Nagar Tower, Ag- DMS, Shenoy Nagar, Nehru Park, CMBT, Teynampet, Egmore, Koyambedu and Meenambakkam Metro Stations from 4 pm to 6 pm and in Vadapalani, Little Mount, Nanganallur Metro stations from 10 am to 12 pm.
Vinita Sidhartha, founder of Kreeda shared that these games offered high level of recreation. In this technological driven era is it imperative to reconnect with these games and share the rich history with present and future generation.
They have identified 50 traditional games as well as those from abroad. Some of them are home-grown non-board games which they want to share with commuters, offering recreation and reconnection with traditional games.
Interestingly, many non-metro travellers are coming to the station to play games and relive their childhood.
Metro officials shared that since the country is known for rich heritage and culture, these games will help in offering a good break from routine. It will also help in bringing the history of the country closer to commuters.
