PM Modi Shows Green Light to 3 Vande Bharat Express: UP, Tamil Nadu & Karnataka 

Metro Rail News: On 31st August 2024, PM Narendra Modi flagged off three new Vande Bharat Express via video conferencing to enhance connectivity in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. 

Recently, inaugurated three Vande Bharat Express trains are:

  • Chennai Central to Nagercoil
  •  Madurai to Bengaluru Cantonment
  •  Meerut City-Lucknow

While adding three more Vande Bharat trains, the Prime Minister welcomes more connectivity to the route. More than 100 Vande Bharat Trains are operational, connecting 280 districts.

 Will facilitate pilgrimage travelling to the divine Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai & Kumari Amman Temple, Kanniyakumari.

From Madurai to Bengaluru Cantonment It will leave Madurai at 5:15 AM  and reach Bengaluru Cantonment at 1 PM.Will remain off on Tuesdays.Dindugal, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, and Krishnarajapuram Connect inter-state with providing connectivity to the temple in Madurai.
  1.  Meerut City to Lucknow Vande Bharat trains

From Meerut city to Lucknow It will leave Meerut City at 6:35 am and reach Lucknow Charbagh at 1:45 pm. It will remain off on Tuesdays.Moradabad and Bareilly.This will connect pilgrimage sites like Digambar Jain Temple, Mansa Devi Mandir, Surajkund Temple, and Augharnath Temple.

While inaugurating, PM Modi said, “Today, from North to South, a new chapter is being added to the Vikas Yatra of the country. From today, Vande Bharat Train service will start between Meerut – Lucknow, Madurai – Bengaluru Cantonment and Chennai – Nagercoil. 

Surat Metro- TBM Narmada Completes Its Third Drive 

Surat (Metro Rail News):Surat Metro project advances as TBM Narmada accomplishes Its last Breakthrough.

On 30 August 2024, Surat Metro witnessed another milestone on Line 1 when Gulermak – Sam India Builtwell JV’s TBM Narmada achieved its third and final breakthrough at Surat Railway Station for the Surat Metro Phase 1 Project.

TBM Narmada established the overall fifth and second-last breakthrough for Package CS2 / UG1.

Package CS2 / UG1

In March 2021, Gulermak – Sam India JV grabbed underground Package CS2 / UG1’s construction contract, which spans 3.46 km connecting Kapodra station and Surat Railway Station. 

The scope of work under this package incorporates the construction of three twin tunnels and the 3 stations at ;

  • Kapodra
  •  Labheshwar Chowk
  •  Central Warehouse 

Surat Metro Phase 1 Project

Surat metro is an under construction Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) which spans 41.93 km, consisting of  2 corridors and 37 stations. 

Line 1 Sarthana station – Dream City station 22.77 km Total no. of stations: 20 

Line 2 
Bhesan station – Saroli station 19.26 km.Total  no. of stations:  18 

11 Firms Bid for Geotechnical Work on Mumbai Metro’s Line 11

Mumbai (Metro Rail News):  Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) has revealed that 11 bidders have signed up to conduct a geotechnical soil investigation for 18 km Mumbai Metro Line 11( Green Line ), which will connect Anik Bus Depot- SPM Chowk featuring 15 underground stations.

Beforehand, MMRCL had invited bids for geotechnical work on the new alignment of Line 11. The deadline for the project is 90 days. This line will be the third underground line after Line 3 (Aqua Line) and Line 7 (Red Line).

 The lowest bidder has yet to be announced, and bids have been sent for technical evaluation.

Objective For Geotechnical Contract 

This geotechnical investigation aims to collect sufficient data on the sub-soil that will help to prepare detailed structure designs and the use of appropriate machinery, methods & technology during construction. This will also help ensure the least possible damage to existing structures during construction.

Work Description: The contract involves a geotechnical investigation of the new alignment of Mumbai Metro line 11. 

The report of the geotechnical survey should contain the following details:

  • Borehole details and locations with georeferenced coordinates
  • Geological characteristics of the area
  • Water table levels
  • Results of conducted tests
  • Foundation recommendations based on borehole data
  • Cut off values
  • Bearing capacities of Soil
  • Seismicity of the soil

According to the contract details, boreholes with 150 mm diameter should be drilled periodically after every 500 meters along the twin tunnel alignment. A total of 3 boreholes will be drilled at each station site. The depth of these boreholes will vary from 10 meters to 20 meters.

