Gurugram RRTS corridor to get depot at Dharuhera

GURUGRAM (Metro Rail News): The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) depot of the DelhiGurugram-SNB network will be built off Delhi-Jaipur Expressway in Dharuhera, according to National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

The agency has already identified around 182 acres of land and requested HSVP to hand over it for construction. The city will have seven RRTS stations. The agency has proposed two depots each on its two other rapid rail corridors such as Duhai and Modipuram depots on Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut line, and Murthal and Panipat depots on Delhi-Panipat corridor. The Delhi-Gurugram-SNB corridor will have only one depot, which will be built at Dharuhera.

“Dhauhera will be an important depot in NCR, especially for Delhi and Gurugram. This will serve as an operational and maintenance center. We are also carrying out geotechnical inspections which will be crucial for project designs and implementation,” an NCRTC spokesperson told.

NCRTC has also requested the state government to provide a 13.5-acre plot at IFFCO Chowk to construct the site office. This land will also be used as a store. Apart from serving as a major operational control and maintenance hub of the Delhi-Gurugram-SNB network, this depot may also be used for freight services also.

The development comes after NCRTC decided to explore cargo/logistics services via the corridor during non-peak and lean hours. According to an NCRTC official, the aim is to facilitate sustainable freight movement and curb pollution in Delhi-NCR areas by limiting the usage of the truck and heavy carriage vehicles for commercial activities. “RRTS is envisioned to serve as a more sustainable alternative for urban freight movement in NCR by handling goods at its depots.

We are exploring the option to use these depots for freight services during early mornings and late evenings without compromising on commuter services,” the official said.

Freight service on the RRTS corridors is also expected to mitigate challenges, which include pilferages, lack of cold chain facilities and excessive transportation time owing to entry restrictions, during logistic operations by companies.

In Gurugram, the rail link will be an elevated section. It will start from Old Delhi-Gurugram Road and go via Atul Kataria Chowk, Signature Towers, and Rajiv Chowk. It will go underground from Kherki Daula and will emerge above the ground at IMT Manesar.

Before entering Behror in Rajasthan, the line will be built along Delhi-Jaipur Expressway and go via Dharuhera, Rewari, and Bawal. The Delhi-Gurugram-SNB corridor is expected to be operational by 2025, according to NCRTC.

It adds that there has been an increase in operational expenses owing to salaries, wages, the introduction of six coach trains and maintenance and energy costs. The state government has reimbursed cash losses to the tune of ₹202.27 crores for the period of 2013-2016 and ₹116.39 crores for 2016-17 and partially for 2017-18.

HMDA office is going to shift Ameerpet

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is finally shifting to Ameerpet After a 44-year stay in Secunderabad. Owing to scattered offices at Tarnaka, the government is shifting the HMDA office to Swarna Jayanti complex in Ameerpet soon.

The HMDA office was earlier located in Paigah Palace near Begumpet since its inception in 1975 and continued to function from there till 2008 before the heritage building was handed over to the US consulate. Later, it was shifted to the municipal office complex in Marredpally and to another complex in Tarnaka in 2010.

The municipal administration department has decided to shift the office to Swarna Jayanti complex in Ameerpet and has taken up works to renovate three floors at Rs 8 crore.

However, the idea cut little ice with staffers who claimed that Swarna Jayanti complex has insufficient parking and is congested, while the existing HMDA office has sufficient parking space and has Metro Rail connectivity.

Government officials said the HMDA office was primarily opened in the Secunderabad area as the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority, the urban development authority for Old City, has been functioning from Darushifa for the last 50 years.

PM Modi to inaugurate Kolkata East-west Metro corridor on 24 October

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): It is good news for Kolkata Metro Commuters, the first phase of East-West Metro in the city, stretching 5 kilometers between Salt Lake Sector V- Salt Lake Stadium, On 24 October is expected to inaugurate Kolkata East-West Metro corridor. In 1984 the same day country was flagged-off first metro in Kolkata in the North-South route.

According to a report, The Railway Board officials said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kolkata on the day and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to be in the city too on the day.

The Railway Board is avid to inaugurate the stretch of Kolkata East-West Metro corridor on 24 October, a red-letter day in the history of the country’s rapid transit system, Preparations are underway in full swing to start commercial services between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium from 24 October.

The final test runs for Kolkata’s Line 2 will be conducted for three days, starting October 15. Apart from providing confidence to the team to go ahead with the commissioning of the line, the upcoming trial runs will help gauge the frequency of the service among others. The officials said that if they come across any glitch during the trials, they will shift the inauguration to the first or second week of November.

The service runs will be done to ensure there is no premature failure when the trains start plying. If the section is not flagged off before November 30, another inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will be required before the next launch date.

The first phase of the East-West corridor of Kolkata Metro was originally scheduled to become operational by 2012 but problems including land acquisition, slum relocation, and route alignment delayed the project to 2015. It was then further postponed till 2018 and finally 2019. On August 6, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) paved the way for commissioning of the first phase.

According to sources, even after the elevated section of the East-West corridor of the Kolkata Metro becomes operational, there will be uncertainty over the commissioning of the remaining underground stretch after an entire neighborhood in Bowbazar caved in. There is still no clarity on when boring of the final 1 km stretch of the tunnel will resume. It is only after the link is established that metro trains will be able to ply under the Hooghly river, becoming the first underwater tunnel that will go beneath a tributary of the Ganga river.

Oldest corridors of Delhi Metro’s to get eight-coach trains

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): By March 2021, to accommodate more passengers Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is going to convert all six-coach trains on its oldest corridors — Red (Rithala-Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda), Blue (Dwarka-Noida City Centre) and Yellow (Samaypur Badli-HUDA City Centre) — into eight-coach trains.

DMRC is procuring 120 coaches for this purpose, which will be added in phases. The Blue and Yellow lines are the busiest corridors of Delhi Metro and have mostly eight-coach trains. But there are still some six-coach trains left and these will be fully converted into eight-coach sets.

Red Line, which is the metro’s oldest corridor, on the other hand, only has six-coach trains. In fact, Red Line had mostly four-coach trains that were upgraded to six-coach sets gradually. In November 2013 DMRC first introduced a six-coach train on this corridor.

The first six-coach train introduced by Delhi Metro was on December 23, 2010, on Blue Line, and it subsequently introduced six-coach trains on Yellow Line from February 6, 2011. Similarly, the first eight-coach metro train was introduced on December 24, 2012, on Yellow Line and on August 19, 2013, on Blue Line.

Red Line has 39 six-coach trains, which were all manufactured by South Korean company Rotem. Yellow Line has 12 six-coach trains, manufactured by Germany-based Bombardier. Blue Line has nine six-coach trains, out of which eight are of Bombardier and one Rotem.

A DMRC official said, “By March 2021 all these broad gauge six-coach trains are likely to be converted into eight-coach trains in a phased manner, requiring 120 coaches for which tenders were awarded recently”.

He said, “Of the 120 coaches, 80 are compatible with Rotem trains and 40 with the Bombardier design”. At present, the total number of commissioned trains in the metro network is 336, which is made up of 2,206 coaches.
