Lucknow Metro|UP CM says, Lucknow to get metro rail before 2017 polls

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday announced that the Lucknow Metro will begin running before the 2017 state assembly elections.

Addressing reporters after the launch of the uniform for the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) staffers, the chief minister said that political opponents who were accusing his government of selling a pipe dream have now been silenced after seeing the fast pace of work.

Attributing the speed of the work on the metro rail project to the team spirit of officials and agencies involved, the chief minister said that he was very hopeful that the Lucknow Metro would begin plying in much lesser time than the Jaipur Metro.

“Beginning of the metro rail would decongest the city traffic and bring relief to commuters who are for now faced with long jams,” Yadav further said.

“The parliamentary constituency of the union home minister will soon have Metro Rail and I am pretty confident that the parliamentary constituency of the prime minister of India will also soon have it,” he said in an apparent dig at the BJP, which has been speaking of development as its main plank.

In future, he announced, the state government proposed to run metro rail in Kanpur, Agra, Varanasi and Meerut.

London Metro|Subway Strike Hobbles London, Underground and above

London: A strike on the London Underground crippled much of the city’s transportation network on Wednesday, disrupting the plans of millions of travelers and forcing commuters to cram into overcrowded buses and trains or walk or cycle to work.

The 48-hour strike, which began Tuesday evening, was called by two unions to protest plans to cut about 950 jobs and close all ticket offices as part of a restructuring that the London transportation authority says could save around 50 million pounds, or about $81 million, a year.

The strike shut down several parts of the system, which normally has three and a half million subway rides each day. The lines that remained open were operating on a reduced schedule.

Despite promises of extra bus service, long, snaking lines built up on Wednesday at stops. Many people faced long walks to work unless they could pounce on one of the city’s shared bicycles.

There was frustration, too, for drivers. “Traffic congestion was far more intense and went on much longer than normal,” said Chris Lambert, a traffic analyst at Inrix, a company that monitors traffic flows. An 11-mile traffic jam on one of the main arteries into the west of the city did not clear until around noon, Mr. Lambert said.

At the Old Bailey, London’s criminal court, a judge commended jurors who appeared despite the disruption, thanking them for showing the “Dunkirk spirit,” a reference to the evacuation of British and some Allied forces from France in 1940 during World War II.

Manuel Cortes, leader of the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association, one of the unions that called the strike, said there had been overwhelming support for it from his members.

“All we have is a fringe service in the outer suburbs with virtually the whole of central London dependent on a skeleton service,” Mr. Cortes said in a statement. “Over 70 percent of the normal service is at a standstill.”

Transport for London, the city’s transportation authority, described the strike as “completely unnecessary” and said it was running at 35 percent of normal Underground service, with eight of 11 lines and 70 percent of stations operating.

In Parliament, Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the disruption. “There is absolutely no justification for a strike,” he said. “We need a modernized Tube line working for the millions of Londoners who use it every day.”

But politically, Mr. Cameron may gain from the strike if angry travelers blame the trade unions, which have close links to the opposition Labour Party. According to British news reports, Mr. Cameron is considering changes to the law to make it harder to call strikes in some sectors, possibly including transportation.

The government may also welcome the news media focus on the leader of one of the striking unions, Bob Crow, the general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, who has a reputation as one of the country’s more outspoken union bosses. He is facing criticism after a newspaper published photographs of him over the weekend on vacation in Brazil as negotiations to avert the strike were continuing.

On Wednesday, Mr. Crow, now back in Britain, staged a verbal confrontation with Mayor Boris Johnson of London, an outspoken critic of the strike, by calling in to a radio show on which Mr. Johnson routinely appears.

Nagpur Metro|Foreign Investment Bankers line up for funding Nagpur Metro Rail project

Nagpur: The Nagpur Metro Rail project is apparently not going to face any problems in getting finance from abroad. After French Development Bank AFD and German agency KfW, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has also show interest in financing the project.

A delegation of EIB is on a two-day visit to Nagpur to study the project. The team will submit its appraisal report on financing the project to its head office.

“The EIB delegation on Wednesday visited the North-South corridor alignment from Khapri to Automotive Square. This was followed by detailed discussion with Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL), and other officers. Several issues concerning the project were discussed in the meeting,” an NMRCL official told the media.

“The EIB team will visit the East-West corridor alignment from Prajapati Nagar to Lokmanya Nagar on Thursday. The delegation will also hold meetings with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) officials and other stakeholders,” he said.  EIB is the bank of European Union.

Hyderabad: L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited has signed MoUs with Indus Tower Limited and Reliance Jio Infocom Limited for using signal towers provided on the roof of the entry and exit structures of all the 64 stations along the three metro corridors.

