Trials of S.N. Junction Station and Thripunithura Station Stretch of Kochi Metro Will Begin Today

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Trials on the 1.18 Km stretch of the Kochi metro running between SN Junction Station & Thripunithura Station will be held today. 

Full Phase:01 

The Commissioning of this line would mark the full commissioning of Phase 1 of the Kochi Metro. The other components like signalling, telecom and traction works will be put on trial with the same, a press release from the Kochi metro said. 

Innovation 

This is the first metro station of the Kochi metro to use the Open Web Girder Technology. Such an arrangement offers enhanced durability and strength. It provides immense flexibility in design in the construction of metro stations. 

It allows for the quick installation of civil structures, ensuring higher work efficiency. 

Kochi Metro, Phase 1

Kochi metro, Phase 1, also called Blue Line, runs from Aluva to SN Junction, covering a distance of about 26.8 Km. It is a fully elevated line with 22 stations with a depot spanning 23.6 hectares. 

The 1.63 km long line has 1 station and a fully elevated structure.

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Larsen & Toubro (L&T) recorded a first breakthrough for its TBM DZ1123 at Kishangarh Station’s Crossover for Delhi Metro’s 23.622 Km Silver line. 

Commissioning 

The TBM was commissioned in April 2023 from Chhattartpur station’s west end to build a 1274 m tunnel for the down line in 8 months. Notably, it is the 2nd breakthrough for the Delhi Metro’s  Phase 4 project.

Package DC-09 

It runs from Kishsngarh to Saket-G Block, a distance of 6.51 kilometres. The package runs on 4 TBMs deployed by L&T. It was awarded to L&T on March 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 1428 Crore to be completed within a deadline of 42 months or 3.5 years. 

This has four stations in between: 

  1. Chhattarpur, 
  2. Chhattarpur Mandir, 
  3. IGNOU and 
  4. Neb Sarai

It comprises the design & construction of twin tunnels (for both up and down lines) utilising Shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), a Cut and Cover Tunnel box, an Underground Ramp, and the establishment of four Underground stations, namely Chhattarpur, Chhattarpur Mandir, IGNOU, and Neb Sarai. The project also involves the creation of entry/exits and connecting subways linking Aerocity to the Tughlakabad Corridor as part of Phase-IV of the Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System 

Finance 

JICA is financing the Package through a Rs 8, 390 Crore ODA loan with a 42 months deadline.

Silver Line, Delhi Metro 

The silver line of the Delhi Metro runs from Delhi Aerocity to Tughlaqabad. It is a 23.62 Km long line with four elevated & 11 underground stations. It has a total of 15 stations as Tughlakabad, Tughlakabad Railway Colony, Anandmayee Marg Junction, Tigri, Khanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Saket G Block, Saket, Lado Sarai, Mehrauli, Kishangar, Masoodpur, Vasant Kunj (Sec-D), Mahipalpur and Delhi Aerocity.

Bangalore (Metro Rail News): TBM Tunga of the Bangalore Metro achieved its second breakthrough on the 21.26 Km Pink Line. 

Tunnelling Assignment 

The TBM has constructed a tunnel of 1,184 meters in length in 401 days. It was commissioned on October 31, 2022, between Venkateshpura and KG Halli. It is the 21st of the 24 tunnels built on the 21.26 Km Pink Line.

Earlier Assignment 

The TBM was earlier deployed to build a 1,260-meter-long tunnel running between Venkateshpura and Tannery Road. It was first commissioned on July 23, 2021, when it took 13 months for its first assignment. 

Texture 

Its 1,184 km long path comprises 405 of rock, 40% of soil, and 20% of both. It is the primary reason it could tunnel only 2.99 meters daily.

Total Tunneling 

Out of 20.991 Km of the tunnelling target, 18.823 meters, nearly 89.70 stands complete. 