On corridor 11, 15 underground stations are planned to be constructed on Anik Bus Depot, Wadala Depot, CGS Colony, Ganesh Nagar, BPT Hospital, Sewri, Hay Bunder, Coal Bunder (Darukhana), Reay Road, Byculla, Nagpada Junction, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, CSMT Metro, Horniman Circle, and SPM Circle.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is responsible for the development of Green Line. The Green Line includes four lines( Line 4, Line 4A, Line 10, and Line 11).In 2023, the first section of the Green Line will be opened and connected with other metro lines through multiple interchanges along its route.

Agra Metro Advances with 2 TBM Breakthroughs on Line 1 

Agra (Metro Rail News): Recently, the Agra Metro Phase 1 project witnessed 2 milestones on Line 1 when  Afcons-Sam India Consortium’s TBM Ganga and TBM Shivaji achieved breakthroughs at SN Medical College Station and Raja Ki Mandi, respectively.

TBM 324 and TBM S718C established the 13th and 14th breakthroughs for the 7.93 km underground Package AGCC-02 of Agra Metro Phase 1.

Upcoming Developments 

Till date,14 breakthroughs have been achieved out of 18 breakthroughs planned for the Agra Metro Phase 1 project.

In future, The remaining breakthroughs will be recorded at: 

  • 2 breakthroughs at Agra College 
  • 2 breakthrough at Mankameshwar (Jama Masjid) 

Chennai Metro’s TBM S81B Achieves Breakthrough at Otteri Station

Chennai ( Metro Rail News): Another day, another achievement. TBM S81 B with the nickname Kolli, commissioned by Tata Projects Ltd. recorded a breakthrough at Otteri station of Line 3 in 116.1km Chennai Metro Phase 2.

In July 2023, Tata Projects deployed TBM (Kolli ) on the south shaft of Ayanavaram Station of the 45.8km Line 3 ( Mandharam station – Siruseri SIPCOT ). After covering a distance of about 903 m TBM Kolli reached Otteri station in just 13 months.

TBM S18 B ( Kolli) 

Kolli is a Terratec Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine with 06.61 km. During the excavation, the machine encountered more than 100 bore wells and to avoid any inconvenience it took two sharp curves of radius 220 m and 280 m respectively.

After its first breakthrough in the Pune metro, In December 2022, TBM S18 passed the FAT   (Factory Acceptance Test ) before being deployed in the Chennai Metro Phase 2.

Scope Of Work  

This assignment of Tbm Kolli falls under Package TU-01.  In May 2021, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) awarded Tata Projects with Package TU-01  with a 42-month deadline. The total cost of the project is Rs 1999 crore. Package TU-01 is a 9 km long section on Line 3 of Chennai metro Phase 2.

The work scope of TBM Kolli and 6 other TBMs under Package TU-01 includes the construction of a 9 km twin tunnel (totalling 18 km) from the TBM retrieval shaft near Venugopal (line 5) to Kelly station (Line 3) and the construction of diaphragm walls and entry and exit structures of Madhavaram Milk Colony Station, Murari Hospital Station, Ayanavaram Station and Purasaiwakkam High Road Station.

5 Firms Bid For Thane Metro’s DDC-01 Package 

Thane (Metro Rail News): On 29 August, after the opening of technical bids, MMRCL revealed the names of 5 Firms that have submitted bids for Thane Metro’s first Detailed Design Consultant (DDC-01) contract. 

In early August, Maha-Metro floated tenders for this contract with an estimated budget of Rs 3.82 crore and a 36-month deadline.

The appointed contractor under this package will be responsible for providing Detailed Design Consultancy Services for Thane Metro’s 6 elevated stations:

Thane Metro Project

Thane Metro, also referred as the Thane Integral Metro Project, has recently received approval from the Central Government’s Cabinet with an estimated total budget of Rs. 12,200 crore and a 2029 deadline. 

Thane Metro will consist of a single corridor. The elevated route will span 26 km with 22 stations and a 3km underground twin tunnel section with 2 underground stations. 

The Process Ahead

The Bids would go through a technical evaluation. Subsequently, MMRCL will reveal the financial bids of technically qualified bidders to identify the L1 (Lowest Bidder) for this Package.

MPMRCL MD Inspects Indore Metro from SC-03 to Gandhi Nagar Depot 

Indore (METRO RAIL NEWS): Shri S. Krishna Chaitanya, IAS, Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Indore Metro Super Priority Corridor from the SC-03 station to the Gandhi Nagar Depot by metro train. The Managing Director also inspected the underground route.

