State Cabinet Gives Nod To The Vishakhapatnam Light Metro Project

VISHAKHAPTNAM (Metro Rail News): On Friday, the state cabinet nodded for the Vishakhapatnam Light metro to span 79.9 Km divided into five corridors. 

Proposition 

The 79.9 Km metro was proposed during the TDP regime only. At that time, it had a 140 km span from Anakapalle to Bhogapuram. 

Latest Plan 

The latest plan includes the construction of 79.9 km of a metro line divided into five corridors: 

  1. Line-1: Gajuwaka – Kommadi
  2. Line-2: Gurudwara Junction – Old Post Office
  3. Line-3: Thatichetlapalem – Chinna Waltair (Chinavalteru / RK Beach)
  4. Line-4: Law College Junction – Marikivalasa (8.21 km)
  5. Line-5: Kommadi – Bhogapuram Airport (25.3 km)

Finance 

The proposed line will be built for Rs 14,300 Crore, of which the central and state governments will bear 20 per cent each while the private investors will arrange the remaining.

Ghaziabad Metro: Blue Line to Extend to Sahibabad Via Indirapuram & Vaishali

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) & UP Housing Board have shown an underlying acceptance of the Blue Line’s extension to Sahibabad in Ghaziabad via Indiarapuram and Vaishali. 

Project Cost 

Delhi Metro is preparing a fresh report on the Metro route from Electronic City to Sahibabad. The project is expected to cost Rs 1,517 Crore.

Financial Plan 

As per the latest proposal, the state government will bear 80% of the costs through GDA and UP Housing Board and make equal contributions. The Central Government will contribute the remaining 20%. The GDA & the UP Housing Board have already discussed the pattern. 

Previous Plan 

As per the earlier plan, the UP government was to bear 50% of the expenses & the central government would have to bear 20% while the 30% was to be borne by GDA, the Housing Board and the Municipal Corporation. 

Location Advantage 

The proposed plan aims to deploy a multi-modal transit model for the NCR commuters and residents, as Sahibabad already has an active RRTS station to cater to the commuters. At the same time, the other end of the Blue Line is already connected with the RRTS at Anand Vihar. 

GDA

The GDA is hopeful of acquiring a loan for the same, owing to its previous track records on repayment of loans. There is also an underlying acceptance of the proposal as much of the areas covered in the extension fall under the GDA.

CRS Inspection Commences on the Howrah-Esplanade Under-water Stretch of the Kolkata Metro

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): The CRS began its week-long inspection on the Esplanade-Howrah Underwater stretch Yesterday with a 3-member team.

The Team   

The CRS team consisted of three people, namely, Brij Mohan, Lalit Kumar & Pramod Kumar, who were there to inspect the stretch for safety measures. The team will be concerned with the fire clearances for stations, ventilation shafts, and under-river tunnels.

Inspection 

The inspection began on Friday around 2:30 in the afternoon and continued till late 7:30 PM. The tram wrapped up the inspection at the terminal Howrah Maidan Station.  

Stations to be covered 

The four stations to be inspected by the CRS include Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah and Howrah Maidan. The team will cover the stations in a BEML rake to run between  Esplanade & Howrah Maidan. 

Week-long Inspection Overview

As previous reports indicate, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will conduct a comprehensive week-long survey. The survey will be divided into two distinct teams, with the first operating from Friday to Monday and the second from Tuesday to Thursday. Notably, the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CMRS), falling under the CRS, will be present for Wednesday’s last leg of the inspection.

CRS Team and Approval Process

The CRS team, functioning under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is responsible for granting mandatory approval for the inauguration of any new railway line in India. Additionally, the inspection of the under-river line by the CMRS establishes a significant precedent in ensuring safety and compliance.

Focus on the East-West Metro Corridor

The Kolkata Metro Line 2, also recognised as the East-West Metro or Green Line, is a prominent rapid transit system in the Indian state of West Bengal. Presently operational between Salt Lake and Sealdah, the future expansion initiative aims to link Howrah by traversing beneath the Hooghly River with a planned eastern extension to Teghoria. Encompassing a total span of 22 km, the extended line will boast 17 stations, stretching from Teghoria (Haldiram) in the east to Howrah Maidan in the west. Notably, 11 stations will be elevated, while the remaining six will be underground.

