Indore Metro Launches First TBM ‘Narmada’ for Underground Construction

INDORE (Metro Rail News): Indore Metro has entered a new stage of construction with the launch of its first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), ‘Narmada’. The 410-tonne machine will build the underground tunnel between Airport and Bada Ganpati, marking the start of mechanised tunnelling work on the project.

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) launched the TBM from a construction shaft near Indore Airport on Thursday. The deployment marks an important step for the underground section of the Indore Metro project. Until now, the focus remained on preparing the construction infrastructure required for tunnelling.

410-tonne TBM lowered into Airport shaft

TBM ‘Narmada’ weighs around 410 metric tonnes. Engineers first assembled the massive machine at ground level before lowering it into the launch shaft near the airport. The operation required specialised lifting equipment due to the size and weight of the TBM. MPMRCL used a combination of a Megalift System and Strand Jack Assembly to lift, move and lower the machine into position. The lifting arrangement can handle loads of more than 1,000 metric tonnes and helped engineers position the TBM with controlled precision. MPMRCL Managing Director S. Krishna Chaitanya inspected the launching operation and reviewed the technical process with the project team.

TBM to construct Airport-Bada Ganpati tunnel

The machine will now undertake tunnelling work on the underground section between Airport and Bada Ganpati. TBMs allow engineers to excavate tunnels below densely developed areas with limited disruption at the surface. The method also reduces the need for large-scale open excavation. Officials carried out the launch under detailed engineering procedures and safety protocols due to the complexity of handling the heavy equipment.

With the first TBM now positioned at the launch shaft, Indore Metro’s underground construction can move towards active tunnelling. The progress of the tunnel drive will be closely watched as the project enters one of its most technically demanding stages.

Delhi Metro: DMRC Awards ₹138.70 Cr Sanoth Depot Contract on Rithala-Kundli Corridor

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion has taken another step forward. Lisha Engineers Private Limited has won a ₹138.70 crore contract for civil and infrastructure work at Sanoth Depot. The depot will support the upcoming Rithala-Kundli corridor. 

The contract covers the construction of depot buildings, workshops, inspection facilities and other supporting infrastructure required for the operation and maintenance of the new metro line.

About Delhi Metro’s Rithala-Kundli Corridor 

The Rithala-Kundli corridor will stretch 26.463 km as part of Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion. It will extend the Red Line from Rithala to Nathupur (Kundli) in Haryana. The ₹6,230 crore project will have 21 elevated stations. The corridor will improve metro connectivity in northwestern Delhi. It will serve areas such as Rohini, Bawana and Narela and provide a direct metro link towards Haryana.

New East-West Rail Corridor to Bring Connectivity to Maharashtra’s Unconnected Regions: Ashwini Vaishnaw

MAHARASHTRA (Metro Rail News): The proposed Surat-Dankuni East-West Rail Corridor could bring railway connectivity to parts of Maharashtra that have remained outside the network so far. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new corridor will support both passenger and freight movement while strengthening industrial and rural connectivity.

Speaking through video conferencing from New Delhi during the flagging-off ceremony of the CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express, Vaishnaw said Indian Railways is planning the new east-west corridor to improve connectivity across previously underserved regions. The proposed corridor was announced in the Union Budget and is expected to connect parts of Maharashtra, including western Maharashtra and the Nashik region.

Corridor planned for freight and passenger movement

Vaishnaw said the Surat-Dankuni corridor will carry both freight and passenger traffic. According to the minister, the alignment is being planned to bring rail connectivity to regions that currently have limited or no direct access to the railway network. He said the idea gained momentum after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis suggested integrating the eastern and western freight corridors with emerging industrial development zones during a recent event in Pune. The new corridor could also support economic activity in rural areas by improving access to larger markets and industrial centres.

Vaishnaw said the completion of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors will further improve freight movement to and from Maharashtra. Faster cargo movement from Jawaharlal Nehru Port towards northern, eastern and central India could strengthen logistics operations and support industrial growth across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and neighbouring areas. The proposed east-west corridor would add another strategic rail link to this wider freight network.

Mumbai suburban network set for capacity upgrades

Vaishnaw also shared updates on Mumbai’s suburban railway network. Around 3,200 local train services currently operate across Mumbai. The Railways is working on increasing network capacity, upgrading signalling infrastructure and introducing new-generation suburban trains. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has received directions to manufacture 28 air-conditioned suburban trains, with production of the first train expected to begin in 2027. The minister said Indian Railways aims to have 238 new-generation local trains by 2030. These trains will feature automatic doors and other modern passenger facilities. Railway projects worth around ₹18,000 crore are currently underway in Mumbai, according to the minister.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train work progresses

Vaishnaw also highlighted progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project. Two tunnel boring machines are currently working simultaneously on the undersea tunnel section between Bandra-Kurla Complex and Thane. The first section of the Bullet Train project is expected to begin operations in 2027.

Additional trains planned for Ganesh festival

Indian Railways plans to operate around 350 special trains during the upcoming Ganesh festival to manage additional passenger demand, particularly on routes connecting Mumbai with the Konkan region.

