Kanpur Metro's Second Tunnel Breakthrough Successfully Completed in Corridor-1

KANPUR (Metro Rail News): Under Corridor-1 (IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta) of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, the tunnelling work of the underground section from Chunniganj to Nayaganj is currently in progress. Kanpur Metro successfully conducted a second tunnel breakthrough in this section on January 16 and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Tatya‘ reached Nayaganj after constructing 1005 meter long tunnel from Bada Chauraha. The ‘Tatya’ TBM was launched in August 2022 from Bada Chauraha.

Earlier, ‘Nana’ TBM, which was constructing a tunnel in this section, reached Nayaganj from Bada Chauraha on December 6, 2022, after completing the construction of the downline tunnel.

So far ‘Tatya’ Tunnel Boring Machine has erected 718 rings while arriving at the retrieval shaft at Nayaganj. However, seven more rings will be erected until the TBM machine is retrieved from the retrieval shaft.

The tunnel was built passing under the city’s busiest areas, which also had many old buildings, which is an excellent achievement in itself. In this way, the tunnel construction work of both the ‘upline’ and ‘downline’ tunnels between Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj is complete.

‘Tatya’ will now be retrieved from the retrieval shaft built at Phoolbagh-Nayaganj metro station. The ‘Nana’ TBM, which completed tunnel construction in December, has already been retrieved from the retrieval shaft. Soon both these machines will be launched from the launching shaft made in Chunniganj, and these TBMs will construct a tunnel to Bada Chauraha via Naveen Market.

Mr. Sushil Kumar, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, said, “This breakthrough by Tatya TBM is a very proud moment for us. TBMs’ Nana’ and ‘Tatya’ lead us to fulfil the dream of a world-class metro system in Kanpur.

The route between Chunniganj and Nayaganj is one of the busiest routes in the city. With the help of these state-of-the-art TBMs, we have constructed underground tunnels passing through the city’s heart with complete safety without affecting the traffic on the roads.

The civil construction work on Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section and Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section of the first corridor is progressing quickly. It is my firm belief that our team, with their dedication and commitment, will be able to achieve the set goals in the stipulated time in the future as well.”

This is a new invitation for tenders for the depot. Its initial call for tender was issued in August 2020 with a 36-month timeline and an estimated construction cost of Rs. 596.60 crores. However, that tender was cancelled in May 2021 after MMRDA had continuously pushed back its submission deadline via 14 amendments. The latest tender documents show that the layout of the depot has been drastically changed, reducing its area from 41 to 35 hectares. The contract period remains the same at 36 months, but the estimated cost has increased to Rs. 711.34 crores.

Bidders are :

  • NCC Ltd.

Its current plan will incorporate 16 stabling lines (SBLs) for 32 trains, whereas 16 more SBLs are expected to be added in the future. In addition, the depot will have five inspection bay lines (IBL), with another five sets to be added in due course.

The bids for technical evaluation have been submitted, which will take a few months to finish. After that, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be exposed to reveal the least expensive bidder and potential contractor.

The depot is originally designed to house 39 x 6 trains (in addition to additional trains for Line-10 & Line-11 in the future). In March 2021, an Rs. 1853.28 crore contract was awarded to Bombardier (which was acquired by Alstom Transport) for those trains; however, they withdrew in February 2022 due to delays in the progress of the line’s civil work. As a result, a new tender notice for these trains is pending.

So if you plan on using the Noida-Greater Noida Metro beyond next week, you should ensure your metro card has the required minimum recharge.

Uncertainty Lingers Around Proposed Monorail Project in Hyderabad

1
monorail
monorail/ Representational Image

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): The Telangana government is now concentrating on the Hyderabad Airport Metro Express, there is still some mystery around the opening of the projected monorail project in Hyderabad.

The government previously established a task team to investigate the viability of the Hyderabad monorail project. The task committee included representatives from the public and private sectors.

The task of identifying cost-effective modes of transportation, such as trams and monorails, was handed to the group. It was also intended to provide financing recommendations.

There is still anxiety around the Hyderabad monorail project because no significant progress has been achieved in its debut.

Unlike metro rail, which has two tracks, a monorail only has one rail per track. The monorail is a less expensive choice than the metro rail since it occupies less area.

It not only offers a different kind of transportation, but it also facilitates last-mile connection. Moreover, the monorail can be built in fewer areas; therefore, it may be installed in various locations around Hyderabad.

Chandrashekar Rao, the chief minister of Telangana, laid the foundation stone for the Hyderabad Airport Express Metro last year.

The project will provide public transit to southern Hyderabad in addition to acting as a crucial link between the Aerocity in Adibatla and the intended Pharma City.

A particular purpose entity called Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) was established for the 31-kilometre Airport Metro line. It is a collaborative venture between Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).