During the site inspection, the Managing Director reviewed the progress and intricate aspects of various components constructed for train operations at SC-03, SC-04, SC-05, SC-06 stations, and Gandhi Nagar station, including the station control room, ticket office machine room, signalling equipment room, and telecom equipment room.

Following the inspection, the Managing Director conducted a review meeting with all stakeholders at the metro office to assess the current progress and achievements against the set targets.

Guidelines For Contractors of Indore Metro Project

  • The Managing Director instructed the project contractors to ensure a proper drainage system at the depot.
  • To complete the entry and exit points of the stations as soon as possible.
  • He urged all metro project officials, general consultant representatives, and contractors to contribute their best efforts to bring the metro project to fruition, enabling the metro service to be made available to the public at the earliest.
  • He also emphasised removing the unnecessary barricades and reconstructing the roads to smoothen the traffic near the metro construction site
  • He instructed that the system work at these stations be completed promptly.
  • He explained the dependency of the depot station in the operation of the metro train.

Inspection’s Reviews 

During his first inspection of the Indore Project, the Managing Director expressed satisfaction with the work done so far and reiterated the commitment to a safe, seamless, and environmentally friendly metro that aligns with public aspirations.

Kanpur Metro: TBM Vidyarthi Starts its 2nd Drive Towards Transport Nagar Station

Kanpur (Metro Rail News): On 28 August 2024, Afcons-Sam India Consortium deployed TBM S- 639B (Vidyarthi) for its second assignment from Transport Nagar Ramp to Transport Nagar Metro Station on Line 1 under Package KNPCC-06 of the Kanpur Metro Phase 1 Project.

For its current assignment, TBM S-639B will construct an approximate 350 m-long tunnel for the downline towards Transport Nagar Metro Station.

TBM Vidyarthi’s Journey in Kanpur Metro

In December 2023, TBM S-639B, nicknamed Vidyarthi, started its journey as the fourth TBM deployed to facilitate the construction of twin tunnels on Line-1, which spans 23.78km between IIT Kanpur and Naubasta.

TBM S-639B began its first drive from Kanpur Central Station, covering a 1250m long distance in 6 months; TBM achieved a breakthrough at Nayaganj Station in June 2024.

Till date, Afcons – Sam India has achieved 2 out of 8 breakthroughs – both were recorded at Nayaganj Station in March and June 2024.

KNPCC-06 Package 

In March 2022, Afcon Sam India Consortium bagged package KNPCC-06 at Rs. 1087.67 crore with a 36-month deadline.  

KNPCC-06 is a 2nd underground package for the Kanpur Metro Line-1. This Package will connect Nayaganj Station and Transport Nagar Ramp through 3 underground stations at 

  • Kanpur Central
  • Jhakarkatti
  • Transport Nagar

Future Prospects

Once TBM S-639B achieves a breakthrough at Transport Nagar Station, it will be moved from its station box to construct tunnels at Jhakarkatti Station.

Shri Satish Kumar Becomes Chairman & CEO of the Railway Board

Delhi (Metro Rail News): On 27 August 2024, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet promoted Shri Satish Kumar, Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Railway Board, to the post of Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board.

In the history of the Railway Board, Shri Kumar, an IRSME officer from the 1986 batch, will be the first person from the Scheduled Castes to be appointed as Chairman and CEO. His new role will come into effect from 1 September. He will succeed Ms. Jaya Varma Sinha, the first female to serve as Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board

As per a government official, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Shri Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Railway Board to the post of Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board”.

Shri Kumar brings over three decades of experience to his new role. His journey in Indian Railways began in March 1988, and he has served in various roles across multiple railway zones and divisions. 

His roles included positions in the Jhansi Division of the former Central Railway and at the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi. Additionally, he served as the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Lucknow Division under Northern Railway from April 2017 to April 2019. Prior to joining the Railway Board, Shri Kumar also served as the General Manager of North Central Railway in Prayagraj.

Shri Kumar’s expertise and ideas will be invaluable assets to the organization.

Chennai (Metro Rail News): Tata Projects Ltd. recommissioned TBM S98 for the third time at Purasaiwakkam metro station towards Kelly station of 45.8 km Line-3 ( Madhavaram- Siruseri) of Chennai Metro Phase 2.
