Shared Autos soon to be ply near Metro, railway and bus stations

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): To address the city’s first-and last-mile connectivity woes, the government may allow shared autorickshaw services near mass transit stations.

“Allow shared autorickshaw services to and from mass transit stations to reduce vehicles and pool trips moving in the same direction,” read the recently released draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan, prepared by Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited along with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd and Directorate of Urban Land Transport.

So far, only BMTC holds exclusive stage-carriage permit rights in the city and has the right to pick up and drop passengers at multiple points. Most BMTC Metro feeder buses are incurring a loss.

The transport utility is also finding it difficult to operate buses through narrow stretches around areas like Chickpet Metro station. Shared autos are popular in cities like New Delhi, Chennai, and Jaipur, but the concept was opposed in Bengaluru by BMTC itself, fearing revenue loss.

However, many app-based aggregators operate car-pooling services like Ola Share, UberPool, Quick Ride, SRide, RideAlly, and BlaBlaCar.

In Bengaluru, shared autos illegally operate in some pockets like Byappanahalli Metro station, charging a minimum Rs 10 per passenger.

Daily wage workers depend on these services as they are affordable, have better frequency than BMTC buses and stop anywhere along the route. However, the safety of passengers ferried in crowded shared autos and security of women at night have been major concerns.

The draft CMP states urban parking policy should reserve spaces for shared mobility services in places like depots, terminals, and multimodal hubs. It also advocated shared mobility services that have the potential to shift people away from low-occupancy personal vehicles.

Metro Rail News December 2019 issue published

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Metro Rail News Published its Last Edition of the Year 2019. i.e December 2019 issue.

It gives me immense pleasure to announce that our year-end issue has been published. In view of automation and digitisation in Indian Railway.

The baby steps of digitalization have begun in railway but, we need to cover a lot of distance. Let’s take the example of REMMLOT remote monitoring. It’s a good step where the electrical data of the electrical machines is gathered from the locomotives. We also need to get the mechanical data in advance. For maintenance, if we already have the data on the wheel profile, rail profile, brake pads etc. we can take corrective action in a very accelerated manner. If you had to work on the wheel after certain kilometres or days, but with digitization you realise you can still run the system a few more thousand kilometres or a few more days. It can save your cost of maintenance.

Our monthly supplements are designed keeping in mind all the curiosity of the people who are looking for information and updates on Urban Transport Mobility. Readers will come across a mixture of news, features and regular columns on a wide range of Metro Rail Projects topics.

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): The stage is set for Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) and L&T Metro Rail to begin commercial operations on Corridor II (green corridor) of the metro rail project between Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS).

Following the trial runs which started on November 24 this year, on Tuesday, metro rail officials confirmed that passenger services on the route would commence by the end of January.

HMRL managing director NVS Reddy said, “Inspections by technical experts and engineers who have been conducting trial runs and tests to observe various critical parameters and performance have been going on for now and the operations will start by the end of January”.

The 11 km stretch via interchange station of Parade Grounds will provide better connectivity between JBS and Secunderabad stations and with the main stop at MGBS, it will make traveling easy for long-distance commuters as well. The entire stretch will be covered in 16 minutes as against the 38 to 40 minute-journey by road to cover the same distance.

Officials inspecting the stretch during the ongoing trial runs are testing technical specifications and safety standards such as degraded mode operation tests and dummy passenger evacuation tests etc. Emphasis is also being laid on safe train separation tests, signaling and train control system.

Reddy said, “Passenger operations will commence after the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) gives a final safety clearance which is the CMRS safety certification of the corridor”.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited managing director NVS Reddy delivered a speech to participants of the 36th Leadership Development Program of Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association and urged them to improve effectiveness in a leadership role.

Digging of another Metro tunnel In Pune to start in January

PUNE (Metro Rail News): In January, the officials are planning to start the second Metro tunnel work in January after inspecting the progress of the first one. The parts of the second tunnel boring machine (TBM) have arrived at the Metro site at Agriculture College.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) said, the assembling is underway and will take a few days more. After trials, the actual work of digging would begin.

Both TBMs will work from the Agriculture College-end towards the civil court. The first machine, after the initial trials, started the digging work last week. The MahaMetro said the progress of the tunnel boring had so far been satisfactory and no technical challenges were faced in the initial run.

MahaMetro further added that according to the plan, there will be separate tunnels for Up and Down lines. They will run parallel on the entire stretch from the Agriculture College to Swargate. The alignment of tunnels and underground Metro stations have been finalized. Four TBMs would be involved in the tunneling work.

A similar shaft is coming up at the Swargate-end to insert two more TBMs.

A senior official from MahaMetro said “We have expedited the shaft work at Swargate. It will be handed over for further stages soon,”.

The MahaMetro officials stressed that the project work was progressing according to the schedule. The manufacturing of casting rings to be inserted in the tunnel has been expedited. Over a thousand rings are ready at the casting plant. The officials stated that the tunneling work was complicated and involved a lot of technical monitoring.

“We are keeping an eye on all necessary parameters,” one among them said. The MahaMetro has also started the underground Metro stations’ work. The first stations in the underground Metro stretch from the Agriculture College-end are Shivajinagar and Civil Court. The initial work of the entry-exit points of both the stations has started.
