Detailed Feasibility Report for Madurai Metro to be prepared soon

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): While presenting the Revised Budget for the year 2021-2022, Finance Minister of the Tamil Nadu Government, Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan made an announcement that a detailed feasibility report for the Metro Rail in Madurai will be prepared.

The Finance Minister also announced that services on the Kodambakkam to Poonamallee bye pass section of the Chennai Metro Rail Project will be commenced within four years, by June, 2025 and the entire Metro Rail Project Phase 2 will be completed by December, 2026.

In parallel, this Government will speedily take up the extension of the Chennai metro Rail Project from Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus via Tambaram, he said.

Regarding Coimbatore Metro, the Finance Minister said that the establishment of a Metro Rail in Coimbatore will also be taken up at the earliest in consultation with the Union Government.

He also said that the State Government will urge the Union Government to accord early formal approval for equity participation in Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project as already committed in the Budget Speech of the Union Finance Minister, and the necessary counter part funding released at the earliest.

The work on Phase 2 of Chennai Metro project comprising three corridors for a total length of 118.9 km at an estimated cost of INR 61,843 Crores has been commenced.

Kodambakkam to Poonamallee section is a part of Corridor-4 under Phase 2 of Chennai Metro while Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus via Tambaram is an extension of already operational Blue Line under Phase-1 of Chennai Metro. This proposed 16 km extension will have 13 stations and will be constructed along GST Road as an elevated stretch.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The flagship company of the Godrej Group, Godrej & Boyce has recently made an announcement that that its business Godrej Tooling has partnered with the Indian Railways to design and develop the Universal Coach Assembly station. This station will cut the time taken to assemble a coach from 24 hours to 12 hours.

This Universal Coach Assembly station will work as an indigenous solution for Coach Assembly fabrication in the brand new Marathwada Railcoach Factory in Latur, Maharashtra.

As per the press release of Godrej, Godrej & Boyce’s partnership with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) began in 2019 with the latter awarding Godrej Tooling the project of developing with Universal Shell Body Assembly Fixture through their EPC contractor -M/s ISGEC for their upcoming Marathwada Railcoach Factory at Latur. This fixture greatly benefits the Indian Railways by deskilling operations, enhanced production, and a huge increase of 100% in the productivity of the line.

The integration of the auto welder setup makes it capable of welding different variants of coaches like EMU, MEMU and LHB type coaches through flexibility in Clamping, resting level pads and slides.

The key advantage for each coach consists of components like underframe, side walls, end walls and roof which are assembled, rigidly secured and clamped in the state of the art Universal Assembly station, and are then sequentially welded through a set of auto welders for seamless welding. This minimizes the human efforts, improves the welding quality and also reduces cycle time thus increasing line productivity.

According to the Senior Vice President and Business Head, Godrej Tooling, Pankaj Abhyankar, “With India’s commitment to advance its self-reliance across sectors gathering momentum, we are honoured to partner with the Indian Railways to further strengthen the railway network across the nation. Our team carried out extensive studies of the current manufacturing processes which included in-depth interactions with the factory personnel at the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. AHMEDABAD (METRO RAIL NEWS): Construction work has picked up the pace for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-1 which was progressing at snail’s pace due to the Covid-19 second wave since March.

Phase-1 of Ahmedabad Metro is expected to become fully operational by August 2022 as India celebrates its 75th Independence Day. Phase-1 consisting of two corridors has a total length of 40.03 km and work is only left for a section of the length of 6.36 km.

The two lines for this phase are the North-South corridor of length 18.87 km connecting APMC to Motera with 15 elevated stations and the East-west corridor of length 21.16 km connecting Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam with a total of 17 stations, out of which four are underground stations with an underground stretch of 6.53 km.

As reported by Ahmedabad Mirror, the most challenging work of building an underground station is nearing completion. The Metro will have four underground stations in the walled city area. The tunnelling work wherever necessary on the route is also progressing well.
This information was given to a parliamentary committee by Metro Rail Corporation in New Delhi on Thursday. The committee reviewed the status of the work of the project which was approved five years ago.

