Delhi Metro | DMRC starts trial runs between the Janakpuri West and Terminal 1 – IGI Airport

0

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today started trial runs between the Janakpuri West and Terminal 1 – IGI Airport Metro stations on the upcoming Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden Magenta corridor of Phase 3.

With the beginning of trial runs on this 10 kilometre section today, trials are now in progress on both the ends of the Magenta corridor which connects west Delhi with NOIDA along the Outer Ring Road. Trials between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir (13 kilometres) on the other end of this corridor had started on 27th October earlier this year.

Track laying is nearing completion in the remaining underground section between Terminal 1 – IGI Airport and Kalkaji Mandir and trials will be started on this section also in the coming months. With the depot being located at Kalindi Kunj and track laying work still in progress in some sections between Kalkaji Mandir and Terminal 1 – IGI Airport, this particular stretch between Janakpuri West and Terminal 1 – IGI Airport did not have direct depot connectivity for movement of trains.

Therefore, to expedite the process of commencing trials on this section, an entire six coach train was lowered on the tracks near the Sadar Bazar Cantonment station using cranes and trailers recently.

The train was unloaded on the ramp near Sadar Bazar Cantonment through a carefully planned operation, in which the coaches were lowered near the ramp (the location where the alignment goes underground from elevated) and positioned on the tracks with the help of special high capacity cranes and trailers. The process needed absolute precision to avoid any physical damage to the trains or the civil structure.

Delhi Metro’s new UTO (Unattended Train Operations) enabled trains will operate on this corridor. The new trains, with extremely high levels of automation, will now undergo rigorous trials between these stations to ensure that they are ready for smooth operations after the commissioning of the corridor. Initially, train operators will run the trains, but gradually, driverless operations (on the UTO mode) will be possible.

During these trials, the interface of the Metro train will be checked to ensure that there is no physical infringement with civil infrastructure during the movement of the train on the track and also testing of various subsystems of coaches shall be done.

Later on, in stages, the new signaling technology to be implemented on this corridor, the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) will also undergo rigorous testing. The response of the train at different speeds, braking of the train and the interconnection with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) will also be monitored during the trials. The behavior of the track system and the Over Head Electrification (OHE) will be checked repeatedly.

This particular section from Janakpuri West till Terminal 1 – IGI Airport consists of six stations out of which five are underground and one is elevated. The stations are  –  Janakpuri West (interchange with Blue Line), Dabri Mor, Dashrathpuri, Palam, Sadar Bazar Cantonment (only elevated station of the stretch) and Terminal 1 – IGI Airport. With the commencement of trials on this section, now about 23 kilometres out of the 36 kilometre length of this corridor are already undergoing trial runs.

Jammu & Srinagar Metro | Centre’s no to metro rail project for Jammu, Srinagar

0

Jammu: The Union Urban Development and Railways Ministry haven’t found merit, as of now, for starting metro rail network in Jammu and Srinagar, the twin rotational capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir but agreed to take up the proposal again when the cities already in line for the project are cleared.

The Union Urban Development Ministry headed by M Venkaiah Naidu had recently relaxed norms for approval of metro rail networks from 20 lakh population in the City to 10 lakh and decided to grant Central assistance to the States for new mode of urban transport in the cities to overcome traffic congestions.

Official sources told the Excelsior that the Centre has now asked Jammu and Kashmir to put up its fresh proposal after sometime as already there were many cities in the pipeline, which have more urgent needs for metro rail networks in view of more population, space etc.

Accordingly, sources said, the Government would now focus on sanction of Jammu and Srinagar as smart cities first before putting up fresh proposal for metro rail network in the two capital cities of the State to cater to their needs for urban transport.

Presently, five metros and a Tier-II city have metro rail networks in the country. They are Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore (all metro cities) and Jaipur, a Tier-II City. Kolkata was the first city to have metro rail while Chennai is the latest.

The Centre has told the State that a number of cities were ahead of Jammu and Srinagar on merits and criteria adopted for giving Central funding to metro rail projects, which included Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Indore, Nagpur Kochi, Coimbatore, Kozhikode, Bhopal, Chandigarh and Ludhiana etc.

“Once these cities are cleared, the case of Jammu and Srinagar cities for the metro rail projects would be taken up,” sources said, adding that present focus of the State Government as well as Union Urban Development Ministry was focused on development of smart cities.

