09-km, South India’s first Metro service has come a long way from its previously ridiculed ‘Toy Train’ status. Although project delays, cost overruns, the Covid-19 pandemic led to the complete closure of jobs. With the continuous efforts by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the Namma Metro over the past decade has made its way as a major public transport hub for the city.

Approximately 2.12 lakh passengers are currently travelling via metro per day compared to 5.26 lakh passengers in pre-Covid times. Half of the passengers on the Metro commuters expressed relief at the smooth ride and premium services offered by Namma metro. According to many commuters, “Metro has been a great help to the community”.

A comfortable atmosphere, travel and punctuality are some of the significant benefits. If a commuter assures someone that they will reach the destination at a particular time, it’s because of the realization that the metro will be consistent and punctual, unlike buses or any other transportation.

A source in the Bengaluru metro said that “A total of 60 passengers have travelled via metro since its inception. The revenue stand at 1282.6 crore so far when it comes to box tickets. The metro rail ridership was expected to be between 8 lakh and 9 lakh a day. Although the numbers right now are much less than we expected, but as offices and educational institutions open with an increase of the confidence of the public, it will have an effect on the ridership too,” he added.

The source from BMRCL said fare collection ranged from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 55 lakh per day while operating costs per day were between Rs 95 lakh and Rs 1 crore. “We are losing Rs 40 to Rs 45 lakh every day right now,” he said. It has given a lot of impetus to the connection between Metro and BMTC, KSRTC and the railway line without providing end-to-end and first-mile connections.

80 crore, and under this, a 31.55 KMs high railway line will be built in the city.

Flash Butt Welding for Reach II and IV tracks completed for Nagpur Metro Project

MAHARASHTRA, INDIA (Metro Rail News): Maha Metro has completed flash butt welding (FBW) for the track being laid on Reach II (Sitabuldi to Automotive Square) and Reach IV (Sitabuldi to Prajapati Nagar). The organization mostly did FBW as these welds are stronger than other ones.

Rails used in Nagpur Metro Rail Project (NMRP) are generally of length 18 meters and 25 meters. The individual rails are welded together to form long-welded panels of various lengths according to the alignment of the track.

Rail welding is generally done by two methods:

Flash butt welding (FBW): These welds have 95% strength of their parent rails as the metallurgy of rail is not changed during this process. This process is adopted for making long weld rail (LWR) panels before casting track plinths.

Aluminium thermit welding (ATW): The process involves pouring molten iron metal between two rail panels, where a gap of 25 millimeters is left. The metal acts as the glue between parent rails.

This process is generally adopted to convert long weld rail (LWR) panels into continuous weld rail (CWR) panels after track laying work is finished. These welds have 45% strength of parent rails as external material is poured between rails.

In Nagpur Metro, 18 meter and 25-meter rails have been welded to form an LWR panel of an average length of 350 meters. The longest rail panel made at NMRP is of length 600 meters with twenty-four 25 meter long rails.

In Reach II and IV, a total of 3,064 flash butt welds has been done to complete 100% rail panels in the month of October. The use of ATW is only 10% of FBW in Nagpur Metro. This has been done so that the track has maximum strength.

NEW DELHI, INDIA (Metro Rail News): National Capital Region Transportation Corporation NCRTC has released the implementation status as of October 2021 of the corridor. The organization with the full support of its engineers, stakeholders and contractors is working day in and day out to deliver India’s first high-speed transit system for the people of Delhi-NCR. The corridor is at a stretch of 82 kms starting from Sarai Kale Khan to Begumpul Station. As many as 25 stations are being constructed for the corridor.
