Chennai Metro | Commuters faces trouble for phone connectivity at underground station

Chennai: Metro commuters might not be able to use their phones at underground station. Blame it on the ongoing squabble between Chennai Metro Rail officials and Telecom companies. This tussle is over the contract and payment delays service connectivity.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)in May 2017 started operation of the section between Nehru Park and Thirumangalam.  Currently it runs metro train in around 15km underground section starting from Central Metro to Thirumangalam as well as from AG-DMS to Saidapet.

It is only Jio users who get mobile connectivity from Nehru Park to Thirumangalam. Unfortunately, other Telecom users are unable to connect in the underground section. They travel without signal when the train passes by underground stations.

Sources in CMRL inform that Telecom providers are BSNL are not keen to sign a contract. They are not willing to pay for connecting their network to a booster installed at underground metro stations to make available signals to mobile phones.

Telecom players like BSNL have already outsourced work to private company for maintenance of cell phone towers. CMRL on the other hand has signed a contract with another company for installation, commissioning and maintenance of signal boosters that are set up at all Chennai metro stations.

The blame game has already started with BSNL sharing that CMRL is charging high fees for linking to booster. BSNL officials explain that they are willing to put up technical interface to improve mobile connectivity at underground metro stations. CMRL that has already appointed another contractor is not willing to budge as per sources.

A Telecom company official says that if CMRL wants to improve mobile connectivity at underground station, it should listen to Telecom companies. They should not use the linking to booster as a means to generate revenue.

CMRL is assuring that they are doing everything they can to improve mobile connectivity. An official also shared that Telecom companies like BSNL have a problem with fees, they should approach them directly. This will help in resolving the issue faster.

Delhi Metro | DMRC receive only 18%revenue from Delhi Metro Phase III

Delhi Metro’s driverless trains start their operation from Thursday between Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar

New Delhi: The recently released official documents show that the Delhi Metro, which had set a target of Rs 2,505 crore to raise from property development in its Phase III properties, has been able to meet only 18% of that amount so far.

In June the board meeting of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) with an official, meanwhile of meeting they share the concern that the company may not be able to meet the target if the issue related to policies of the DDA the land-owning agency are not resolved.

The DMRC documents also stated that during Phase III, the earnings required to be realized from property development was Rs 2,505 crore.  Due to various issues, the corporation has been able to earn only approximate Rs 462 crore. There is also the shortfall of approximately Rs 2,043 crore.

The Magenta line which is fully operational and a portion of the pink line has been open for the public are the two major corridors of Phase III. The delay in work was mainly due to major shortfall assumes significance against the backdrop of Chief Minister  Arvind Kejriwal’s repeated insistence that Metro should diversify its revenue-earning channels to reduce dependence on fares.

The official also said that the DDA is counting the operation parts of stations such as concourse, platforms, and technical rooms, for the counting of FAR in case of DMRC, due to which there is a scarcity of space for property development at the stations.

The DMRC said that the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) policy, which will enable construction of residential and commercial properties alongside Metro corridors, has also not been finalized thus hampering Metro’s efforts.  It is not being exempted from paying additional FAR charges and the non-availability of permission to it for residential property development.

The issues are addressed as and when they are brought to the agency’s notice, said DDA V-C Singh.

Even though the DMRC had taken up as many as five residential projects between 2004 and 2008. However, none have been completed for a slew of reasons, including delay in getting approvals and dispute on land ownership among others, documents note. But this cannot be happening always metro had raised over Rs 700 crore in Phase I, exceeding its target. From Phase II, it could raise a little over Rs 200 crore, falling short of the target.

Kolkata Metro | State government send stop-work notice to Joka Metro

0

Calcutta: A day after chief minister Mamata Banerjee said vibrations caused by the construction cannot be ruled out as a possible trigger for the bridge collapse. The state government on Friday issued a stop-work notice to the Joka-Esplanade Metro project near Majerhat bridge.

“The ongoing work in and around the Majerhat bridge be temporarily suspended till further communications from our end in the interest of the investigation of the above mentioned case (the case filed by police in connection with the bridge collapse at Alipore police station),” reads a letter from Calcutta police sent to Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing agency for the Joka-Esplanade project.

RVNL had asked the contractor, Gammon India, to stop work, said by the railway officials.

On Tuesday the construction of Majerhat Metro station had been going on next to the bridge when it collapsed.

“On the matter of Majerhat bridge, the chief secretary (Moloy De) will take the opinion of technical experts. We are also speaking to engineers… the chief engineer of our PWD (public works department) has filed a report. The findings of the primary inquiry have been placed before the (inquiry) committee,” Mamata had said during a press conference at Nabanna on Thursday.

“S eta hochchhe Metro rail-er je kaaj hochchhe sei kajer jonyo onekta problem kintu ei bridge-er hoyechhe (It says that Metro rail construction is causing the bridge a lot of problems). The inquiry committee will verify the report…. Till then, temporarily we have asked for the Metro rail work to be stopped,” she had said.

Railway officials on Friday denied that construction of pillars had caused damage to the bridge but said they would stop work to cooperate with the police investigation. The stop-work notice would affect the entire project, they said.

The railways had been aiming to complete the 9km stretch between Joka and Majerhat by June 2021, spurred by an assurance from the Calcutta Municipal Corporation to help acquire land for the proposed maintenance depot in Joka. Construction of the remaining 6km stretch between Majerhat and Esplanade has yet to start.

Railway sources said construction work had not progressed in the past three days since the bridge collapsed because of traffic congestion in the area.

Metro had reported on Thursday how the supply of construction materials could be hit because of road diversions and snarls.

The officials said that the ban on entry of 20-wheel trucks would also have an effect on the project.

Kolkata Metro | Bridge collapse delay the metro work, more than a year

Kolkata: The Majerhat bridge collapse is likely to have an adverse impact on the ongoing 16.72km Joka-Esplanade Metro project by as much as one and a half years.
The Kolkata metro project has already suffered serious time and cost overruns because of encroachment and land issues.
Construction of Majerhat station and viaduct in front of the Alipore mint, which is in full swing, will get delayed as taking the material to the site will be an issue, with a major part of the site being cordoned off for dismantling the old structure and re-erecting a new one. According to a source in Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing agency of this project, work next to the spot where the portion of the bridge collapsed may have to be suspended for some days.

The Majerhat bridge collapse

Significantly, the elevated Majerhat Metro station is being constructed on a plot next to the collapsed Majerhat bridge. “We knew the Majerhat bridge is old and ailing and thus took all necessary precautions so that our piling work does not affect the structural stability of the bridge. But now the collapse becomes an impediment in itself,” said an RVNL officer.

“We don’t believe the collapse had anything to do with the Metro construction. The collapse was simply due to girder and slab failure. All our piling work was completed over a year ago. So, there is no possibility of any vibration now. Before any piling work is undertaken, it is ensured it doesn’t affect any nearby structure. There are several old structures nearby. None of those have been damaged until now. However, we are ready to face any inquiry. The only concern is that the timeline will be set back unless work resumes soon,” the source said

For RVNL, the zone had remained the biggest stumbling block, with successive impediments blocking its progress, said an RVNL officer.

The mint posed one of the biggest challenges to the Metro viaduct. The ministry of finance had not only objected to the viaduct’s construction in front of the building but had also directed that no station could be constructed within a kilometer on either side. This became a stumbling block, as the site of the Majerhat station is within 250m of the mint.
