Nagpur Metro | NMRC gets CMRS safety clearance, metro services will open in March 2019

Nagpur CMRS Inspection
Nagpur Metro CMRS Inspection of at grade level section

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha-Metro) has announced on Wednesday that they have received first safety clearance from Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) after their two days inspection of 5 km section at-grade level from Khapri to South Airport. The Nagpur Metro is likely to start its first commercial run on a 14-km stretch between Khapri and Sitabuldi in March next year.

MahaMetro Managing Director Brijesh Dixit said that with the first certificate of safety having being issued, “at-grade (ground level)”, for a 5-km section from Khapri to South airport, “way has been paved for the first commercial ride in March 2019”.

“We are planning to start a pre-launch free ride for the under-privileged, like those who are differently-abled, senior citizens and the homeless, on demand at the at-grade section.  Three stations on the stretch have already been completed. The stations, Khapri, New Airport and Airport South, have already received platinum rating from the Indian Green Building Council,” Dixit said.

The Nagpur Metro, covering a total of around 40 km between the two corridors, North-South and East-West, would have 41 stations. Many of them are being developed based on themes, like tiger, forest, tribal and aqua, with the buildings’ facades depicting them. The Nagpur Metro will have many unique features, like two stretches of double-decker sections – 3.5 km Airport to Ajni, and 5.3 km LIC Square to Automotive Square.

Nagpur Metro Rail Project Route Map

These would have the NH7 below and the metro track running above it. In the latter section, four decks would run, one above each other, at one point on Kamptee Road, where a railway bridge passes above the existing highway stretch. The metro proposes to draw 65 per cent of its power from a solar plant to be specially erected solely for the purpose. Two towers, at least 20 storeys each, are slated to come up in Sitabuldi area with metro offering it to private developers on BOT (build operate transfer)basis.

“Where the metro crosses the existing railway line, we are coming up with a unique architectural structure, called balanced cantilever bridge, which will be kind of a suspended bridge,” Dixit said. The Nagpur Metro hopes to become viable, mainly through non-fare box revenue generated through real estate development, as well as through sharing of revenue, which the state government would get on account of the double FSI granted to the entire corridor of 500m on either side of the metro. “We hope to generate 50 per cent of our revenue through non-fare box sources, which would be the highest anywhere,” Dixit said. The Rs 8,640 crore project has a December 19 deadline to complete both the corridors, subject to settlement of remaining land acquisition disputes and pending final designs of certain
structures.

HMRTC has a plan to make a ring of metro in Gurugram city with the eventual goal to reach the last mile. It has not dropped the longer route idea. The option is open with HMRTC and it may consider in the second phase to connect this with sector 21 Dwarka through Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, sector 9, Ashok Vihar and Palam Vihar. The estimated cost of the longer route is Rs 4,591 crore, the official said.

New Delhi: Construction work in the country’s first high speed bullet train project on Mumbai-Ahmadabad route will start from January 2019. According to an official, the land acquisition work for 508 km long route will be completed by this year. This mega project of  1.08 lakh crores is expected to be completed in the end of 2022.

“Railways is going to acquire 1400 hectares of land in Maharashtra and Gujarat for this project. Rs 10,000 crore will be spent in land acquisition. NHSRC is on way to reach the completion of the bullet train project. This agency will have the responsibility to operate high speed rail projects in the country itself”, National High Speed Rail Corporation Managing Director, Achal Khare said.

High Speed Bullet Train India
Mumbai-Ahmadabad High Speed Bullet Train Project Data

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency  (JICA) has also started to release funds for this bullet train project. After completing the project, the distance of Mumbai and Ahmadabad can be completed in just 2 hours instead of 9 hours. “The average operational cost of this project will be around Rs.1000 crore and we are expecting 4% return on this project,” Khare said.

According to the NHSRC, the fare of this high speed route will be Rs. 3,000 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, whereas the fare between Bandra-Kurla Complex and Thane will be Rs. 250. This train will also have a ‘business class’ and its fare is likely to be more than Rs 3,000.

According to survey report, the route for boring under 10 to 15 meters of the sea is almost clear.  This tunnel will be made through the tunnel boring machine.

Undersea Tunnel for Bullet Train
Representative image for undersea tunnel for Bullet Train Project

According to Achal Khare, Managing Director of National High Speed Rail Corporation, in fact, tunnels should be made in 21-km as a part of the 508 km Mumbai-Ahmadabad bullet train corridor. This 21 km area will be 7 km below sea level. To make a tunnel here, the Seismic Velocity Test was conducted so that it can be ascertained in this part of the sea what kind of land is under the ground. Its purpose was that before making the tunnel it was possible to find out there was no problem in the way of the tunnel. This test was done with the help of Japanese experts. The test report was recently received by the Corporation.

It has been said in the report that except for a part of 10 to 15 meters, the entire part of the tunnel is clear in all parts of the tunnel. Even for this small portion, the solution will be searched even before the tunnel is made. Taking the environmental clearance for this tunnel is also not necessary. According to Khare, the elevated track will be built for the rest of the project.

Khare told that the bullet train project has been designed in such a way that the train will be able to run at 320 km. However, if the stops and other times are calculated at the stations, the average speed of the bullet train at this corridor will be 250 km per hour. He said that for this corridor, the land acquisition process has been started for the time being. So far, it is estimated that 1,415 hectares of land will be needed for this project.

The project is estimated to cost 10,000 crores. This entire amount will be given to Indian Railways. It is expected that by the end of this year, land acquisition will be completed for this project.
