MMRDA is searching for a consultant to review new rakes design for Mumbai monorail

Mumbai (Metro Rail News): Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken some key decisions recently and have decided to involve Indian manufacturers to develop new rakes. MMRDA is now looking for a consultant who will review the design of new rakes and will take care of other ancillary services such as the timeline of manufacturing, supply, testing and commissioning.

According to the sources, ‘Medha Servo Drives Private Limited’ is at the designing stage. They have already appointed a consultant from their end to look after the work. Meanwhile, the Mumbai monorail team learning from its past mistakes has asked the manufacturer to provide a checklist of components that will be required to be repaired and replaced, in case, after the defect liability period. The source also said that the previous operator SCOMI had not given the checklist of components therefore, the officials were not aware of what components were required. Now in new rakes, they don’t want to face this issue as they already have a list of it. Besides, the manufacturer will also provide a different vendors list from which these components can be procured and added that there are nearly 2500 components in a single monorail rake.

The MMRDA provided two years six months’ time to Medha Servo Drives Private Limited to finish the design, manufacturing, supply testing and commissioning work and six months have already passed. As per MMRDA, in January 2023 first prototype new monorail rake will arrive at its Depot and then the testing and commissioning work will begin. After safety clearance is obtained the rake will be put for commercial operations while the other remaining nine rakes will be provided in the next nine months’ time.

The MMRDA has given the contract for 10 new rake procurement to this Indian manufacturer at a value of over Rs 500 cr and is promoting the Make in India initiative of the Central Government, which is largely appreciable. Currently, the Mumbai monorail services on the track from Chembur to Sant Ghadge Maharaj Chowk run at a frequency of 22 minutes with limited rakes in operation; therefore with new rakes in service, the frequency of monorail will improve offering more trips to the commuters.

Gujarat Govt allocates 772cr for Various Metro and Metrolite projects

GANDHINAGAR (Metro Rail News): Gujarat government have announced their budget 2022-23 on 3 March 2022. In the budget, the government have put up a provision of Rs 772 crores to provide services of Metro Rail and Metrolite in municipal corporations of the state and a provision of INR 700 crores for Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot & Gandhinagar corporations & Dahod municipality under the smart city. When the budget will be finalized, the Metro route’s land price will rise and the FSI in Vadodara, Rajkot & Surat will rise as well.

In Gujarat, only Ahmedabad Metro is available, which is the 12th metro system in India. It is built and operated by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited. The first section of the metro was inaugurated on 4 March 2019 and opened for the public on 5 March 2019, with the East-West Corridor.

If the budget is finalized, it will help majorly in the development of the city as it will improve the transport system which will help the commuters in the long run and will increase the connectivity. However, Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are the only 2 places that are connected by the metro line, so it is still a long way ahead.

DMRC to provide last-mile connectivity through electric e-rickshaws

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which introduced electric feeder buses the previous year under many metro stations, will now operate electric e-rickshaws on some routes with women as the drivers. The service is announced a few days before Women’s Day as it is a step taken to increase women’s employment in this sector.

In October 2020, the Delhi government launched its scheme for registration of 1406 electric e-rickshaws through its transport department, of which 33 per cent were reserved for women drivers. The government in February this year received 20,589 applications, out of which 19,846 were from men and 743 women.

To date, 823 women have applied for the permit of an e-auto, and Transport Minister Ashok Gehlot said that the remaining permits will be given to DMRC and they must ensure that they will hire women drivers for these autos which will run under the metro stations providing the last mile connectivity to the commuters.  The department has also come up with a colour scheme that the autos with lilac colour will be driven by women drivers and the rest of the autos will be blue in colour. This will increase visibility and ensure that the scheme is not being misused.

DMRC already have close to 100 electric feeder buses which can travel about 120 km on a single charge. These e-buses have ‘validators’ installed at the front doors where a commuter can tap a Delhi Metro or Metro DTC smart card and cross a turnstile to enter the vehicle. These plans and schemes are majorly helping in providing jobs to women and easing the travel for the commuters of the Delhi metro.
