Mumbai Metro Gaining Pace – MMRDA begins pre-trial run

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Mumbai Metro’s much-awaited Dahisar – DN Nagar (Line 2A) and Andheri East – Dahisar East (Line 7) seems to start soon as MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) conducted the trial runs of their first train set on 25th of this month.

The train for trail runs developed by BEML Ltd. was received at Charkop Depot last month on 28th. The BEML supplied their first of six-car train set to MMRDA under their MRS1 contract of supply of 96 trains to the Development Authority.

The BEML engineers have already done the trials by splitting the six-car train into two units of 3 cars each. The smaller units are being prepared for energization and limited movement using hard-wired commands only.

In continuation with the developments, the first self powered movement of the train for  trail runs was conducted on Feb 16th & 17th. The three car train was energized for first time after testing its high voltage traction power systems including propulsion, equipments, brake systems and pantograph.

Encouraged with the results, the MMRDA did the dynamic low speed testing of the integrated six car train over a 520 metres of test track at Ckarkop depot which was flagged off by MMRDA Commissioner, RA Rajiv.

The MMRDA is now working on functionality of the trains on various subsystems like Vehicle Control Circuit (VCC), TCMS Control and Interfaces with different subsystems, propulsion fine-tuning with brake systems, Shore Supply Units, High Voltage, Auxillary Power Supply, Brakes & Pneumatics, Door System, Air Conditioning, Lightening, Announcement (Passenger) and Passenger Information System (PA-PIS) etc. to verify each sub-system individually. The integrated testing shall be done at the Charkop depot.

The testing as per MMRDA officials is about to take one month’s time after which the trail runs on the mainline shall also start once the connectivity to mainline is achieved. The MMRDA expects to commence the combined integrated testing of the train with signalling system after the second train set delivery which is expected in March by BEML. The entire trial runs is expected to be completed in next 4-5 months as per MMRDA, after which the commercial run on Mumbai Metro’s Line 2A and Line 7 can be started for Mumbaikers.

Ukraine to launch Lviv-Kharkiv high-speed rail project worth $1 billion

KYIV, UKRAINE (Metro Rail News): Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Krikliy on Monday said that the construction process will begin on the first part of a 2,000 kilometer network of high-speed railway tracks across Ukraine, reported Kyiv post.

The project envisages a speed of up to 250km/hr, accomplishing the journey in “three to four hours” once the network gets ready to use, said the President Volodymyr Zelensky during his opening remarks at the All-Ukrainian Forum Ukrainian 30.

Currently, Intercity high-speed trains take 14 hours to complete the 1,000-kilometer trip between Lviv and Kharkiv. The highest speed of such types of trains is 160 km/hr.

The initial step in this project will be to set-up a high-speed track of 80 km from the Polish border to western Lviv’s Sknyliv station, near the Lviv airport. This would pave the way for travel to and from Poland without adjournments at the border caused by the numerous gauge of European and Ukrainian railways.

Deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Oleg Zhuravlov, said that similar projects would cost $1 billion which Ukrzaliznytsia does not have.

“This project is absolutely realistic for Ukraine. But not without financing from the state and international investment,” added Zhuravlov.

He emphasised that this project is important for Ukraine.

Ukraine’s high-speed rail network would enable the trains operating between the Kyiv-Lviv-Polish border, from Kyiv to Odesa, between Kyiv and Kharkiv and along the Kyiv-Dnipro-Zaporizhia line.

“For the first time in 30 years, a sum of Hr 4 billion has been allocated from the state budget to improve passenger service, including 100 new train carriages, electrification, and a high-speed rail,” said the Infrastructure Minister Krikliy.

Much of Ukraine’s 40,000 kilometers of passenger and freight train railways have been dilapidated.

Transport comprises nearly 6% of Ukraine’s GDP.

Krikliy stated, “Improving infrastructure in several areas has a much greater multiplier effect than in one. That is why it is important to develop them.”