MMRDA Reinvites Bids for Package C-240 of Mumbai Metro Line-12

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited bids for the civil construction work of the Mumbai Metro’s Orange Line. 

Package C-240

Package C-240 has been formed by amalgamating two packages, CA-185 & CA-186, of Civil construction for which bids were invited further; the tendering process was cancelled in June due to a change of Scope. 

Metro Line 12 

It’s a 22.17 Km long southern elevated section of the under-construction of the 24.9 Km Line 5 at an estimated cost of Rs 4,132 Crore. 

Key Details

The critical details of the tender are: 

  1. Bid Opening Date: January 29 at 11 am
  2. Estimate: Rs. 1877.88 crore
  3. Period of Work: 30 months
  4. Pre-Bid Meeting: January 3, 2024 at 11 am
  5. Bid Submission End Date: January 25, 2024 at 5 pm

Scope of the Contract 

The contract includes Part design and construction of an elevated viaduct and 19 elevated stations, including a connecting line from Vadavli (khu) to the depot of line 12, excluding architectural finishing & pre-engineered steel roof structure of stations. 

Stations on the Line 

The 19 stations on the line are: 

Kalyan, APMC Kalyan, Ganesh Nagar, Pisavali Gaon, Golavli, Dombivli MIDC, Sagaon, Sonarpada, Manpada, Hedutane, Kolegaon, Nilje Gaon, Vadavli (khu), Bale, Waklan, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve, Amandoot.  

One of the Longest  

The package will be one of the most extended packages of civil construction only after Hyderabad Metro’s 31 Km Airport Line that reaims in doll drum as the new government takes over the charge.

Jupiter Wagons bags Contract worth Rs 1,617 Crore from Indian Railways

NEW DELHI  (Metro Rail News): Jupiter Wagons announced on Tuesday that it has bagged a contract worth Rs 1,617 Crores from the Indian Railways. 

Scope of Contract 

The contract scope includes manufacturing and supplying 4,000 BOXNS wagons for a contract value of Rs 1,617 crore. 

BOXNS Wagons

Bogie Open Wagon (BOXN) with Pneumatic Brake carries heavy loads. It can bear an axle load of 20.32 tons with a 75-80 Km/hr speed. 

Jupiter wagons 

Jupiter Group is a leading manufacturer in the railway industry, specialising in producing railway wagons and components for passenger coaches. The company is also known for its expertise in crafting alloy steel castings for rolling stock and track applications. 

Additionally, Jupiter Group extends its manufacturing capabilities to application-specific load bodies for commercial vehicles. Airport Metro On Hold, CM Asks for Alternative Route for Hyderabad Metro

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): The Newly elected CM of Telangana held a detailed review of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project on Wednesday night.

Airport Metro on Hold 

The Chief Minister asked the Hyderabad Metro Rail officials to put the Airport metro from Raidurg to Shamshabad alignment plan and its gender on hold. He has asked HRM Officials to plan an alternative route from MGBS Falaknuma & LB Nagar. 

Alternative Alignment 

The HRM Officials have been directed to Prepare a cost-effective alternative to the Hyderabad Metro. The potential routes include the metro via Mailardevpally, Jalpally and P7 Road, or Barkas-Pahadi Shareef and Srisailam Road.

Economical Alternative 

A straight-line alignment can save costs by running across the open areas of the airport premises, as the entire land belongs to the government. The Chief Minister pointed out this aspect in the meeting held on Wednesday night. 

Earlier Alignment 

The CM remarked that the earlier metro alignment ran along the G0111 area, where the scope of development remains limited, and there is already an excellent transport facility in the form of ORR. 

Hyderabad Metro 

The Hyderabad Metro is a rapid transit system, India’s third longest operational metro network. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 30-kilometre-long stretch from Miyapur to Nagole, with 24 stations, on 28 November 2017. This marked the opening of the longest rapid transit metro line in one go in India, estimated to cost ₹18,800 crore. 

The successful implementation of this metro network has contributed to the efficient transportation of the city’s residents, with approximately 490,000 daily commuters as of February 2020. Phase I of the project includes three lines: 

Line 1 – Red Line – LB Nagar-Miyapur – 29 km (18 mi) 27 stations

Line 2 – Green Line – JBS–Falaknuma 15 km (9.3 mi) 15 stations

Line 3 – Blue Line – Nagole–Raidurg – 28 km (17 mi) 24 stations

The current daily ridership of the Hyderabad metro stands at about 490,000.

