Nagpur: The popularity of Nagpur as centre of the country is not only there on the geography, but also in the heart of the country from various points of view, such as, it is multicultural metro; its people are peace loving; it is famous for oranges; it is cross-route for Indian railways, for the trains to all four geographical directions pass through it and all surface transportation is done through Nagpur. And now, it has become a transportation hub of the country due to its all season large roads. More over the city receives maximum sun-shine as a natural source of energy.Soon, the city will also get its first Metro, which is expected to carry 3.5 lakh passengers by 2020. A Rupees 8,680-crore worth project consisting of 40-km elevated Metro rail is being constructed at a rapid pace by Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (NMRCL), and it is said to be complete by year 2018.The Managing Director of NMRCL Brijesh Dixit, a veteran of Indian Railways Service of Engineers, believes that the project can deliver on time as it is built on cash contracts model and not the BOT model. The following are the excerpts of what all he said:Q: Are your sure that Metro rail would be in operation by year 2018?A: For a Metro rail project, funding and land acquisition are two most important elements, which the NMRCL team has managed to achieve through successful tie-up. More than 80 per cent of project land is in possession and construction work has already commenced for car depots and a 12-km rail section. Nagpur has huge roads as the city serves as a national transportation hub. The elevated Metro rail corridor will be constructed on the road medians, which are sufficiently wide. Construction on the medians does not pose any right of way problems.A number of multilateral funding agencies, including KFW of Germany and AFD of France, have shown interest in providing Rs 4,521 crore as debt. By December, the debt would also be granted for the project. Rest of the money would be in the form of equity from the Centre and the Maharashtra government. A budgetary grant of ₹500 crore has already been processed. With land and money in place, operating the project by 2018 would not pose any problems.Q: Will there be modern and international level features in the project? Or you will go by conventional way.A: In conventional construction methods, if a particular station gets delayed, the whole line gets stalled. The experience in other Metro projects such as Bengaluru and Chennai has proved that delays in Metro station construction are a setback to the whole project.However, in Nagpur Metro project, construction of the corridor will be independent of the stations. A viaduct has been incorporated in the design, which will allow commissioning of the whole line with only three functional stations.For the line to operate, two terminal stations and a midway station is required. Nagpur Metro would be the first Metro in the country to use this innovate feature.Q: What is the revenue prospective from the project? A: The revenue of the Metro would not be fully dependent on fare collection from passengers. A new revenue generating method called transit oriented development (TOD) has been used in the project. Under the TOD, the density of the population staying along the Metro corridor would be allowed to increase. It would be achieved by increasing the FSI limit, 500 metres on either side of the corridor.The income generated from the sale of higher FSI would be shared between NMRCL and civic bodies of Nagpur. A State government notification to this effect has already been issued.The stamp duty in Nagpur municipal area has also been increased by 1 per cent. This additional income would be directly credited to NMRCL.Q: Will your project be based on electricity energy resource or some alternative resource of energy?A: Nagpur is a city blessed with a lot of sunshine; in summer, the temperature reaches 45-47 degrees. It is a great discomfort to work in the city during summer. We want to convert this discomfort into an opportunity by incorporating solar power panels in the very design of the project. From the panels, about 14 MW of power would be generated, which would account for 65 per cent of the requirement of the project. It will give long-term energy security for the project and protect it from increasing power tariffs.
Kanpur Metro| IIT-Kanpur to get metro rail connectivity
Lucknow: The premier Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K), on the outskirts of Kanpur City, would soon be connected to modern metro rail system.Its cost estimated at over Rs 13,700 crore, the Kanpur Metro Rail project would be the second metro rail project in Uttar Pradesh to be completed if things roll out as planned.While, the Lucknow Metro Rail projects is already underway and is projected to start trial runs for phase I by December 2016, the detailed project report (DPR) of the proposed Kanpur Metro Rail has also been prepared.The state government is hoping that the work on Kanpur Metro could start as early as January 2016.According to DPR, the Kanpur Metro would run on standard gauge track and have a Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic (PHPDT) of 16,800 passengers by 2021 for the 23.785 km long IIT Kanpur to Naubasta.The two corridors of Kanpur Metro Rail have been estimated to run about 32 km. The first corridor that spreads from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta covers almost 24 km with an elevated stretch of about 15 km and an underground stretch of a little under 9 km.The second corridor consisting of 8.6 km length from Agriculture University to Barra covers an elevated section of 4.19 km and an underground section of 4.41 km.

