After the successful rollout of the Kochi Water Metro, the central government is gearing up to replicate the model in several other parts of the country. Plans are underway to introduce water-based urban transit systems in 18 to 20 new cities. Systra India has been commissioned to carry out the feasibility study for these systems.

According to Shri Hari Somalraju, Managing Director of Systra, the Kochi project has set a strong precedent for water metro solutions in India. He noted that the upcoming studies will go beyond basic technical assessments as they will examine aspects such as travel demand, mobility patterns, and the broader socio-economic benefits of water transport in urban areas.

The upcoming studies will place strong emphasis on integrating water transport with existing urban mobility systems while minimising ecological impact.

The consultancy will work on identifying viable routes, planning terminal facilities, and designing operational frameworks to provide reliable and commuter-friendly services.

Systra is already playing a major role in India’s metro sector. It serves as the general consultant for Kochi Metro’s second phase.

Shri Somalraju also pointed out the company’s broader involvement in infrastructure projects. Recently, Systra inked an MoU with Vizag Metro. As general consultants, SYSTRA will assist APMRCL in planning, design, and construction supervision of the Visakhapatnam metro rail project.

“The metro rail project will reduce congestion and pollution in the city. This is a historic day, and this project will transform the transport infrastructure of Gurugram and boost connectivity across NCR,” said Mr. Saini while speaking at Gurugram University auditorium.

Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar highlighted that the project is estimated to cost approximately Rs. 5,600 crore, fostering rapid development in Gurugram, Manesar, and Faridabad.

Sharing his thoughts, Mr. Pradeep Aggarwal, Founder & Chairman, Signature Global (India) Ltd., said, “The foundation of the Gurugram Metro Expansion Project marks a landmark moment in the city’s growth journey. Metro connectivity is the backbone of any modern urban ecosystem, and this expansion- spanning 15 km with 15 new stations- will ease mobility, decongest traffic, and unlock new opportunities for both businesses and citizens.”

Moreover, last month, Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL) and Ranjit Buildcon Limited (RBL) were awarded the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) by Gurugram Metro Rail Corporation (GMRL) for the civil construction contract of Phase 1, valued at ₹1,503.63 crore, with a completion deadline of 30 months. CHENNAI (Metro Rail News):The state government of Tamil Nadu has provided a major boost to expand the metro infrastructure in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government has approved the administrative sanction for extending the metro corridor from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram, further strengthening the scope of Chennai Metro’s Phase II project. Originally, this corridor was designed to run between Light House and Poonamallee, but with the latest decision, the alignment will now be stretched to cover Sunguvarchatram as well.

The proposed extension from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram will span 27.9 km and include 14 metro stations along the route. The project has been allocated a total outlay of ₹2,126 crore, of which a substantial share about ₹1,836 crore is earmarked for land acquisition. The extension from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram is part of a larger 52.94 km corridor that will ultimately connect Poonamallee with the proposed Parandur greenfield airport. This ambitious stretch is planned at an estimated cost of ₹15,906 crore.

In the government order (G.O.) issued on 4 September, the State government directed the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to initiate preparatory works, including land acquisition, road development, and related works, to facilitate smooth implementation of the extension.

This move comes soon after the Tamil Nadu government approved the Phase I extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, announced on September 3, 2025. The 15.5 km stretch, connecting the airport with the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam, has been allocated ₹1,964 crore for land acquisition, utility shifting, and allied works.

Concord Develops India’s 1st 100% Indigenous Zero Emission Propulsion System

0
India’s 1st 100% Indigenous Zero Emission Propulsion System

Concord Control Systems Limited (CCSL), India’s leading manufacturer of embedded electronics systems and critical electronic solutions through its Advanced Rail Division,  announced India’s first fully indigenous zero-emission propulsion system. Designed and built entirely in India, this breakthrough highlights India’s engineering capabilities towards the nation’s ambition of achieving net-zero emissions and complete railway electrification by 2030.

The propulsion system is powered by Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries and features a DC chopper-based drive. Unlike conventional diesel engines that idle continuously and consume fuel, Concord’s system operates only when required, delivering significant fuel savings, higher efficiency, and zero emissions.

What makes this development exceptional is its complete indigenous design. Except for a few semiconductor devices, every critical component, including the chopper, Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), driver display, sensors, and controllers, has been designed and manufactured by Concord Control Systems. The system also introduces several technological firsts, such as high-voltage battery integration with choppers, CAN-based Vehicle Control Units, and fibre-optic EMI-immune signal transmission. This makes it a pioneering achievement not just in India but globally.

Speaking on this milestone, Mr. Sadasivan V., Principal Executive Director at Advanced Rail, said, “This propulsion system is proof that India can lead in next-generation rail technology. With this achievement, we have set a reference point that will guide the industry towards sustainable, cost-efficient, and self-reliant solutions.”

Commenting on the milestone, Mr. Nitin Jain, Joint Managing Director, Concord Control Systems Limited, said, “This development is a proud moment not only for Concord but for India’s innovation ecosystem as a whole. By delivering the country’s first 100% indigenous Zero Emission Propulsion System, we are advancing the twin goals of sustainable mobility and self-reliance, while supporting Indian Railways’ target of achieving 100% electrification by 2030.”

The propulsion, retrofitted on a 700 HP diesel-electric platform, delivers 800A peak current to traction motors while integrating modern safety and efficiency features. These include driver-friendly digital displays, CCTV/DVR monitoring, and a Remote Monitoring System (RMS) for predictive maintenance and real-time diagnostics. Together, these advancements reflect India’s capability to deliver safe, reliable, and next-generation rail technology without reliance on imported designs.

GURUGRAM (Metro Rail News): The Gurugram Metro Project is going to progress as the construction of Phase 1 is scheduled to commence by mid-September.

Officials have confirmed the arrival of a critical machine, which is important for excavating the foundations of the metro pillars. The machine has been unloaded near the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) office in Sector 44, adjacent to the existing terminating pillars of the Yellow Line.

The machine can drill up to a depth of 180 meters and can complete a foundation in just 12 hours. The formal ground-breaking ceremony is anticipated to take place later this month, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh and Union Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar likely to be in attendance.