Further Development 

With the unfolding of this development, the twin tunnels connecting the South Ramp to Venkatreshpura are further ready for civil works.

The BMRCL had deployed 9 TBMs on the Pink line to construct 20991 kms of the tunnel. Out of 9, 7 TBMs have already completed their task, while the TBM 3rd drive of Tunga & 2nd drive of Rudra remains to be completed.

Update on Stations of Pink Line 

Stations falling between Dairy Cicle & Shivajinagar have achieved 70-90% completion, while those between Cantonment & Tannery Road have achieved  85% completion. Stations like Venkateshpura, KG Halli and Nagavara stand at 65% completion. 

Pink Line, Bangalore Metro 

The 21.26 Km-long Pink line of the Bengaluru metro has a 13.76 Km Underground section & a 7.5 Km elevated section. It has a total of 18 stations, including 12 underground. BMRCL hopes to complete all civil & track-laying works on the Pink Line by the second half of 2024. It is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 11,500 Crore.

NCRTC to Soon Begin Trial Runs on the 25 km stretch of the RRTS Corridor

DELHI (Metro Rail News): National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is about to begin the trial runs on the 25 km of the Delhi-Meerut-Ghaziabad RRTS Corridor that connects Duhai Depot to Meerut South. 

Trials 

The trials will include a comprehensive testing of trains and other necessary infrastructure, which are expected to commence this month. 

Featured Stations 

The 25 Km stretch entails four major Stations-  Muradnagar, Modinagar (north), Modinagar (south) in Ghaziabad and Meerut (south). Three of the four stations are in the advanced stages of completion, while the Meerut (south) station, a comparatively big station, is under construction. Efforts are underway to complete the infrastructure by the end of March 2024. 

Connectivity 

The 25 km long stretch covers cities like Muradnagar, Modinagar and Meerut. This will facilitate easy and convenient transportation for the people of these cities. It will connect many commuters, including students and office goers. 

Prospective RRTS 

With the commissioning of the 25 km long stretch between Ghaziabad’s Duhai Depot & Meerut (south), the total functional length of RRTS will go to 42 Kilometers. It will activate the RRTS stretch from Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to Meerut (south) in Meerut.

Public Response   

The active stretch of RRTS between Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to Duhai Depot has already acquired a ridership of 5,000-10,000 commuters. It is expected to rise as the 42 km long stretch of the RRTS will get commissioned. 

Future Developments 

Once the 25 km-long stretch of the RRTS gets commissioned, the NCRTC plans to shift its focus on the RRTS link connecting Sahibabad with Delhi and further on Meerut to Modipuram with a local metro module in Meerut.   

RRTS

The Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a significant and fast train system being built to connect places near Delhi. It will be 82.15 kilometres long, linking Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Ghaziabad and Meerut. They are currently building the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut part, costing about Rs 30,000 crore.

The first part of this train system, called Namo Bharat, was opened by Prime Minister Modi on October 20th. It covers 17 kilometres and has five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot. The Namo Bharat trains can go as fast as 180 km/h, and tickets cost between Rs 20 and Rs 50 for regular seats and Rs 50 to Rs 100 for better seats.

This fast train project also includes other routes connecting Delhi to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Alwar in Rajasthan, and Panipat in Haryana.

Chennai Metro Awards E&M Contract Worth Over Rs 130 Crore to Voltas

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) awarded Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Voltas, with Line 5’s electrical & mechanical (E&M), fire protection, ventilation and air-conditioning work.

Specifics of the Contract  

The value of the contract amounts to Rs 137.86 Crore with a completion deadline of 810 days or 2.2 years. The contract is to be operationalised on the 44.6 Km long Pink line of the Chennai metro running between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur 

Package C5-EM-04

The scope of the contract involves Supply, installation, testing, commissioning and training of electrical, fire protection, and VAC works for 22 Elevated Stations from Koyambedu Market Metro to Elcot Park Metro, including Viaduct between the stations for Corridor-5 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, Phase-II

Scope of Work 

The contract scope entails system works at 22 elevated stations and viaducts between Koyambedu Market and Elcot Park stations. 