The DPR of Kanpur Metro Rail project was presented formally to the state chief secretary Alok Ranjan by RITES and Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) here recently.A total of 22 metro stations have been planned (14 elevated; 8 underground) for the IIT Kanpur to Naubasta corridor, while 9 stations have been proposed for the Agriculture University to Barra corridor.Earlier, UP had appointed LMRC as coordinator for preparation of DPR for Metro in four cities viz. Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut and Agra, while RITES, a central government undertaking, was engaged for preparing DPRs.The estimated cost for the IIT Kanpur to Naubasta corridor stands at Rs 9, 840 crore at August 2015 prices (including taxes and duties), while the estimated cost for the Agriculture University to Barra corridor comes to Rs 3, 881 crore.

New Delhi: On Diwali day, the last train from all terminal stations across the Delhi Metro network would leave at 10 pm, an hour ahead of the usual time, DMRC said today.A metro official said that until 2013, services used to come to a halt even earlier, as the last train would leave stations by 8 pm.The services will terminate after the last train at 10 pm reaches its destination station on all the six lines of the metro including the Airport Express Line.Metro’s terminal stations are Dilshad Garden, Rithala, Samaypur Badli, Huda City Centre, Noida City Centre, Dwarka Sector-21, Vaishali, Kirti Nagar, Inderlok, Mundka, Central Secretariat and Escorts Mujesar.New Delhi and Dwarka Sec-21 are the terminal stations of the premium Airport Express Line, that connects New Delhi railway station to Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport.Metro train services will run as usual for rest of the day on Diwali from 6:00 am onwards on all lines and from 4:45 am on the Airport Express Line.

New Delhi: The Jahangirpuri – Samaypur Badli Metro corridor of the Delhi Metro was formally flagged off for passenger services today by the Union Minister of Urban Development, Sh. M. Venkaiah Naidu and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sh. Arvind Kejriwal.The 4.373 km long elevated corridor will be an extension of the already operational Yellow Line from HUDA City Centre to Jahangirpuri. Close to 29,000 additional commuters are expected to use this new section comprising of three new stations.Speaking on the occasion, Sh. Naidu complimented DMRC for finishing the project on time and said that other organisations should also follow Delhi Metro’s example. He also appreciated DMRC for taking various environment friendly measures such as the installation of roof top solar power panels at the stations as well as the provision for rain water harvesting.The Chief Minister of Delhi, Sh. Arvind Kejriwal said that DMRC has shown that government agencies can also work efficiently and complete their projects within schedule. He congratulated the Delhi Metro officials for presenting the people with a clean and efficient transport system.Going back to cars should not be allowed. I will be suggesting to DMRC and also hold a review meeting with them. They will be going for additional coaches and increasing the frequency as well so that more coaches and more trips are there and people can be accommodated,” Naidu said.Earlier, Kejriwal flagged the issue of overcrowding of metro coaches saying it was compelling a section to opt for other means of transport including private vehicles which, he said, was “not a good thing”.“Crowd is going up every year resulting in a major section preferring other means over metro. But the real success of metro is achieved when a person takes metro over car. Middle class and even upper middle class had started using the metro.“But due to the crowd, metro is no longer comfortable. It is turning into locals of Mumbai where you are pushed in and out of coaches by the crowd,” Kejriwal said.Delhi Metro’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh informed that with the opening of this section, Delhi Metro had commissioned 22 kms out of the 159 kilometres being constructed as part of Phase 3.The occasion was also attended by Member of Parliament, Dr. Udit Raj, MLAs Sh. Vijender Gupta and Sh. Ajesh Yadav, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Sh. D.S Mishra and Delhi’s Chief Secretary, Sh. New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has hit rough waters with its employees resorting to protests once again. The protesting non-executive employees of the corporation have now begun a hunger strike as they claim their demands for salary restructuring are going unheard by the administration.
As many as 3,600 employees, mainly technicians, are taking turns to protest at Jantar Mantar and at the seven metro depots. They are not ruling out train services being affected as 32 of those on hunger strike have already been hospitalized. Members of the staff council are likely to meet the administration on Monday to reach a common consensus.