Standout sections like tunnelling in the underground sections, building a bridge over the Sabarmati railway yard and the Metro river bridge connecting eastern and western Ahmedabad are completed to a large extent. All train sets have been received and are ready for operations, the committee was informed.

According to Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the main objective of Metro rail is to provide Eco-friendly Mass Rapid Transport (EMRT) system to complement the existing public transport system so as to achieve a greater share of the public transport in commute and reduce congestion.

Civil construction work has already started for Phase-2 (28.25 km) of Ahmedabad Metro and is expected to be completed by March 2024. Phase-2 consist of 2 corridors i.e. Line-1 from Motera to Mahatma Mandir with a length of 22.838 km (20 stations) and Line-2 from GNLU to GIFT City with a length of 5.41 km (3 stations). Both the corridors are fully elevated.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Vice President of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Dr. D. J. Pandian, visited the headquarters of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) at Koyambedu on Tuesday and was given a short presentation on CMRL project and its facilities.

AIIB will partly finance Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro which has a total length of 26.1 km from Light House to Poonamallee with 28 stations. The corridor is partly elevated (16 km approx.) and partly underground (10 km approx.).

As per the press release of CMRL, the Managing Director of CMRL explained the present status of the ambitious CMRL Phase-II project especially the proposed AIIB funded civil elevated packages of Corridor 4 and balance of Corridor 5.

Dr. D. J. Pandian also visited the Operational Control Centre (OCC) of CMRL Depot at Koyambedu and undertook a Metro Train ride from Koyambedu Metro to Puratchi Thalaiavar Dr M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro Station.

Phase-2 of Chennai Metro comprises construction of three lines covering a total of 118.9 km with whole phase is expected to be completed by 2026. These three lines are –

Line-3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri (45.81 km with 48 stations)

Line-4 from Light House to Poonamallee (26.1 km, 28 stations)

Line-5 fromMadhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 km, 46 stations)

CMRL will operate a total of 112 driverless metro trains on these 3 lines. CMRL has recently invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for providing Rolling Stock of 42 train sets of 3 cars each on lease basis and also floated tenders to procure 70 driverless train sets of 3 cars each for Phase-2 of Chennai Metro.

NEW DELHI: (Metro Rail News) The proposed Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor will have a stoppage at Ayodhya which will immensely benefit devotees who plans to visit the Birth Place of Lord Ram. This will give a great boost to religious tourism in the region along with providing high-speed railway connectivity to the holy city of Ayodhya.

As per the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the final Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor will be ready by September next month and will subsequently be submitted to the Government for approval. After the approval from the government, land acquisition and construction work will be started at the ground level.

The proposed high-speed corridor will have a total of 12 stoppages including Ayodhya. The corridor will start from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and will terminate at Varanasi for a total length of 865 km with the given journey to be completed in less than four hours with trains operating at top speed of 300 km per hour.

The 12 stoppages on the route are Noida, Noida International Airport, Mathura, Agra, New Etawah, South Kannauj, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Raibareli, Prayagraj, New Bhadoi, and Varanasi. This corridor will be fully elevated.

The distance of 62 km from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Noida International Airport will be completed in 21 minutes, from Noida International Airport to Mathura in 20 minutes, from Delhi to Agra and Lucknow in 55 minutes and 2 hrs 50 minutes respectively with the complete journey from Delhi to Varanasi in 3 hrs 41 minutes.

Civil construction work on the corridor will be taken up in phases with Delhi to Agra work to be taken up in first phase followed by Agra to Lucknow in second phase, Lucknow to Prayagraj in third phase and Prayagraj to Varanasi in last phase.

Kanpur Metro making all efforts to start trial run from November

KANPUR (Metro Rail News): Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is making serious efforts to start a trial run on the 9 km long Priority Corridor running from IIT to Motijheel of Kanpur Metro Rail Project from November this year.