These two companies will in turn provide access to the mobile service providers to enable their respective customers to have strong cell phone signals while commuting in metros.

Metro officials did not disclose financial details of the deal, which will be in force for nine years.

“This will provide high-quality mobile services and real-time information to all our commuters with an easy access to multiple mobile operators,” a release stated.

Delhi Metro|DMRC plans to set up token counters outside the metro stations

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is planning to set up token counters outside the station in a bid to decongest the inter-change stop.

The New Delhi station not only has a huge rush of passengers using the railway station, but also serves as an inter-change for those who want to board the Airport Express Metro Line.

As a result, the station witnesses a footfall of over one lakh, many of whom do not even board the metro but use the station as a resting point in-between trains. The ridership at the station is around 55,000.

As a crowd control measure, the DMRC has come up with a proposal to install up to 30 additional ticket counters outside the station premises. “The exact location of the counters will depend upon the space provided by railway authorities. We are in touch with them to get some space at ground level allocated to the DMRC,” said a metro official.

Kochi Metro|Metro rail project construction works pick up speed

Kochi: The work of the Kochi Metro Rail project, which was slightly affected by the monsoon rains, regained momentum. According to the authorities concerned, the civil works of the project between Aluva and Maharajah’s College will be completed by the end of this year. As per the data provided by the authorities, a total of 240 girders (including ‘U’ and ‘I’ girders) were installed at the reach between Aluva and Kalamassery. Another 340 girders were already installed between Kalamassery and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. While between the stadium and Maharajah’s College, the contractors have already installed 130 ‘U’ and ‘I’ girders.

There will be a total of 16 stations in the first stretch of Kochi Metro Rail, between Aluva and Maharajah’s College, that will be commissioned initially. These are Aluva, Pulinchode, Companyppady, Ambattukadavu, Muttom, Kalamassery, CUSAT, Pathadippalam, Edappally, Changampuzha Park, Palaraivattam, Jawaharlala Nehru Stadium, Kaloor, Lissie Jn, M G Road and Maharajah’s College.

According to the officials concerned, nearly 50 percent of the work of the stations are completed. The remaining is expected to be completed by December this year. “The areas in the reaches where the civil works are already completed can be handed over for the laying of rails. For instance, in most of the areas between Aluva and Kalamassery, the civil works have been completed in stretches varying to a length of nearly two kilometres. These stretches will be soon handed over for the laying of rails which have been already brought to the nearest casting yards,” according to the officials concerned.

Meanwhile, the work of the coach maintenance yard at Muttom is also progressing in full swing and the official said that the concreting works of the sub station building and the cabling shed for coaches is fast progressing.

Though the actual deadline was scheduled for June 2016, the UDF lead Government wants an early commissioning of the project, before the launch of the election code of conduct for the upcoming Assembly elections. However, if the DMRC becomes successful in completing the work of the 18 km stretch between Aluva and Maharajah’s College before the deadline, it will be yet another national record with respect to Metro Rail construction. It took almost six years to complete the first 10Km stretch of Chennai Metro Rail, which was commissioned recently, while in the case of Delhi Metro Rail, it took more than four years for the completion of first 8.5-km stretch.

Meanwhile, in Bangalore, the first 6km was commissioned after nearly six years from the commencement of work. Taking into consideration all these projects, the work of Kochi Metro Rail is progressing in a fast track mode, the official added.

Gaining Momentum

  • A total of 240 girders were installed at the reach between Aluva and Kalamassery
  • Another 340 girders were already installed between Kalamassery and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
  • Between the stadium and Maharajah’s College, 130 ‘U’ and ‘I’ girders have been installed
  • There will be a total of 16 stations in the first stretch of Kochi Metro Rail, between Aluva and Maharajah’s College

Mumbai Monorail|MMRDA launches three crucial spans over Harbour Line

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been working on a war-footing as far as Phase-II of the Monorail corridor from Wadala to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk corridor is concerned. The Authority yesterday launched three crucial spans over the Harbour Line from MbPT Yard and Wadala. It was a
job well done after 4 hours and 32 minutes’ grueling task. All the three spans of 34.74m, 41.74m and 40.24m in length are 9.6 meters wide and the cumulative weight of the three spans is about 700 tones.
“This was indeed an arduous task considering the length and weight of the spans. However, the same was carried out with some finesse”, said Mr. Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR), MMRDA. “With most permissions and clearances in hand, we can expect completion of the project sooner than later”, concluded Mr. Kawathkar.
The Phase-I of the Monorail corridor from Chembur to Wadala was launched last February.