Delhi Metro Set for AI-Powered CCTV Camera Upgrade: DMRC Floats ₹109 Cr Tender

DELHI(Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro network is set to be equipped with an AI-powered CCTV surveillance system. In this regard, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for the upgradation of its existing analogue CCTV surveillance system to an IP-based CCTV system across its infrastructure. The proposed transition is intended to augment surveillance and security at station premises and facilitate more effective monitoring to prevent untoward incidents, including theft.

Scope of Work: Upgradation of analog CCTV system to IP-based CCTV system of DMRC 

The upgraded surveillance system will incorporate artificial intelligence capabilities, enabling it to identify instances of overcrowding and loitering. However, the tender document does not specify the locations where these systems are proposed to be installed. A recent report by ET Infra, however, states that DMRC has identified 76 locations for the proposed upgrade across the Red Line, Blue Line and Line 4, which connects Vaishali with Yamuna Bank. The new surveillance systems will be integrated into the existing CCTV network for live viewing and recording. 

Rail How AI Driven Innovations A

The new cameras will be connected to DMRC’s existing central CCTV network. It will identify instances of crowding, prolonged queuing, loitering and attempts to interfere with surveillance cameras, while simultaneously analysing established patterns of routine activity to detect and flag anomalous movements or behavioural deviations.

Delhi Metro’s New Surveillance Sysem to Track Movement of Suspects

The cameras will also detect if someone enters the track area with 90% accuracy and raise an alarm to inform concerned officials. What makes this system stand out is its capability to identify a person and track their movements across different cameras of the infrastructure. Currently, the DMRC’s existing network is equipped with 2,531 analogue cameras, and the upgrade will replace them.

Thiruvananthapuram Metro DPR Proposes Multimodal Hubs at Pappanamcode and Anayara

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (Metro Rail News): The proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro could become part of a wider transport network for the city. Its DPR recommends major multimodal transport hubs at Pappanamcode and Anayara. These hubs could connect Metro services with road, rail, air and possibly water transport, making passenger transfers easier.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) submitted the DPR to the Kerala government with technical support from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The first phase will cover 31 km from Pappanamcode to Enchakkal, with 27 stations. The project could cost around ₹8,000 crore.

Pappanamcode planned as southern mobility hub

The DPR identifies Pappanamcode as an important transport hub, which is located at the southern end of the proposed Metro corridor. The plan includes large parking facilities to support a park-and-ride system. Commuters travelling from Neyyattinkara, Balaramapuram and Parassala could park their vehicles at the hub and continue their journey towards the city by Metro. The proposal aims to reduce the number of private vehicles travelling into central Thiruvananthapuram.

Anayara could connect five modes of transport

The larger multimodal hub has been proposed at Anayara. Its location gives it access to several existing and planned transport networks. The area lies close to NH 66, Kochuveli railway station, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and the Parvathy Puthanar waterway. The DPR envisions Anayara as a potential meeting point for:

  • Metro rail
  • Road transport
  • Indian Railways
  • Air travel
  • Future water transport

The proposal also keeps space for the possible development of water-based public transport services in the future.

31 km elevated corridor across key city locations

The first phase will connect Pappanamcode with Enchakkal through several important residential, commercial and employment areas. The proposed alignment will cover:

Pappanamcode – Karamana – Thampanoor – Secretariat – Palayam – Medical College – Ulloor – Sreekaryam – Kazhakkoottam – Technopark – Akkulam – Kochuveli – Airport – Enchakkal.

The current proposal plans the entire Metro corridor as an elevated system.

Kazhakkoottam to house Metro maintenance facility

The DPR has proposed a 20 acre Metro yard and maintenance facility at Kazhakkoottam. Its location near Technopark could support the operational requirements of the corridor and provide space for train maintenance and other Metro facilities. The proposed stations will include lifts and escalators, along with improved parking facilities to make access easier for passengers.

Rajasthan Mulls Funding Plan for ₹7,747 cr Bawal-Behror RRTS stretch

JAIPUR (Metro Rail News): The Balwal-Behror section of Delhi-Gurugram-Rewari-Alwar RRTS project, has taken centre stage after a meeting held at the State Secretariat in Jaipur. The meeting, led by Chief Secretary Mr V. Srinivas, examined the supplementary DPR concerning the Balwal-Behror RRTS section before granting the state’s approval for further pursuit of the project. 

During the meeting, a close focus was placed on the crucial elements of the project, including the financing structure, inter-state cost sharing between Haryana and Rajasthan, and land cost. Rajasthan government is closely scrutinising the project’s alignment with the state’s long term economic and urban growth. 

The Alignment of RRTS Project in Rajasthan 

Originally, the corridor will span about 129 km between Sarai Kale Khan and Behror, of which 25 km will fall in Rajasthan, covering its industrial belt. As of now, 4 stations are planned at SNB Border (Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behror), Shahjahanpur, Neemrana, and Behror. 