Third Rail Work Commences on the Underground Section of The Agra Metro

AGRA (Metro Rail News): As per the latest reports, the laying of the Third Rail system has been completed in the Agra Metro rail depot and the elevated Section of the Agra metro. 

Further Progress 

Further plans include laying the Third rail system on the remaining underground section of the Agra Metro to facilitate hassle-free and seamless functioning of the metro. 

Specifications 

The Third rail technology will run parallel along the tracks of the Agra Metro with no Overhead equipment. It will make the power supply easier and protect it from unwanted elements. The rail setup will operate on 750 volts of DC Current. 

Seamless Functioning 

This arrangement will ensure the seamless and efficient functioning of the Agra Metro, thereby providing commuters a world-class experience in the Urban transportation sector. This will be one of the most innovative and world-class initiatives propagated by the UPMRC. 

Enhanced Efficiency 

This will even contribute to the enhanced efficiency of the Agra Metro network as it won’t be subject to impediments like kites, birds, etc.

One of the notable advantages of the Third Rail System is its unobtrusive nature. Unlike traditional overhead equipment systems, which are susceptible to disruptions caused by birds and kites, the third rail system remains unaffected and ensures an intact aesthetics of the city. What is the Third Rail System?

The Third Rail System, also referred to as a live rail, electric rail, or conductor rail, is a method of supplying electric power to trains through a semi-continuous rigid conductor positioned alongside or between the running rails of a railway track. This system provides direct electrical power to the train, facilitating efficient and reliable operation.

How does the Third Rail System operate?

In the Third Rail System, a supplementary rail track, known as the conductor rail, is installed parallel to the standard railway tracks. This conductor rail typically carries electrical power at 600 or 750 volts, ensuring metro trains’ seamless and continuous operation.

Agra Metro 

Agra metro is a Rapid Transit Metro Project in Agra consisting of 2 metro lines totalling 29.65 Kilometers. The Agra Metro has two corridors: 

Corridor 01

The length of the Sikandra to Taj East Gate corridor is 14.00 km, which is partly elevated and partly underground and comprises 13 stations (6 elevated and seven underground).

Corridor 02

The length of the Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar corridor is 15.40 km, comprising 14 elevated stations.

Commercial operations on the Priority Corridor running from the Taj Mahal Esttae to the Taj Mahal Ramp are scheduled to begin in February 2024 ahead of the initial August 2024 deadline.

Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line Likely to be Fully Operational by 24th December

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): The Kolkata Metro Orange Line’s New Garia-Ruby stretch trial runs began on December 12. 

Trial Runs 

The trials began at 11:59 AM, with the train traversing over the arterial EM Bypass up to Hemanta Mukhopadhyaya Station and back to Kavi Subhas Terminal Station. The trials ended at 5:05 PM, with the train reaching an 80 km/hr maximum speed. The trials were conducted with an AC Medha rake. 

Trial runs dealt with the checks related to tracks, power supply, docking of rake & power supply. 

Inspection 

Mr. P. Uday Kumar Reddy, Metro Railway’s General Manager, inspected the North-South Metro Corridor stretch from Kavi Subhash to Rabindra Sadan yesterday. During the inspection, Mr Reddy extensively examined both the Blue Line and Orange Line sections, focusing on the facilities at Kavi Subhash station. 

He assessed the arrangements for passenger interchange between the Blue and Orange Lines.

CMRS Inspection 

The trials on the line began on September 24, last year, with receiving the nod from CRS on February 7 this year. 

Orange Line: Kolkata Metro

The Kolkata Metro Line 6, or the Orange Line, is a rapid transit line designed to link New Garia with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, passing through two satellite towns, Salt Lake and New Town. This corridor is crucial as it establishes a vital connection between the city’s southern and eastern sectors and Kolkata Airport. The total length of this route is anticipated to be 29.87 km.

Project Background and Challenges

Initially sanctioned in the 2010–11 budget by Mamata Banerjee led-West Bengal Government, with a  deadline of six years and an estimated cost of Rs 3951.98 Crore. However, the project has encountered several setbacks, including delays and impediments arising from challenges such as land acquisition, objections from various authorities, and encroachments.