Bids Invited 

Bids for the same were invited in February 2023, for which the bidders were declared in June 2023, while financial and evaluation took months, and the contract was finally awarded to Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Voltas. 

Chennai Metro, Phase 2 

Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Project pitches for a 118.9 km Network consisting of 3 corridors, namely: 

  1. Corridor 3: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 Km)
  2. Corridor 4: Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 Km)
  3. Corridor 5: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (45 Km) 

Currently, 37 out of the 61 packages, encompassing Civil, Track, and System components for Corridor 3, Corridor 4, and Corridor 5, have been granted, and construction is underway. The project is scheduled for completion by the conclusion of 2026.

VARANASI (Metro Rail News): On November 28, 2023, at the New Loco Test Shop of Banaras Locomotive Works, General Manager Shri Basudev Panda dedicated the 10,000 locomotive WAP7 to the nation, decorated with flowers, after formal worship. 

Record Established 

Congratulations to the BLW officers and employees on this historic achievement; the General Manager said that this record results from our officers’ and employees’ hard work and efficiency.

Journey so far 

Bananas Locomotive Works, earlier known as Diesel Locomotive Works, started its journey by producing the first locomotive based on ALCO loco technology and has set a record not only in the production of locomotives but also in the horsepower of locomotives. With growth, new technologies have also been developed. BLW started manufacturing electric locos from the year 2017. Currently, BLW is manufacturing WAP7 for passenger service and WAG9 for freight locomotives for railways and producing locomotives for non-railway customers and exports. 

Till now, BLW has manufactured 1687 electric locomotives, 7498 diesel locomotives, 172 exported locomotives in 11 countries, 634 locomotives for non-railway customers, 01 dual (diesel+electric) mode locomotive, 08 diesel to electric converted locomotives.

Foundation Laying 

Notably, the foundation stone of BLW was laid by the first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, on 23 April 1956. BLW came into existence in August 1961. On January 03, 1964, the first broad gauge WDM2 was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri and in November 1968, the first-meter gauge locomotive YDM4 was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Shri Murarji Desai. BLW has created history by manufacturing 10,000 railway engines since its inception.

The 10,000th Loco 

The commissioned 10,000 AC-AC 6000 HP passenger locomotive WAP7- 37638 is being sent to the Lallaguda Electric Loco Shed of South Central Railway. It is equipped with critical features like 

  1. RT18-real-time information system
  2. Air-conditioned driver cab for summers, 
  3. Provision of hot air for drivers during winter, 
  4. HOG- head-on generation for train lighting 
  5. Regenerative brake system, 
  6. Speed of 140 km per hour.

In the inauguration ceremony, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer Shri S.K.Srivastava, Principal Chief Material Manager Shri Rajneesh Gupta, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer Shri Shishir Dutt, Principal Financial Advisor Shri Neeraj Verma, Principal Chief Engineer Shri Vinod Bampal, Principal Chief Medical Officer Dr Devesb Kumar, Principal Chief Personnel Officer Shri Ranvijay, Chief Vigilance Officer Shri P.K.Chaudhary, Senior Deputy General Manager Shri Vijay, Chief Electrical Engineer-Loco Shri Arun Kumar Sharma along with a large number of department heads, officers, employees and staff council members Shri Amit Kumar, Shri Manish Kumar Singh were present.

Delhi-Meerut RRTS Nears 67% Physical Progress

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Shri Kaushal Kishor, The Minister of State (MoS) for the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the RRTS has achieved nearly 67% progress on Physical construction. 

Expenditure Incurred 

As per the MoS statement, the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS has incurred an expenditure amounting to Rs 18,160.81 crore, nearly 59.9% of the total fund allocated for the Corridor. 

