MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC) has started the process to construct 20 railway stations on the 235.15-km broad-gauge rail on Pune-Nashik semi-high speed rail line.

This ambitious project is estimated to cost Rs 16,039 cr and is expected to be completed in 1,200 days. This line will have 24 stations and 18 tunnels on the route passing through Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts and is claimed to be the first low-cost semi-highspeed rail corridor in the country which will provide seamless connectivity to industrial zones of Pune and Nashik, such as Alandi, Chakan, Khed, Manchar, Narayangaon, Sinnar, Satpur.

The construction of approximately 20 stations in the Pune-Nashik line, including Pune, Hadapsar, Manjari, Wagholi, Alandi, Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata, Bota, Sakur, Ambore, Sangamner, Nimon, Nandur Shingote, Sinnar, Muhdari, Wadgaon and Nashik has been started.

Kavach – India’s train safety system developed by Indian Railways

0

DELHI (Metro Rail News): The successful trial of Kavach which is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System for enhancing the safety of running trains has been conducted today in the presence of Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways. During the trial, the driver didn’t stop the train but the train stopped automatically when it sensed another train coming from the other side avoiding a collision. Kavach conforms to SIL (Safety Integrity Level)-4 which is to the highest level of safety certification.

Kavach has been developed indigenously by research designs and standards organization (RDSO) in association with three Indian Vendors. According to Indian Railways, it is the cheapest yet the best protection system in the world. KAVACH has this unique feature that initiates automatic whistling without any intervention from the Loco pilot. The amalgamation of technologies such as Relay Based, UHF Radio, RFID, GSM and GPS will collectively aid in the effective and smooth functioning of this system.

Announced in the 2022 Union Budget as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, 2000 Km of the rail network is planned to be brought under Kavach. In addition to the trial section of 250 km, at present Kavach is under implementation on 1200 Route km of South-Central Railway.

It has been deployed on over 1098 Route Kms & 65 locos in ongoing projects of South-Central Railway. It is planned to be implemented on Delhi–Mumbai & Delhi–Howrah corridors as a part of the “Mission Raftar” project.

To make Kavach a world class ATP system the few additional features that will be incorporated in the future are:

  • Direct interface with Interlocking
  • Functionality for Temporary Speed Restrictions
  • Development of Balise for Kavach
  • Development of Kavach on LTE

This system creates a safety envelop around trains and if two trains approach each other, then both automatically stop. This will also help in bad weather conditions and foggy weather when there are chances of more accidents

Mumbai (Metro Rail News): Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken some key decisions recently and have decided to involve Indian manufacturers to develop new rakes. MMRDA is now looking for a consultant who will review the design of new rakes and will take care of other ancillary services such as the timeline of manufacturing, supply, testing and commissioning.

According to the sources, ‘Medha Servo Drives Private Limited’ is at the designing stage. They have already appointed a consultant from their end to look after the work. Meanwhile, the Mumbai monorail team learning from its past mistakes has asked the manufacturer to provide a checklist of components that will be required to be repaired and replaced, in case, after the defect liability period. The source also said that the previous operator SCOMI had not given the checklist of components therefore, the officials were not aware of what components were required. Now in new rakes, they don’t want to face this issue as they already have a list of it. Besides, the manufacturer will also provide a different vendors list from which these components can be procured and added that there are nearly 2500 components in a single monorail rake.

The MMRDA provided two years six months’ time to Medha Servo Drives Private Limited to finish the design, manufacturing, supply testing and commissioning work and six months have already passed. As per MMRDA, in January 2023 first prototype new monorail rake will arrive at its Depot and then the testing and commissioning work will begin. After safety clearance is obtained the rake will be put for commercial operations while the other remaining nine rakes will be provided in the next nine months’ time.

The MMRDA has given the contract for 10 new rake procurement to this Indian manufacturer at a value of over Rs 500 cr and is promoting the Make in India initiative of the Central Government, which is largely appreciable. Currently, the Mumbai monorail services on the track from Chembur to Sant Ghadge Maharaj Chowk run at a frequency of 22 minutes with limited rakes in operation; therefore with new rakes in service, the frequency of monorail will improve offering more trips to the commuters.

DMRC to provide last-mile connectivity through electric e-rickshaws

0

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which introduced electric feeder buses the previous year under many metro stations, will now operate electric e-rickshaws on some routes with women as the drivers. The service is announced a few days before Women’s Day as it is a step taken to increase women’s employment in this sector.

In October 2020, the Delhi government launched its scheme for registration of 1406 electric e-rickshaws through its transport department, of which 33 per cent were reserved for women drivers. The government in February this year received 20,589 applications, out of which 19,846 were from men and 743 women.

To date, 823 women have applied for the permit of an e-auto, and Transport Minister Ashok Gehlot said that the remaining permits will be given to DMRC and they must ensure that they will hire women drivers for these autos which will run under the metro stations providing the last mile connectivity to the commuters.  The department has also come up with a colour scheme that the autos with lilac colour will be driven by women drivers and the rest of the autos will be blue in colour. This will increase visibility and ensure that the scheme is not being misused.

DMRC already have close to 100 electric feeder buses which can travel about 120 km on a single charge. These e-buses have ‘validators’ installed at the front doors where a commuter can tap a Delhi Metro or Metro DTC smart card and cross a turnstile to enter the vehicle. These plans and schemes are majorly helping in providing jobs to women and easing the travel for the commuters of the Delhi metro.
