Close to 150 frontline staff of the Delhi Metro comprising of Station Managers, Station Controllers and Customer Relation Assistants (CRAs) attended the workshop. As these officials interact with the passengers at the stations, the workshop was organized so that they are trained adequately to deal with the visually impaired commuters.

Experts from the ‘Blind Relief Association’, Delhi conducted the workshop at Metro Bhawan. The workshop was focused on providing orientation and mobility to the visually impaired passengers while traveling by the Delhi Metro.

The Delhi Metro already has taken a number of measures to provide comfortable traveling experience to the differently abled commuters. Facilities like ramps, tactile paths, wide AFC Gates, lifts, reserved seats etc are provided to the differently abled passengers at all stations. Attendants with wheel chair facility are also provided to the commuters on prior intimation.

All the staff deputed with the task of interacting with passengers are also trained at Delhi Metro’s training institute before assuming charge. Chennai Metro | 104 km, 104 stations: Unveiling Phase II of Metro

The bulk of the stretch is likely to be underground, leading to an escalation of cost from the original estimate of Rs. 44,000 crore.

Chennai: Even as phase I of Chennai Metro Rail is finally becoming operational in segments, after six years of construction, phase II, stretching over 104.5 km with 104 stations, will soon be submitted to the State government for approval.

Officials of RITES, the organisation that has been preparing the detailed project report for the stretch, said they will submit the document in September.

“There were some delays related to traffic permissions when we conducted the surveys. Also, residents put up opposition in many areas during the survey.

If Chennai Metro Rail and the State government want to make changes, then, there will be minor changes in the alignment,” an official said.

Except for the portion from Kandanchavadi bus stop to SIPCOT, the remaining portions of the three corridors will be underground. “Except for that portion, we don’t have the adequate road width to carry out elevated corridor construction in the rest of the stretch,” an official said.

There will be a huge depot located at Madhavaram Milk Colony for maintenance of stations. “Depending on the requirement, we can add another depot,” he added.

According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), if most of the three corridors in phase II are underground, then the cost may be revised from the existing estimate of about Rs. 44,000 crore. “It may cost about Rs. 150-200 crore per kilometre overground, whereas underground construction may cost as much as Rs. 400-500 crore per kilometre,” an official said. In this phase too, the Japan International Cooperation Agency may be providing part of the funds, he added.

Sources said the fares may be in line with the rates in phase I. For the first service between Koyambedu and Alandur, the fares range between Rs. 10-40 for the 10-km stretch.

Nagpur Metro |Construction of 10 Metro rail stations to start in a week

Nagpur: The city’s metro rail project will gather more speed as Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) awarding the contract to construct 10 railway stations to Infrastructure Leasing and Finance Services (ILFS). The work on the stations will begin within a week, Brijesh Dixit, managing director of NMRCL, said on Wednesday.

Of the 10 stations, seven are elevated and three are at ground level. The stations are: Khapri and New Airport (both ground level), Airport, Ujjwal Nagar, Jaiprakash Nagar, Chhatrapati Nagar, Ajni Square, Rahate Colony and Congress Nagar (all elevated). In addition, a temporary station will be constructed between Khapri and New Airport stations, which will be used for the test run. “If need arises we can continue with this station. In any case we are going to use the space in front of this station for parking of private vehicles, buses and autorickshaws,” the MD said.

Dixit further said that work on the stations will be done at a fast pace as NMRCL had handed over the designs to the contractor at the time of awarding the tender. “We provided them 181 designs. Usually, final designing is done after the contract is awarded. Another unique feature is that some part of the viaduct will be constructed along with the stations,” he added.

Meanwhile, NMRCL has achieved another milestone by launching its first girder (horizontal portion) between New Airport and Khapri Metro Stations in the viaduct over the proposed Concor siding in Mihan. Over 80 girders of similar spans are ready in the casting yard, which will be launched shortly. “With the progressing launching of remaining girders, track linking work will be started. Eighteen horizontal segments, to be used in the Airport to Sitabuldi stretch, are ready and will be launched from mid-August,” Dixit further said.

In another major development, NMRCL has changed the design of Wardha Road flyover for the convenience of motorists. The earlier design was made by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). Earlier, motorists using the flyover and coming from Manish Nagar side would have to go up to the Airport entrance and take a U-turn for going toward Ajni Square. The new decision will allow motorists to travel in both directions without any detour.

Mahesh Kumar, NMRCL director (projects), told TOI, “We will build a 200 metre long tunnel below the railway line. The 20 metre wide tunnel will reach ground level near a park. A loop will connect the road to the flyover. There will be on both sides of the railway line. This design has been approved by the chief minister.”