Total Budget Allocation

In a written response to a question, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore said the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor was sanctioned for Rs 30,274 crore.

Funding 

The Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor, spanning 82 kilometres, is under construction with an estimated cost of Rs 31,632 Crore. The debt structure involves a 60:40 equity ratio, fully facilitated by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The ADB has provided a total of $1552 million, constituting around 45% of the overall funds allocated for the project.

The Central government has contributed Rs 5,687 crore, while the Uttar Pradesh Government has given Rs 5,828 crore & over Rs 1150 crore by the Delhi government. 

RRTS

The Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a comprehensive mass rapid transit network spanning 82.15 kilometres, linking Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan with Ghaziabad and Meerut. The construction of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is currently in progress, with a total expenditure of nearly Rs 30,000 crore. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the initial phase of the priority corridor, covering 17 kilometres and featuring five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guildhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.

On October 20th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s first RAPIDX train, Namo Bharat, off Sahibabad Station. These trains are engineered to reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h, offering ticket prices ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 50 for standard coaches and Rs 50 to Rs 100 for premium coaches.

The RRTS initiative encompasses semi-high-speed rail corridors connecting Delhi to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Alwar in Rajasthan, and Panipat in Haryana.

Kochi Metro Phase 2 Gets a Boost of Rs 378.57 from Kerela Government

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): On December 4, the Kerala government released Rs 378.57 crore to construct Kochi Metro Phase 2, passed in 2018. 

The Expansion 

The sanctioned funds will be utilised to construct an 11.2 km Pink line under Kochi Metro Phase 2. It will run from Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad through InfoPark. 

DPR 

The centre approved the DPR in September 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,957.05 Crores. As per KMRL, it will be a spur line from Jawaharlal Nehru Park to InfoPark II in Kakkanad.  It is a wholly elevated line. 

Total Stations

The total number of stations on the line goes to 11, which are as follows: Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, KINFRA, InfoPark 1 / Smart City 1, and InfoPark 2 / Smart City 2

Engeeniering Specifications 

In the upcoming Phase 2 of the metro project, two distinctive spans are planned, each featuring a steel truss of over 60 meters in length. These spans, reminiscent of the one constructed between Milma and Tripunithura in Phase 1, will be strategically located at the Palarivattom bypass crossing and the existing Phase 1 crossing near St Martin Church, Palarivattom Junction

With Particular Emphasis on women Passengers 

The 11/2 km line has been named the Pink Line to emphasise the safety of Women working at Infopark. This will ensure a safe and convenient transit system to ease their stress and ensure a safe and sensible environment, especially at night. 

Other important updates: 

  1. SYSTRA S.A. – SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd. JV has been appointed as the General consultant for the project. 
  2. Egis Rail has been appointed Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) for the Project. 
  3. Bidding for Civil Package KBC3, which entails designing and constructing an Elevated Viaduct and 10 Elevated Stations, is underway. 

Kochi Metro, Phase 2 

It entails an 11.2 Km long Pink Line connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with InfoPark at an estimated cost of Rs 1,957.05 Crores. The phase will likely be funded by a loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) with around a 3% interest rate.

E5 Trains worth Rs 7,000 Crore to hit the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railways will introduce 18 new trains from the E5 series of the Shinkansen technology into its upcoming fleet for the Mumbai-Ahmnedabd bullet train project. 

The Deal 

 It has been planned that the Indian railways will acquire 18 trains of the E5 series for the upcoming fleet of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. At the same time, the Japanese company has also agreed to the technology transfer. The total cost of the deal is Rs 7,000 crore. 

E5 Trains 

These trains have been built using  Japanese Shinkansen Technology, which holds the highest level of safety assurance in the entire segment. These also suit India’s climate and topography to facilitate the needs of the prospective Bullet Train corridor. 

The trains also have an automatic braking system that comes into force during over-speeding. 

Rakes 

The rakes for the train will also be supplied by the Japanese company only. These would initially be bright from Japan only. 

