PUNE (Metro Rail News): The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) on Sunday conducted a trial run on a 6-km-long stretch between the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Phugewadi stations. The priority stretch falls on the PCMC-Swargate metro corridor.

A year ago in January 2020, the first trial run was held between PCMC and Sant Tukaram Nagar, a stretch spanning one km. The work on the stretch was expected to finish around April-May this year but was delayed by the Covid-induced lockdown. The train for the trial run consisted of three coaches and left the PCMC station at 1.30 pm and reached the Phugewadi station at 2 pm on Sunday.

The trains that will ply in Pune will have three coaches and the capacity to hold between 950 and 970 passengers. One coach will be reserved for women. All coaches of the train are interconnected to facilitate movement from one coach to another. The trains are made of stainless steel and can run at a maximum speed of 90 kmph.

Delhi Metro to HC says Platform Screen Doors Not Possible At all Stations

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): All elevated stations in the 118.9km phase-2 network will have platform screen doors (PSD) to prevent commuters from crossing or jumping on to the tracks according to official sources at CMRL.
Metro rail will construct 80 elevated stations to link a nearly 76km stretch in three corridors in the phase. In that, construction for a portion of the line on corridor-4 between Power House in Kodambakkam and Poonamallee may begin in 2021.
The detailed project report for the phase-2 project said while underground stations will have full platform screen doors from the platform to the ceiling, elevated stations will have half-height PSDs.

“PSDs are mainly provided at metro stations to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers,” the report said. And one of the major reasons, metro rail, said was, “It prevents accidental falls from the platform onto the lower track area, suicide attempts and homicides by pushing.” Phase-2 will have 48 underground stations covering nearly 43km according to a news report by TOI.

Other advantages of installing PSDs include preventing accidents when service trains pass through stations at high speeds, reduces the wind felt by passengers caused by piston effect which could in some circumstances make people fall over the tracks. The doors cut power consumptions in underground stations by preventing air-conditioned air from escaping and improve the sound quality of platform announcements as background noise from the tunnels and trains are reduced.

Singapore and Malaysia Terminate High-Speed Rail Project

SINGAPORE (Metro Rail News): A multi-billion-dollar high-speed rail link between Singapore and Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur has been terminated. The two countries were unable to reach an agreement on the project after Malaysia sought changes because of the pandemic’s economic impact, according to a joint statement Friday. Malaysia will have to compensate Singapore for costs already incurred, the city-state’s transport ministry said in a separate statement.

The announcement came just after a Dec. 31 deadline for the second and final extension of the suspension of the project, which was first mooted a decade ago and given the green light in 2013. In June, the Southeast Asian neighbours had agreed to put the development, which has already incurred multiple suspensions, on hold again amid a discussion around costs.

The on-again, off-again 350-kilometre high-speed rail link would have cut travel time between the centres down to about 90 minutes versus more than four hours by car. Although flying between the two only takes about an hour, that’s a lot longer once airport check-in and security is taken into account.

The service was due to start in 2026.“In light of the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the Malaysian economy, the Government of Malaysia had proposed several changes to the HSR project,” according to the joint statement by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Malaysia had proposed changes in the project structure, alignment and station design as well as advancing the start of construction by two years to give a boost to the economy battered by the pandemic, Malaysian Economy Minister Mustapa Mohamed said in a separate statement
