Delhi Metro | DMRC’s Violet Line badly hit due to erratic power supply

0

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro services in the capital were badly hit on today as movements of seven trains were affected with four round trip cancellations, two delayed and one partial cancellation on the Violet Line connecting ITO to Escorts Mujesar due to erratic power supply.

Power supply at three substations tripped intermittently in the morning causing hardships to office goers stranded in trains and stations.

It was a “rare situation” when three substations tripped one after another due to problems of power supply causing cancellation of four round trips, two delayed trips and one partial trip cancellation on the Line 6 (Violet Line), said Sharat Sharma, Director (Operations) of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

“Intermittent power supply failure from Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd (HVPNL) and Delhi Transco Ltd (DTL) to DMRC’s substations located at Faridabad, Sarita Vihar and Park Street led to tripping of OHE. These substations distribute power to entire Line-6 for running trains and stations,” he said.

The problem began with power tripping at Sarita Vihar substations at 8.11 am and immediately supply was restored from Faridabad substation which also tripped at 8.28 am. Supply tripped at both the substations thrice each, intermittently, affecting the train movement.

To tackle the situation, power supply was restored from IP Extension substation but it also tripped for five minutes at 8.25 am. Finally, power supply was restored at Faridabad substation at 9.42 am and situation normalised at 9.49 am. For three minutes, between 8.25 am to 8.28 am, there was no power available, said the official.

Metro services in the recent past have been hit due to one or another reason. A power supply snag hit the Yellow Line, delaying train movement along the North-South corridor, yesterday. DMRC has lodged a case against a telecom company in this regard for snapping a power line.

The Blue Line (Line 3) connecting Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre and Vaishali is often affected by snags related to signalling problems.

“Line 3 is more prone to failures due to a different signalling system used by us,” Sharma said.

Office-goers had a hard time as they were stranded in the trains as well as on stations as train services remained affected for around two hours.

“In normal cases of tripping at any substation, the power supply is restored from another one but in this particular case the situation was difficult due to tripping of power supply at three substations intermittently,”  Sharma said.

New Delhi: With the central government allocating Rs 950 crore to the Pune Metro Rail project and nearly one-third of the geo-technical survey being complete, work on the Pune Metro will begin soon. The first stretch of 5 km could be ready as early as 2019, Brijesh Dixit, MD of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro), said. The company could soon start the tendering process for the Pune Metro, he said. Work on the project would start in April 2017 and be completed by 2021.

This indicated confidence in the progress made so far and the sense of urgency the government has to develop new public transport systems in important cities like Pune. The state government is expected to make significant budgetary provision when the state budget is presented during the budget session of the Assembly which starts on March 6.

Maha-Metro is a JV of the government of India and the government of Maharashtra that is executing the R11,420-crore Pune Metro project. Maha-Metro will be funded by the central and state governments with both putting in 40%, while Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations put 10% and the remaining to be raised from external agencies.

Maha Metro is in talks with World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Finance Institution and others for raising R6,500 crore. With a population of 55 lakh the Pune Metro is expected to be viable for ridership of around 3.5 lakh which is not even 10% of the population, Dixit said. Pune Metro has two routes in the first phase with a 16.59-km line and a 14.93-km line running in East-West and North-South directions. Most of it is elevated with 5 km underground.

Ground surveys are being carried out across the city and almost one-third of the geo-technical survey has been completed till date. The Pimpri Chinchwad to Agricultural College has been identified as priority section and tendering for this will be floated in last week of February.

METRO TRAIN SERVICES TO BE CURTAILED ON 26TH JANUARY
METRO TRAIN SERVICES TO BE CURTAILED ON 26TH JANUARY

New Delhi: In continuation of its recent poor run, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation faltered yet again today with a power supply snag hitting the Yellow Line, delaying train movement along the North-South corridor.

Train services were hit from around 12 PM to 12.40 PM due to failure of power supply from Delhi Transco (DTL) to DMRC’s substations located at Kashmere Gate and Jahangirpuri, leading to tripping of Over Head Electrification (OHE) two to three times, a Delhi Metro official said.

Services were affected between Central Secretariat and Samaypur Badli stations of the corridor. However, the cascading effect could be felt along the entire line due to bunching effect, he said.

On the other hand, interlocking issue between Jahangirpuri and Model Town stations hindered the setting of routes and providing target speed to trains, thereby affecting the services further.

“Two trains were short looped from Viswavidyalaya to HUDA City Centre in this period to minimise the impact on rest of the section,” the official said.

The 48-km-long Yellow Line (line 2), one of the busiest, connects north Delhi’s Samaypur Badli to Huda City Centre of Gurgaon passing through the walled city and south Delhi.

A spate of glitches have hit DMRC’s Blue Line in the recent past, prompting the Centre to seek a detailed report on the same.

Mumbai Metro | MMRDA plans to build Metro Bhavan in Aarey Milk Colony

0

Mumbai: After demarcating a portion of Aarey Milk Colony for a Metro car depot, the state government is now planning to build a ‘Metro Bhavan’.

There is already a stand-off between environmentalists and state officials over a part of Aarey Milk Colony being used for the Metro rail car depot. Now, there is a plan to have more Metro-related facilities at Aarey, but on a different land parcel, to ease Mumbaikars’ commuting woes.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) now wants a four-acre plot next to the Western Express Highway in Goregaon to set up an integrated operations and control centre.

“We will require land permanently to set up the centre for all Metro rail routes planned and those under construction in Mumbai. We recently placed a request with the departments concerned,” said Praveen Darade, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. Earlier, another request was forwarded by the MMRDA to the Urban Development Department and Dairy Development Department to obtain another two acres adjoining the plot identified for the control centre. However, there will be a need for setting up labour camps as well as a casting yard for the Metro lines, for a few years or for temporary use.

“These two plots are next to a new fuel station that has come up on the eastern side of the Western Express Highway. The plots do not have tree coverage. There is only wild grass or bushes,” added Darade.

“We received a proposal by Dairy Development Department a few days ago pertaining to the setting up a Metro Bhavan on the plot,” said NV Rathod, Chief Executive Officer of Aarey Milk Colony.

Stalin D, who has challenged the construction of the car depot (for the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line) and Aarey Metro station at Aarey with the National Green Tribunal, responded to the latest development, saying: “I am not surprised with their latest move. We are fighting to protect the city’s green cover.”

Nagpur Metro | Siemens to install signalling, control system in metro

0

Nagpur: The Metro Rail project has moved another step forward with the contract for signalling and train control being awarded to a consortium headed by Siemens. Mahametro (earlier NMRCL) has saved Rs 65 crore in the contract as the consortium has bid lower than the estimate.

Brijesh Dixit, managing director of Mahametro, said that work of signalling and train control of Nagpur Metro Rail was estimated to be 352 crores. “Following international competitive bidding, the tender was awarded to consortium of Siemens India & Siemens Rail Automation and SAU Spain for Rs287 crores, ” he said.

“Nagpur Metro will work on communication based train control (CBTC) system using free band of radio frequency for metro signalling which is the latest technology world wide,” Dixit further said.

According to Dixit, there were several advantages of using CBTC system.

“It reduces maintenance costs as it minimizes number of personnel and equipment required to maintain system due to minimal track and wayside equipment. The recovery is faster in case of operational disturbances.
“The life cycle cost is also low. It has control and diagnostic capability as it maximizes train management capability and provides high level of system status and diagnostic information.
“Due to dynamic computing running speeds, speed change can be more smooth and gentle with minimum operational time,” he said.