The demand letter, a copy of which is with the Metro Rail News , states that the salaries of technicians be revised from Rs 8,000 – 14,140 to Rs 10,170 – 18,500. For senior technicians, they have demanded a hike in pay-scale from Rs 10,170 – 18,500 to Rs 14,000 – 26,950 and for head technicians from Rs 14,000 – 26,950 to Rs 16,000 – 30,770.
According to General Secretary, DMRC Employees Union, Kuldeep Maan, the employees fear that once the Seventh Pay Commission is implemented, their problems with the corporation would be quashed. “We have been victims of DMRC’s exploitation since 2007. Our protest has been on for long now but nothing has happened. On November 3, we decided to extend the protest to Jantar Mantar and November 5 onwards employees began their hunger strike,” he said.
To register his protest for the cause Kishan went a step ahead and resigned from his membership of the employees’ council. “So far, 40 of the many employees on hunger strike have been hospitalised. If the administration does now blink an eye many more will be taken ill and then we won’t be responsible if metro operations are hit,” said another protesting member. The administration had called for a meeting once, but it bore no fruitful conclusions, he added.
Responding to the report, the DMRC said, “It is an internal matter of the organization and the Human Resource department has taken up the issues of these employees.”
Further, the metro staffs on hunger strike said media that they will stop metro rail operation in the Delhi at any time if their demands does not met.
Kolkata Metro|Metro to get new-generation rakes by July 2016
Kolkata: Metro Railway will receive its first pair of state-of-the-art air-conditioned rakes by July, 2016. These rakes are being built by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai as per standards set by the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO). With the arrival of these two, the Kolkata metro will have 16 AC rakes in its fleet apart from 13 non-AC ones. By the end of 2018, the metro is likely to receive 14 more AC rakes for which an order has been placed with CNR Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co Ltd in China“The two rakes being built by ICF now are much more advanced than those in service. They will have 3-phase alternating current motors and features like regenerative braking for substantial energy saving, stainless steel body, disc brakes, better passenger information system and CCTV for passenger security. The existing AC rakes with the metro were also supplied by ICF but the new design is a challenge. With metros coming up in several cities in the country, there will be a high demand for rakes. If advanced rakes can be built in India, there will month longer be any need to import them,” a metro official said.The Kolkata metro is different from those in other cities. This is the only metro network that depends entirely on an electrified third rail rather than overhead equipment (OHE). When the Kolkata metro was designed more than 30 years ago, technology hadn’t evolved sufficiently to dig tunnels large enough to accomodate OHE. The third rail was the only option. Today, when most metros draw power from the OHE, few rake manufacturers have retained the technology to build rakes that draw power from a third rail. As the north-south corridor of Metro Railway is third-rail dependent, all ongoing projects in Kolkata (save for the E-W Metro) will use the same technology for integration.“We will need many more rakes as and when the ongoing projects are completed. Take the Kavi Subhas-Airport (via Rajarhat) link. This will form a circular link with the N-S corridor once the stretch between Noapara and the airport is completed. Once the integration happens, demand for rakes will go up. Units like ICF are gearing up for this. Within the next few years as the ongoing projects get completed, one would get to see more advanced rakes in the network,” the official added.

Lucknow: The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Kanpur Metro Rail Project will formally be presented to the State Government tomorrow. It will be presented by M/s RITES to Shri Alok Ranjan, Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh, in the presence of Shri Sadakant, Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Planning, Government of Uttar Pradesh and Shri Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC). Commissioner Kanpur , Vice Chairman and other senior officers of Kanpur Development Authority shall also be present during the function.State Government has assigned Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) the responsibility of ‘Coordinator’ for preparation of DPR for Metro in four important cities of Uttar Pradesh namely Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut and Agra. For this purpose M/s RITES, a Govt of India Undertaking, had been engaged by the State Government for preparing the DPRs. Work on preparation of DPR for Metro in Kanpur was commenced in March, 2015. Extensive meetings were held at the LMRC level and Lucknow Metro provided the much required technical assistance during the preparation of the DPR.Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) is the nodal agency for preparation of this DPR for Kanpur Metro. Nagpur Metro|Poor cash flow may delay Metro Rail project by a few months