Jammu and Kashmir has projected two smart cities-Jammu and Srinagar. However, in total 100 smart cities, there was only one slot for Jammu and Kashmir but in view of regional emotions, the State has projected case of both Jammu and Srinagar as the smart cities.

The Government is confident that the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Development Department would clear both Jammu and Srinagar as smart cities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Development Package for Jammu and Kashmir worth Rs 80,000 crores, has earmarked Rs 500 crores for development of smart cities in the State.

“Every metro rail system would be very important, given our plan to build 100 smart cities and ensure environmentally sustainable transportation facilities,” sources said but added that the Central funding would be available to the cities for metro rail network only after they fulfill the criteria and agreed to fix a sum from their own resources for funding the project.

Most of the metro rail projects, according to sources, would be implemented through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) in which both State Government and the Centre would have equity stakes. While most JVs are being planned as 50:50 ventures, certain innovations are also expected in some of the new projects where Municipal Corporations have expressed their desire to join the proposed SPVs as equity partners.
According to sources, the Government of India has also listed certain conditions which the State Government would require to fulfill on priority before again asking for inclusion of Jammu and Srinagar in the metro rail projects.

New Delhi: The demonetization of old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 has led to a boom in the sales of smart cards of the Delhi Metro.

Sources in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that since the announcement of demonetization, the sale of smart cards has grown over 75 per cent in the national Capital.

As per the data, while the DMRC sold close to 15,000 smart cards every day, the number has jumped to 26,000 per day since the demonetization announcement.

Metro also offers a 10 per cent discount to commuters on payment made through smart cards.

On an average, around 30 lakh people travel by metro on a daily basis, of these an approximate of 70 per cent travel through smart cards. “The rise in the sale and purchase of smart cards has been exponential, largely due to demonetization.

Commuters prefer the smart cards as they can avoid the long queues for tokens and easy transition,” said a DMRC official.

The Delhi metro had recently also decided to increase the maximum limit of smart card recharge from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, temporarily. Commuters of the Metro can avail this increased top up service from December 12 and it will remain effective at least till December 31, 2016.

Delhi Metro | Technical snag on Dwarka- Noida route, maintenance work on violet line

1

New Delhi: Sunday brought some inconvenience and delays for commuters of the Delhi Metro on certain routes.  Metro trains were running behind their schedules due to some technical snag developed in the operation of the services.

The trains stopped for longer than the average stoppage time at most of the stations between Rajeev Chowk and Noida City Centre on the blue line. Announcements were made to calm the nerves of the travelers.

Delhi Metro informed the passengers that ‘trains were running late due some technical problems’.

The Delhi Metro is carrying out some maintenance work between Badarpur Border and Mohan Estate stations on the violet line. The services will be affected for four hours between 12 noon and 4 pm.

Delhi Metro Security | Women with Axe attacks on co-passengers, CISF official suspended

0

New Delhi: A 65-year-old woman sneaked an axe into the Delhi Metro and allegedly attacked a co-passenger during a tiff over a seat. The major security breach was reported at the Sultanpur Metro Station on the Yellow Line. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), responsible for the security on the Delhi Metro, has suspended the on-duty jawan for dereliction of duty.

An inquiry into the incident has been ordered, official sources said. Police let the woman, identified as M Dutta, go after counselling.

The axe was reportedly detected during the X-ray scan of her bag by the CISF jawan when she entered the Hauz Khas Metro station. He then allegedly allowed Ms Dutta to carry the axe as it was small and she had pleaded that she is a poor labourer and uses the tool for minor work.

“While the axe was detected by the on-duty CISF personnel at the entry of the station itself, he probably considered her age while allowing her to take the axe. He probably also misjudged her plea to let her carry the axe saying she was a poor woman. An inquiry has been ordered,” a senior official said.

Ms Dutta, a resident of Gurgaon, was travelling to Huda City Centre when she got into a quarrel with another woman over a seat in the women’s compartment of the train. Enraged at being asked to sit somewhere else, she pulled out the axe and charged at the women. Fortunately, the other passengers in the coach managed to overpower Ms Dutta and seized the weapon, they said.

The woman was then handed over to the CISF who handed her over to police in Gurgaon. After counselling the cops allowed the woman to return to her home.

The CISF has taken the incident seriously and has sought to tighten security protocols in the metro network that carries almost 26 lakh people every day.

Last year, a man had entered the Delhi Metro with a country-made pistol and shot himself within the station premises. A few months back, another man had killed a woman with a sharp weapon, just before the security zone at a station in Gurgaon.