Stations Along the Line

The Orange Line aims to reduce travel time between the southern fringes of Kolkata and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. It will feature 23 elevated stations, with one underground station and one at-grade station.

Interchanges on the Line

Passengers will have convenient interchange options along the Orange Line. These include connections with Line 4 at Dum Dum Airport, Line 2 at VIP Road (Haldiram), Salt Lake Sector V, and Line 1 at Kavi Subhash. Additionally, Kavi Subhash will provide a Rail Interchange, facilitating connectivity with the Sealdah South Section.

Chandigarh Metro to Feature 3 Corridors with Mostly Elevated Corridors

CHANDIGARH (Metro Rail News): Rail India Technical & Economic Services (RITES) has submitted the Alignment Option Report (AOR) to the Chandigarh administration. 

Phase 1 Corridors  

The proposed 89-km-long Phase 1 of the Chandigarh Metro entails three corridors: 

  1. Paraul (New Chandigarh)-Sarangpur-ISBT Panchkula to Panchkula Extension – 34 km
  2. Rock Garden to Zirakpur ISBT via Industrial Area and Airport- 42 km
  3. Grain Market Chowk, Sector 39, to Transport Chowk, Sector 26- 13 km

Among these, the 3rd Corridor along the Madhya Marg, running from Sector 26 to Sector 39, will be fully elevated. In contrast, the other two will be mostly elevated, with only a few sections underground. 

Phase 2 Corridors  

As per the submitted AOR, Phase 2 of the Chandigarh Metro will be around 25 Km divided into two corridors: 

  1. Airport Chowk to Manakpur Kallar (5 km)
  2. ISBT Zirakpur to Pinjore (20 km)

Development work on Phase 2 will begin only once the development works on the corridors of Phase 1 end by 2034. 

Funding 

The overall estimated cost for the metro corridor is Rs 11,000 Crore, which would be acquired  in the following manner:

Tricity Metro 

Chandigarh Metro is referred to as Tricity Metro as it is a Tricity project. 34.5 km of corridor falls in Chandigarh, 29.5 km in Panchkula and 37 km in Mohali/New Chandigarh. The governing body for the Tricity Metro is the Unified Metro Transportation Authority (UMTA), consisting of 23 members. 

Approval 

UMTA approved the project on July 18 with an extension of Phase 1 from 66 Km to 89 Km, while the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) nodded for the project in September this year. The DPR is expected to be submitted to the authorities by January 2024, while the work will begin in April 2024. 

Need 

Chandigarh urgently requires the establishment of a metro rail system due to various factors, including:

1. Elevated Traffic Volume: The substantial increase in vehicles on the roads necessitates an efficient public transportation alternative.

2. Population Surge: The rising population near Chandigarh underscores the need for a convenient and extensive metro network to accommodate the growing commuter demand.

3. Economic Prosperity and Investments: With escalating affluence and heightened investments in Chandigarh, the city benefits significantly from a well-structured metro system.

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): Dr Manjunath Kanmadi has been appointed South Western Railways’s new Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO). 

Appointment

Kanmadi, a 2013-batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and a qualified doctor from Jamkhandi, Bagalkot district, has assumed the role of IRTS officer, succeeding Aneesh Hegde. 

Background 

Before this appointment, he served in various capacities within the South Western Railway (SWR), including roles such as Deputy Chief Commercial Manager/Passenger Service, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager in the Mysuru and Hubballi divisions, and Divisional Operations Manager in the Hubballi division, according to a statement from the railways. Aneesh Hegde, the outgoing officer, has been posted as Joint Director (Infrastructure)-I at the Railway Board.

South Western Railways 

The South Western Railway (SWR), headquartered in Hubballi, Karnataka, is one of India’s 19 railway zones. In 2003, SWR was formed by reorganising routes from Southern Railways, South Central Railways, and Central Railways.

The railway zone comprises the following divisions:

1. Bengaluru railway division

2. Mysuru railway division

3. Hubballi railway division

4. Kalaburagi railway division (Currently proposed and on hold)

The Mysuru Division of the South Western Railways is set to be recognised as the “Digital Division” upon successfully implementing its current technology harnessing program.
