State-owned Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has recently secured a contract valued at Rs 1,888 crore from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) located in Chennai. This contract entails the supply of LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) passenger coaches.
The order includes a combination of day and sleeper variants and is part of Indian Railways’ strategic initiative aimed at replacing outdated loco-hauled coaches with modern, safer, and more efficient LHB coaches. The project is expected to be completed within a timeframe of 15 months, as stated by BEML.
LHB coaches represent the next generation of passenger rolling stock, characterised by lightweight stainless-steel bodies, anti-telescopic construction, and advanced suspension systems that ensure enhanced safety, superior comfort, and operational efficiency.
These coaches are fully compatible with End-On Generation (EOG) technology, which enables smoother rides, reduced maintenance costs, and extended service life, thereby supporting Indian Railways’ commitment to modernising travel while prioritising safety and passenger experience.
Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML Ltd., said, “This order underscores BEML’s strong partnership with Indian Railways and our commitment to delivering globally benchmarked passenger rolling stock. Our LHB coaches integrate cutting-edge safety, comfort, and efficiency features, making them a critical component in India’s rail modernisation journey.”
Recently, BEML also secured its first international contract from Malaysia, valued at USD 1 million. This project involves the retrofit and reconditioning of the Mass Rapid Transport System, as disclosed in a recent filing with the stock exchange. To know more about this news, Click Here.