To carry out the trial run as per the deadline, UPMRC is ensuring the arrival of first Metro train set by September. Metro trains for the project are manufactured at Savli in Gujarat with the state of the art technology and standards.

To review the ongoing progress of manufacturing, UPMRC Managing Director, Kumar Keshav visited the Savli Plant in Gujarat on Tuesday. He reviewed the assembling and testing works of Metro trains for the project. Work is at the final stages and trains are expected to reach Kanpur by the end of September and trial run is expected by November.

According to Kumar Keshav, “Kanpur Metro trains are being manufactured with the most advanced and state-of-the-art technologies. The safety and comfort aspects of the passengers have been kept paramount in the designing of these trains. We are strictly abiding the deadline that we have decided for the trial run on the Priority Corridor and we are moving ahead with full zeal and dedication.”

Alstom will supply a total of 39 trains of 3 coaches each for both the corridors under Phase-1 of Kanpur Metro Rail Project. For the Priority Corridor, Kanpur Metro will get 8 trains. These trains have been designed with assistance from Bombardier Germany and design experts at Bombardier’s Hyderabad office.

These ‘Make in India’ Metro trains are equipped with Communication Based Train Control System (CBTC) for Automatic Train Operations. These ultramodern trains are having state of the art design for safe operation, energy efficiency and passenger comforts. These trains will also be equipped with CO2 sensor-based air-conditioning system to save energy during operations. As mentioned earlier, Phase-1 of Kanpur Metro Rail project will have two corridors. The first corridor (Red Line), with length 23.7 km, will have 22 metro stations and the second corridor (Blue Line), with length 8.6 km, will have 8 metro stations.

UPMRC Finishes Casting of All Piers of Priority Corridor of Kanpur Metro

UTTAR PRADESH (METRO RAIL NEWS): The first Pier of the corridor was constructed on the night of 31st December, 2019.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) has completed the construction of all the 513 Piers (Pillars) of the Priority Corridor of the Kanpur Metro Project i.e. being constructed between IIT & Motijheel. The civil construction of the Priority Section was commenced on 15th November 2019 and the casting of the very first Pier of the corridor near IIT was completed on the night of 31st December, 2019.

In addition, all the 624 U-girders of the Priority Corridor have been cast in the Lakhanpur Casting Yard. Out of these, 571 U-girders have already been erected on site.

Congratulating the team of Metro engineers on the rapid pace of civil construction, MD Shri Kumar Keshav said, “The civil construction works of the Priority section (IIT-Motijheel) are in the final stages and are about to be completed. We have constructed all the Piers and will soon finish the works of Pier Caps & U-girders. We are moving ahead in line with the aim of executing a trial run on the Priority Corridor in November this year. ”

Systra bags contract for Surat Metro Rail Project Phase-1

SURAT (Metro Rail News): Systra has won the contract for the execution of Surat Metro Rail Project Phase-1, on behalf of its client Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL).

The services to be provided by Systra for the project includes a review of the detailed project report (DPR), design review, procurement assistance for civil and system works along with construction supervision for civil and system works, system integration, overall project management, safety & quality check, testing and commissioning.

The project has received funding French Development Agency (AFD) and the German development bank KfW and is scheduled to be completed in 42 months. Systra Group is executing the project as the lead partner of the joint venture with AECOM Asia Company Limited and EGIS Rail SA.

Phase-1 of Surat Metro comprises the construction of two corridors for total length of 40.35 km with 38 stations. Corridor-1 comprises construction of 21.61 km long corridor from Sarthana to Dream City with 6 underground and 14 elevated stations while Corridor-2 comprises construction of 18.74 km long corridor from Bhesan to Saroli with 18 elevated stations.

At present, civil construction work is underway for the 11.6 km section from Dream City Depot to Kadarsha Ni Nal which will have 10 elevated stations and is a part of Corridor-1.

Systra is also working for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-1 as part of General Engineering Consultancy (GEC) contract for GMRCL which was inaugurated in March 2019. The project commenced in 2015 and is expected to be completed by next year.