“Perhaps 2014 and the war would have never happened. When people communicate, when they are stitched together by railways, it is a completely different country,” Krikliy further said.

South Korea’s Hyundai Corporation plans to execute the project

Ukraine’s relationship with Hyundai has not been on good terms in the past.

Hyundai contemplates starting negotiations with South Korea’s government and multilateral lenders to gain financing in its hands for a major part of track construction and for 10 high speed trains, according to Eun Soo Choi, Hyundai’s vice president for commercial transport.

“We are ready to provide financing for several projects,” said Choi.

He added that Hyundai will set aside $2 million for a pre-feasibility study for the high-speed rail network.

In 2012, Ukraine procured 10 high-speed intercity electric trains manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, the South Korean company’s rolling stock manufacturing unit. Ukraine had spent $30 million for each train.

Post non-operations due to weather conditions in Ukraine, Ukraine’s state-owned railway monopoly Ukrzaliznytsia had taken off all high-speed intercity routes on the 10 Hyundai trains in February, 2014.

Hyundai had confronted the series of warnings regarding penalties from Ukrainian government and then paid for repairs and the high-speed trains restarted service by the end of the summer of 2014.

As of today, all 10 Hyundai Intercity high-speed trains run on three different routes.

Amidst all the chaos between each other, Ukraine’s government bought two high-speed trains from the Ukrainian company Kryukiv Trains, including them to the intercity train inventory.

Since 2012, these trains have been on track. However, without any market demand for them, they were unproductive until the purchase in 2014.

Lucknow Metro: Our Fight with Corona is still on

LUCKNOW (Metro Rail News): Lucknow metro is witnessing a steady rise in its ridership day by day, with passengers choosing this mode of travel over other modes of transport and ensuring their safety. Our ridership has crossed the 40 thousand mark and is continuously rising every passing hour. But knowing that our battle with Corona is not over yet, Lucknow Metro is fully committed towards ensuring the complete safety of its commuters by undertaking several sanitization measures and proper monitoring of all trains and stations. Ever since the pandemic hit Lucknow Metro operations, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Shri Kumar Keshav is strictly overseeing all sanitization measures and conducting regular inspections for Ticket counters, TVM Machines and Entry/Exit points in all metro stations.

Right from the entry point of the stations to ticket vending machines, escalators and lifts, regular cleaning with disinfectants is done after every two hours. Similarly, the entire metro train is sanitized with UV rays in the metro depot and only then brought to the mainline for commercial operations.

It is mandatory for every passenger to wear a face mask at all times, as soon as one enters the station premises. Also, they are required to record their body temperature near the baggage scanning area to assure the security staff of their health. All these measures are regularly monitored by UP Metro officials.

MD, UPMRC Shri Kumar Keshav has assured all metro commuters that Lucknow Metro is the safest mode of travel for the people of Lucknow who choose to travel by a public conveyance. He has also appealed to the passengers to prioritize their own safety amidst this corona dread and make sure that their surroundings are clean and hygienic.

MD Kumar Keshav has also assured that not just Lucknow Metro, but these measures are undertaken regularly in other ongoing Metro Projects in Uttar Pradesh, namely, Kanpur Metro Project and Agra Metro Project. All employees and commuters present in any of our Metro station premises are supposed to follow social distancing and strict wearing of face masks.

Since the corona pandemic breakout, there have been many technological inventions to meet the growing urgency of increased sanitization measures. The use of UV (ultraviolet) rays for complete sanitization and disinfection from viruses was one such excellent invention which was brought to use by Lucknow Metro, ensuring highest standards of hygiene for metro passengers.

After successfully experimenting this method of sanitizing the entire Metro coach by UV Rays in January 2021, Lucknow Metro has become the first Metro service in the country to use this technique. This is indeed a unique feat in itself, and Lucknow Metro is leaving no stone unturned to ensure utmost safety for its commuters.
