CMRL to Commission 15km Section of Chennai Metro Phase 2 in February

1
Chennai Metro

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited(CMRL) has revised its rollout strategy for Phase II operations. Instead of beginning services on a shorter section and extending them later, the CMRL now plans to open the 15.8-km corridor between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani directly in February.

This change signals a departure from the earlier approach, which envisaged starting operations on the Poonamallee Bypass-Porur Junction stretch by the end of January, followed by an extension to Vadapalani a month later.

Preparatory work for the launch of Phase II services is moving into a critical stage. The first round of inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), which focused on the rolling stock, has already been completed. The final CMRS inspection, which will assess station facilities and overall readiness for passenger operations, is expected to take place in the last week of January.

On the infrastructure front, a key task still remains: laying nearly 2 km of track between Porur Junction and Vadapalani, split equally between the up and down lines. CMRL aims to complete at least the down line by January 9 so that trial runs can begin.

To address the challenge, CMRL has stepped up execution on the ground by mobilising around 600 workers to expedite track-laying activities. The coming days will therefore be decisive in determining whether trial operations can start as planned and whether the project remains on track for its targeted service launch.

HMRTC Proposal: RRTS and Metro Likely to Share Common Infrastructure in Gurugram

0
RRTS & Metro

GURUGRAM (Metro Rail News): The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has approached the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) with a proposal to plan the Namo Bharat RRTS corridor along the Gurugram-Faridabad route in a manner that permits metro rail operations on the same infrastructure within Gurugram.

The intent is to enable shared use of the corridor over the initial 8 to 9 kilometres from IFFCO Chowk to Sector 53, where the proposed RRTS alignment overlaps with HMRTC’s planned metro corridor. This approach reflects an effort to optimise infrastructure utilisation, avoid duplication of assets, and improve integration between regional and urban transit systems in a key urban stretch of Gurugram.

Dr Chandar Shekhar Khare, Managing Director of HMRTC, has urged the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) to adopt an operational model similar to that implemented in Meerut, where both Namo Bharat trains and metro services operate on shared infrastructure as reported by Hindustan Times.

From a network integration perspective, NCRTC’s planning for the Gurugram-Faridabad Namo Bharat corridor places particular emphasis on interchange connectivity. The proposed RRTS alignment features interchange with Gurugram’s existing Rapid Metro along Golf Course Road, while also providing a linkage with the proposed metro corridor planned between Golf Course Extension Road and Sector 5.

The proposal will ultimately hinge on approval from the Union government, following a detailed assessment of its technical feasibility and operational necessity on the Gurugram-Faridabad corridor. Such an evaluation will be critical in determining whether shared infrastructure can be implemented without compromising service reliability, capacity, or safety requirements for either system.