The Balwal- Behror RRTS project is projected to come up  at ₹7,747 crore. The cost incorporates land acquisition cost and other elements. Given the magnitude of the proposed project, timely determination of the financial obligations of the concerned authorities will be essential for its further progress. The proposed financing structure is expected to involve financial assistance from the Central Government, the State Government’s share, expenditure towards land acquisition and other land-related requirements, and institutional sources of finance. 

In this context, the authorities also considered avenues for mobilisation of additional resources. The District Collector, Kotputli-Behror, and the Chief Executive Officer, Behror Industrial Development Authority, were directed to identify and undertake appropriate measures for mobilisation of resources towards meeting the financial requirements of the project, as reported by ET Rajasthan.

Inter-State Financing Plan

A further matter considered during the review concerned the proposed allocation of the Bawal-Rajasthan border section between the Governments of Rajasthan and Haryana. If approved, the proposed arrangement would provide for the respective States to share the financial and other obligations associated with the section, having regard to the inter-State character of the proposed corridor. 

The Chief Secretary has directed all the concerned departments to complete all the necessary obligations and move the DPR for approval. For the implementation of the project, the State’s in-principle approval to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is required. The project’s further movement will be closely dependent on technical, financial, and regulatory clearances. 

Goa Water Metro DPR Under Preparation as Feasibility Study Is Completed

GOA (Metro Rail News): Goa has moved a step closer to developing a Water Metro and inland water transport network, with the feasibility study now complete and the Detailed Project Report under preparation. The proposed system could cover nine routes across around 111 km of waterways.

The Goa government said on Wednesday that Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is preparing the DPR for the proposed project. The state has already received the feasibility study completed by KMRL. River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai shared the update while replying to an unstarred question by MLA Yuri Alemao in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

DPR to determine project cost and implementation plan

The government has not yet received the final DPR. As a result, authorities have not finalized the estimated project cost, funding pattern or implementation schedule. Dessai said the DPR will provide a realistic cost estimate for the proposed Water Metro network. It will also help determine the share of funding from the Centre and the Goa government. The DPR will further decide whether the project should begin with a pilot corridor or move ahead through phased implementation.

The DPR will also include a detailed traffic and transport assessment. The study will examine whether water-based public transport can help reduce pressure on Goa’s roads and lower dependence on private vehicles. It will assess the likely impact on:

Stakeholder consultations to be part of planning

The state government said the DPR process will also consider consultations with communities and stakeholders connected to Goa’s waterways. These may include local bodies, riverine communities, fishermen and tourism industry representatives. Their inputs could influence route planning, station locations and the wider implementation strategy.

Bengaluru Metro Pink Line Nears Opening as Development Minister Takes Trial Ride

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): After months of delays, Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line has moved closer to passenger operations. Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda took a trial ride on the 7.5-km Kalena Agrahara-Tavarekere stretch, which is now ready for inauguration.

Krishna Byre Gowda reviewed the upcoming corridor along with Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, Bengaluru South MLA M. Krishnappa and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Managing Director P.C. Jaffer. The minister also inspected Majestic Metro station before boarding the Pink Line train for the trial ride.

Bengaluru Metro’s first Pink Line stretch ready for inauguration

The upcoming section runs from Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road to Tavarekere and forms part of Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line under the Namma Metro Phase II project. According to the minister, BMRCL has completed all preparations required to begin passenger services on the stretch. The state government is now waiting for the Government of India to finalise an inauguration date. Officials expect clarity within September, which could allow the corridor to open for commuters soon after.

A key step towards Pink Line commissioning

The trial ride comes after months of construction, testing and preparations, following a missed August 15 deadline and a long wait for commuters. The first operational section will add another Metro connection along the busy Bannerghatta Road corridor. The remaining sections of the Pink Line will open in phases as construction and system works progress.

Indian Railways Plans Four-Lanes Across 7 High-Density Corridors

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railways is moving towards implementing four lanes around its existing 11,000 km network, which incorporates 7 high-density vital corridors to create greater capacity for passenger and freight train movements.

  • Chennai-Mumbai
  • Mumbai-Delhi
  • Delhi-Chennai
  • Mumbai-Howrah
  • Delhi-Guwahati

The strategic plan is very important for routes that handle heavy traffic between major cities and regions. These routes account for almost 41% of total train traffic and covers 16% of the rail network.

Moreover, the seven corridors are also critical for freight movement between India’s major economic centres. More tracks can allow freight trains to operate without competing as heavily with passenger services for limited track capacity. There is an economic advantage in moving more goods by rail. 

Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw has said ‘‘Rail freight costs about ₹1.6 per tonne-km compared with ₹3.6 per tonne-km by road’’, according to ETInfra’s report.

The expansion is not limited to laning ,Indian Railways is also strengthening signalling and train protection systems across the high-density network. As of July 13, 2026, Kavach 4.0 had been commissioned across 2,490 route km on the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah corridors. 

The combination of additional tracks, modern signalling and automatic train protection through Kavach is aimed at improving both network capacity and operational safety. This is particularly important as Railways plans to accommodate more passenger and freight trains on these already heavily utilised corridors.
