MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has issued a letter of acceptance to the J Kumar Infraprojects & NACPL JV for a Rs 139.72 cr contract for Mumbai Metro Line 4 & 4A. Under this contract, the JV will implement MultiModal Integration Facilities at 8 Metro Stations of Line 4 and Line 4A.

Afcons Cast First Segment For Bhopal Metro’s Blue Line

BHOPAL (Metro Rail News): The Bhopal Metro Project progressed as Afcons Infrastructure has initiated casting of segments at Anna Nagar Casting Yard for Package BH-05 of Blue Line.

The Blue Line of Bhopal Metro spans 19.915 Km from Bhadbhada Chauraha to Ratnagiri Tiraha through 14 elevated stations.

In December 2024, Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL) awarded Rs 1006.74 crore Package BH-05 to Afcons Infrastructure.

The scope of work under this package includes the construction of the entire Blue Line Viaduct, 13 stations and a ramp leading to Subhash Nagar Depot.

Stations: Bhadbhada Chauraha, Depot Chauraha, Jawahar Chowk, Roshanpura Chauraha, Kushabhau Thakre Hall, Parade Ground, Prabhat Chauraha, Govindpura, Govindpura Industrial Area, JK Road, Indrapuri, Piplani, Ratnagiri Tiraha (excluding an Elevated Passenger Interchange Metro Rail Station).

Phase 1 of the Bhopal Metro consists of 2 corridors with 28 stations in total. Phase 1 is expected to become operational by 2027. The Bhopal Metro Project is estimated to cost Rs. 6941.40 crores.

The contract includes the design and construction of a 38.40 km viaduct, 1 Underground metro station and 32 Elevated Metro stations for Phase 1 of the Project.

Bhubaneswar Metro Project Stalled Amidst Viability Issue

BHUBANESWAR (Metro Rail News): The Bhubaneswar Metro project has encountered a major setback as the state government has decided to scrap the tenders of Phase 1 due to viability concerns.

The former Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, laid the foundation stone of the project on January 1, 2024. The first phase of the project was projected to cost approximately Rs 6,300 crore, covering a distance of 26 km from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia near the Orissa High Court in Cuttack. The phase included plans for 20 stations and potential extensions to Puri, Khurda, and Cuttack.

Krushna Chandra Mohapatra, the Minister for Housing and Urban Development in Odisha, said that the decision to cancel the tender was taken due to delays in implementation and the intention to prevent cost escalations.

He further added, “The metro project initiated by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government wouldn’t have been viable. Our government has formed an inter-minister committee to take a fresh look at the project by studying different aspects, its viability, and to submit a fresh proposal before the project,” as reported by The Indian Express.

Furthermore, Mohapatra indicated that the state government plans to engage in consultations with the central government regarding the project, in contrast to the previous approach adopted by the BJD government, which sought to pursue the initiative independently.

According to the former CM of Odisha, this decision of the government will push Bhubaneswar 10 years back.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was commissioned by the Odisha government to oversee the implementation of the project, which included the tender process and the engagement of various agencies. While preliminary groundwork for the metro project commenced, it faced challenges following the assumption of power by the BJP in Odisha on June 24.

The Chief Minister mentioned, “The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will soon inspect the metro works. Once the CMRS gives clearance, the priority corridor of the Bhopal Metro will be opened for public transport,” as reported by The Print.

PMRDA Initiates Second Trial Run for Pune Metro Line 3

PUNE (Metro Rail News): The Pune Metro Rail Project progressed as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) initiated the second trial run on Line 3’s 4 km stretch between Maan Depot and Station PMR04.

Pune Metro Line-3, also known as the Puneri Metro, is an elevated metro corridor spanning 23.3 km, designed to connect Hinjawadi with Civil Court through 23 elevated stations.

The trial, conducted earlier this week, was carried out at a speed of 40 kmph to assess the readiness of both the track and the associated systems, as stated by Metro officials. A senior PMRDA official mentioned. “We have achieved 88 per cent progress in project completion and will continue with more trial runs along the stretch,”.

The Pune Metro Line 3 is being developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, a joint venture between TATA and Siemens, under the name Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. The deadline for the already delayed Metro Line-3 in Pune is March 2026.

India’s first hydrogen-powered train project progressed as Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the successful trial of India’s first hydrogen-powered rail coach on 25 July 2025. The Driving Power Car was tested at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned, “First Hydrogen-powered coach (Driving Power Car) successfully tested at ICF, Chennai. India is developing a 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will place India among the leaders in hydrogen-powered train technology.”

In February 2023, Indian Railways launched an initiative to operate 35 hydrogen trains, as part of the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally sustainable practices.

In 2023, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Indian Railways has approved a pilot project valued at ₹111.83 crores for the retrofitment of hydrogen fuel cells onto a running Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake, along with the necessary ground infrastructure.

The estimated cost for each hydrogen train is approximately ₹80 crores, with an additional ₹70 crores per route allocated to cover the requisite ground infrastructure.

Central Govt Approves 2.6km Extension of Noida Metro’s Aqua Line

NOIDA (Metro Rail News): The Noida Metro Aqua Line’s 2.6 km extension, spanning from Depot Station to Bodaki, has received the nod from the Government of India. This corridor holds strategic significance, as a multimodal logistics hub is proposed in its vicinity. The project is estimated to cost ₹416.34 crore and is expected to be completed within a three-year timeframe.

On this development, Shri Mahendra Prasad, executive director of NMRC, said, “The 2.6km extension will take metro connectivity deeper into pockets of Greater Noida. This metro corridor will also have an extension to Junpat village, aside from Bodaki. We want to start work on the 11.56km Metro link on priority because it will not only take direct Metro connectivity to distant pockets of Greater Noida but also towards the upcoming Noida Airport. We will start work on this once the central government gives approval,” as reported by Hindustan Times.

At present, the Aqua Line corridor of Noida Metro does not provide a direct link between Greater Noida, Noida, and the Delhi Metro network. On December 27, 2023, NMRC approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for an 11.56 km Metro route which will connect the Botanical Garden Metro station on Delhi Metro’s Blue Line to the Noida Sector 142 station on the Noida Metro’s Aqua Line. However, this route awaits approval from the central government.