Nagpur: The city’s ambitious metro rail project is likely to be delayed. The central and state governments have released meagre funds for the project despite passage of seven months. Unfortunately, the state headed by city’s own Devendra Fadnavis has released only 0.25% of total allocated funds, forcing Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) to start pursuing the matter with concern. Overall, the project received only 11% of the funds allocated in the last fiscal.In the project model, the centre, state, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) have to pool in money to meet the total expenditure of 8,680 crore. Flow of funds for the project at the appropriate time is most crucial to prevent cost escalation. Already, the delay in execution has led the project’s estimated cost to reach 10,526 crore, which has not been approved by the centre yet. The deadline for the project is December 2018.In 2014-15, the centre had approved 10 crore for the project, of which only 50 lakh has been released. Similarly, NIT, which is executing the works as special planning authority, released only 9.50 crore of total allocation of 75 crore. Strangely, the remaining funds were never transferred to NMRCL in the current fiscal but declared as lapsed.In the current fiscal, the centre, state and NIT had allocated 491 crore, of which only 52.50 crore has been released to NMRCL as on date. The state’s contribution in this has been very poor. Of the total allocation of 197 crore, only 50 lakh has been released by the state as on date. The centre has released 25.69% of the allocated funds, while cash-rich NIT too has released only 10% of the approved amount.The flow of funds raises many questions regarding the claims of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and union minister Nitin Gadkari about executing metro rail project at historic speed.NMRCL had started civil works worth 85 crore on the first stage — MIHAN to Airport. Besides, the construction of Metro Bhavan costing 32 crore is going on at full pace. Tendering process of Reach-I from Airport to Munje Square and construction of nine metro stations is also in the process. To start other works, NMRCL reportedly requires 350 crore in the current fiscal to keep the momentum going, which means 300 crore will be required in the remaining five months.Managing director of NMRCL Brijesh Dixit could not be contacted for his version as he was out of the country.NMRCL sources told Media that much depends upon the release of remaining funds by the centre and state. “NMRCL is continuously following up with the state for release of funds. The centre had made it clear that it will release remaining funds subject to disbursement of funds by the state. We are now following up on an almost daily basis. No works have been hit due to delay in release of funds as yet. But payments of contractors and mobilization advance to be given to consultants and private agencies will be hit in case the delays persist. NMRCL has requested NIT to release 10 crore immediately,” sources said.NMC is sitting pretty citing its cash-strapped condition.

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in association with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Govt. of India Undertaking, today inaugurated two Kiosks at Metro Bhawan to promote and provide energy efficient LED bulbs to all employees of DMRC.The Kiosks, set up as a part of the campaign to promote the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) undertaken by EESL, was inaugurated by Dr. Mangu Singh, Managing Director, DMRC and Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency in the presence of Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director/EESL.These Kiosks will be used to provide energy efficient 7W LED bulbs to around 8000 Employees of DMRC and adequate awareness will be provided on the need of adopting such energy efficient measures. In addition to this, it is planned to set up 20 more Kiosks at DMRC residential colonies (6 in no.) and maintenance depots (8 in no.) spread across the network in the next few days.“Through this collaboration, we are looking at setting up LED bulbs in our stations, colonies, offices and depots. Dubai: A 54-year-old Indian maid has won a 50-gram gold coin for travelling in the Dubai Metro as part of a campaign by local authorities to encourage people to use public transport system.Shanti Rabin, who won the gold coin, has been working as a caretaker for an Arab family in Dubai for the past 22 years.“I got this for travelling in the Metro. This is truly a blessing from God. I am very excited and happy about this victory,” said Rabin, who hails from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.After finishing work at her sponsor’s house, Rabin often travels to different places in the city to meet her friends. She would use the Dubai Metro, buses and other modes of public transportation to reach her destination.“In the process of travelling in and around the city, I collected several points on my No1 card. I am very grateful to my sponsors who gave me the freedom to travel across the city once I finished my work. New Delhi: The Delhi Metro has become the first ever Metro system in the country to be certified with the prestigious ISO 50001:2011 (EnMS) rating for efficient energy management.15 stations of the Delhi Metro system along with one of its depots have been selected for this rating, enabling the organisation to achieve a saving of 13,730 MVAH (Mega Volt Ampere Hour) and 5,628 MVAH in year 2013 and 2014 respectively which translates to monitory savings of ₹ 961 lakhs and ₹ 394 lakhs respectively.The stations and depot which have been certified are – Yamuna Bank, Anand Vihar, Sarita Vihar, Ashok Park Main, GTB Nagar, Vishwavidyalaya, Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Janpath, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shahdara, Azadpur, HUDA City Centre and the Khyber Pass depot.The ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System (EnMS) is a very recent ISO standard on Energy Management.
