KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): Kolkata Metro is preparing for a significant expansion. The network is expected to reach around 130 km in the coming years. Metro Railway General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta noted the increase in passenger numbers and earnings as the system grows.

Gupta shared the expansion plans during his Independence Day speech at Metro Rail Bhavan. He also reviewed the Kolkata Metro’s recent operational and financial performance.

Kolkata Metro network expansion planned

The Kolkata Metro currently operates across various corridors. Several new sections are under construction or in development. Gupta mentioned that the network should expand to about 130 km soon. This expansion will extend Metro services throughout Kolkata and neighboring areas.

Several projects are already underway. The Joka to Esplanade corridor, part of the Purple Line, and the Orange Line linking New Garia to the airport are among them. The expansion will provide more options for travel on the road and suburban rail, especially as demand in the city increases.

Kolkata Metro carried 23.60 cr passengers in 2025-26

Passenger numbers remain strong. According to Gupta, Kolkata Metro transported 23.60 crore passengers during the 2025-26 period. This statistic shows the rising dependence on Metro services for daily commutes in the city.

The network is also experiencing increased revenue. Metro Railway earned ₹166 crore between April and July 2026. Gupta stated this amount is 34% higher than the revenue from the same period the previous year.

Digital ticketing gains ground

The Kolkata Metro is also seeing a rise in the use of digital payment and ticketing options. Passengers can use digital platforms to:

  • Purchase tokens and smart cards
  • Buy QR-based tickets
  • Recharge smart cards
  • Access Metro ticketing services through the Aamar Kolkata Metro app

The app is available on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. This shift toward digital ticketing is expected to lessen reliance on physical counters and make ticket purchases easier during busy times.

Along with the network expansion, Gupta mentioned that Metro Railway is working to improve operational safety, passenger amenities, and service reliability. This focus will be important as the network grows and serves more passengers.
