Surat Metro

Under Construction Operator: GMRC Length: 40.35 km Updated: Official site ↗

Surat Metro, delivered by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), is under construction to serve India’s diamond and textile hub. Its Phase 1 plan comprises two corridors of roughly 40 km combined, mixing elevated and underground sections, with a depot and operations control centre planned at the Dream City development.

The project extends GMRC’s remit beyond Ahmedabad, making Gujarat one of the few states running multiple full metro builds simultaneously.

Why it matters

Surat is a bet that a fast-growing industrial city without an existing mass-transit culture can build ridership from scratch. Its integration with the planned Dream City diamond-trading development is an example of using a metro to anchor a new economic district, a recurring theme in India’s current wave of metro planning.