Trials

While addressing the plans to overhaul the country’s rail network and services, the railways minister announced that the Surat-Bilmora stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train will be commissioned by August 2026. 

Latest Updates on MAHSR Corridor

As per the latest reports, the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) Station has already achieved nearly 15% development, with NHSRCL deploying nearly six bridges in Gujarat. Bridges have been built over six rivers of Gujarat: 

  1. Par River (Valsad District)
  2. Purna River (Navsari District) 
  3. Mindhola River (Navsari District) 
  4. Ambika River (Navsari District) 
  5. Auranga River (Valsad District) 
  6. Venganiya River (Navsari District)

NHSRCL has already completed 100 Km of Viaducts & 250 km (s) of pier erection for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project.  The reinforced concrete (RC) track bed laying has already begun in Surat.   

MAHSR Corridor 

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Railway (MAHSR) represents India’s inaugural high-speed train corridor linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad, with an estimated cost of 1.08 lakh crore. The central government has committed to providing ₹10,000 crore, while Gujarat and Maharashtra will each contribute ₹5,000 crore. The balance of the funds will be secured through a loan from Japan with a nominal interest rate of 0.1%.

UPMRC Invites bids for Agra Metro’s Elevated Viaduct Work Worth over Rs 1500 Crores

LUCKNOW (Metro Rail News): UPMRC has invited bids for constructing the Main Line elevated viaduct from Agra Cantt metro station to Kalindi Vihar Metro station under the package AGCC-07. 

Scope Of Work

The scope of work for the contract includes: 

  1. Design and Construction of Main Line Elevated Viaduct from Agra Cantt. Metro Station to Kalindi Vihar Metro Station
  2. 2.61 Km Viaduct Connection from Sadar Bazar Metro Station to existing Corridor-1 Depot 
  3. 0.53 Km viaduct connecting Line 2’s Kalindi Vihar Depot 
  4. Civil, Associated Ancillary Structures, Architectural Finishes, Water Supply, Sanitary Installation, Drainage, External Development, Fire Fighting, Fire Detection, E&M works and PEB structures in Corridor-2 

Key Details: 

Significant details of the contract are as follows: 

  • Deadline: 24 months
  • Estimated Cost: Rs. 1529.29 crore
  • Pre-Bid Meeting: December 19 2023 at 3 PM
  • Bid Submission Deadline: January 18 2024 at 3 PM
  • Technical Bid Opening: January 19 2024 at 3 PM

Package AGCC-07 includes 14 elevated stations: Agra Cantt, Sadar Bazar, Pratap Pura, Collectorate, Agra College, Hariparvat Chauraha, Sanjay Place, M.G. Road, Sultanganj crossing, Kamla Nagar, Ram Bagh, Foundary Nagar, Agra Mandi & Kalindi Vihar. 

Source of Funds 

As per the tender document, UPMRC has acquired a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and intends to apply some loans to payments under this contract. 

Minimum Eligibility Criteria 

The minimum eligibility for the tenderers goes as:

(i) The tenderers will be qualified only if they have successfully completed or substantially completed  similar work(s) as a prime contractor/ member of JV, completion date (s) of which falling during last seven years ending last day of the month previous to the month of tender submission end date as given below: 

  1. At least one “similar work”  of the value of INR 1223.43 Crore or more.

OR 

At least Two “similar works,”  each of value INR 764.65 Crore or more value.

OR 

At least three “similar works,” each of value INR 611.72 Crore or more value.

  1. Liquidity: The tenderer must have liquidity of at least Rs. 109.24 Crores.

Corridor 01

The length of the Sikandra to Taj East Gate corridor is 14.00 km, which is partly elevated and partly underground and comprises 13 stations (6 elevated and seven underground).

Corridor 02

The length of the Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar corridor is 15.40 km, comprising 14 elevated stations.
