DELHI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railways has approved a Rs 270 crore project to install Kavach on 631 route kilometres of East Coast Railway. This project will enhance train safety on several key routes in Odisha and surrounding areas through Indigenous train protection system.

The approved project will cover six major railway sections of East Coast Railway:
- Baghuapal-Budhapank
- Haridaspur-Paradeep
- Khurda Road-Balangir
- Naupada-Gunupur
- Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh
- Bobbili-Salur
These routes serve both passenger and freight trains and are important for rail connectivity across Odisha and nearby regions.
Kavach’s role in improving safety
Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection system developed by Indian Railways to make train operations safer. The system helps- prevent train collisions, provide automatic train protection, improve safety during train operations and support safer movement of passenger and freight trains. The Railway Ministry stated that installing Kavach on these routes will enhance safety by adding automatic train protection and collision avoidance features.
Part of a larger safety program
Indian Railways is extending Kavach across busy and strategically important routes as part of its nationwide railway safety program. The East Coast Railway project will support this initiative and raise safety standards on key rail corridors in the region.
