Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor: Delivery of 100% ‘Made In India’ High-Speed Trains to commence soon as trial run begins this year

Delhi (Metro Rail News): National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is preparing to start trial runs later this year on the 17 KM priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad Meerut RRTS route between Sahibabad and Duhai, which is expected to be operational by March 2023. The 82 KM Delhi-Ghaziabad Meerut RRTS line will have 25 stations, two depots, and one stabling yard when it will be operational in 2025.

The RRTS corridor will run from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, passing through Ghaziabad.

NCRTC’s senior management team, led by managing director Vinay Kumar Singh, recently paid a visit to the RRTS trainset manufacturing plant and the propulsion factory, both of which are located in Gujarat.

Under the Make in India regulations, 100% of trainsets for the country’s first RRTS will be manufactured in India, with over 80% of the work being done locally. Alstom’s plant in Savli, Gujarat, is manufacturing the trainsets. In addition, the bogies, car bodies, and train testing are all manufactured at this location.

NCRTC staff evaluated the production progress of the 6-car prototype RRTS Train at the factory. The first trainset’s six cars are all at various stages of final assembly.

NCRTC crew also paid a visit to the Maneja propulsion factory, where traction/auxiliary converters/inverters were being manufactured and tested. In the following months, semi high-speed first of its kind aerodynamic trainsets with distributed power will begin.

Given the operational speed of 160 kmph and stations every 5-10 km, the RRTS trains are constructed with high-acceleration and high-deceleration in mind.

As per NCRTC, RRTS trainsets will be the first of their kind in India, with a design speed of 180 kmph. For the first RRTS route, the Savli manufacturing facility will supply 210 cars (40 trainsets). This contains 30 trainsets with six cars each for regional transit on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor and ten trainsets with three cars each for local transit in Meerut.

NCRTC released the initial look of the train for India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in September 2020. The NCRTC claimed the trainsets’ aesthetics will be inspired by Delhi’s landmark monument, The Lotus Temple, and will reflect a unique fusion of sustainability and India’s rich heritage.

RRTS trains will have ergonomically built 2×2 transverse seating, comfortable standing space, luggage racks, CCTV cameras, laptop/mobile charging stations, dynamic route maps, and an auto control ambient lighting system, among other amenities. 

The air-conditioned RRTS trains will have standard and premium class (one coach per train) and one coach reserved for women passengers.

This line will be the first in India to use the European Train Control System (ETCS) hybrid Level 2 signalling system, which is the core signalling and train control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System.

DMRC’s one-stop Next-gen app to offer virtual mall, tourism hub

Delhi (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro is planning to launch a smartphone application called ‘DMRC FuNB,’ which will allow Metro users to shop from ‘homegrown’ merchants via a virtual mall. Other features of the app include live commentary on neighbouring regions that the Metro train goes through, exclusive deals on services, cab booking, etc.

As per a DMRC official, the organisation is creating a next-generation digital technology platform (DDP), and the mobile application is part of this platform.  It is expected to improve user safety and convenience while providing DMRC with new business possibilities.

He added, “The users of the digital technology platform and mobile application would also get exclusive value offers. A FuNB mobile application user visiting a partner website through the Virtual Delhi Mall and purchasing products would be provided with benefits such as cashback, apart from loyalty or rewards programme.”

Apart from the virtual mall, the DMRC FuNB programme will include a Tourist Hub function, which will provide users with access to a “powered tourism experience,” When a Delhi Metro train passes by attractions, local events, and selected curated experiences, there will be live commentary, he stated.

According to the official, DMRC would bring on board travel and tourism partners in the Delhi NCR for this. In addition, DMRC is searching for aggregators to onboard and manage different partners so that the digital platform can give a consistent user experience.

He stated, “We’re working on a first-of-its-kind, next-generation digital platform. Users would be able to make online purchases of goods and services through a single touchpoint on the digital platform.”

The platform is expected to cover all such online requirements in one spot, from buying electronics, fashion, and groceries to ordering food and booking a cab to buying tickets for events and curated walks to vouchers and coupons. In addition, users would receive personalised offers based on demographics and online behaviour.

NHSRCL Awards All Civil Contracts of MAHSR Project for 352 Km Corridor In Gujarat

Gujarat (Metro Rail News): Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is advancing rapidly. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has granted 100% civil contracts for the construction of the MAHSR alignment in Gujarat, which covers 352 KM out of the total MAHSR corridor of 508 KM.

NHSRCL has also received civil contracts for eight high-speed rail stations in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, and Vapi and two rolling stock depots in Sabarmati and Surat.

NHSRCL recently inked an agreement with M/s Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) for the design and construction of an HSR station in Vadodara, Gujarat, as part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR C-5 Package).

The Vadodara HSR station is planned above the existing platform No. 7 of the Indian Railways’ Vadodara station to ensure seamless integration with the railways. Passengers will benefit from the convenience of quick changes between HSR and Indian Railways due to this integration.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is India’s first High-Speed Rail (HSR) network, with a length of 508 KM. Out of the 508 KM, 352 KM are in Gujarat (348 KM), Dadra and Nagar Haveli (Four KM), while the remaining 156 KM are in Maharashtra.

Construction is underway in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, where land has been acquired in proportions of 98.6% and 100%, respectively. So far, 62 per cent of land in Maharashtra has been acquired.

Out of 352 Km, Geotechnical Investigation work has been completed in 325 Km length. For doing the Geotechnical Investigation, Asia’s largest Geotechnical Lab has been developed at Surat.

The works on piles, foundations, piers, pier caps, casting & erection of girders for viaduct and stations have all begun along the route, passing through eight Gujarat districts. While piles, pile caps, open foundations, well foundations, piers, and pier caps are still being built in a 110 KM length, piling has been finished in 81 KM, foundations in 30 KM, and piers in 20 KM.

L&T TBM Shakti Passes Factory tests for Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway line Project

Uttarakhand (Metro Rail News): Herrenknecht AG conducted factory acceptance tests (FAT) on Larsen & Toubro’s first tunnel boring machine, TBM Shakti (S1310), on Tuesday for Package 4 of the 125 KM Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line project.

RVNL’s new railway line will run through 12 stations and connect both towns in Uttarakhand. In January 2021, L&T was granted an Rs. 3337.60 crore contract for Package 4 to construct the section between chainage 47.360 and 63.118.

Package 4 has 14.577 kilometres of up-line and 13.123 kilometres of down-line tunnels, of which 10.490 kilometres and 10.317 kilometres will be built utilising two Herrenknecht Hard Rock TBMs with 9.1-metre diameters. In addition, a 240m embankment at Devprayag Station, a 300m embankment at Janasu, and one minor bridge are also included in the scope.

L&T is aiming for a 60-month completion timeframe. According to their previous press release, this will be the biggest TBM ever deployed in the Himalayan region, with TBM bored tunnel length of 20.807 km, the longest for any project in the Himalayan region. Herrenknecht finished factory testing on L&T’s first TBM (Marsu) for the 1000 MW Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project in Jammu & Kashmir in January.

NHSRCL cancels underground Tender Package C2 for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Project

DELHI (Metro Rail News): The tendering procedure for the 20.377 km Package C-2 of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project was cancelled on Thursday by India’s National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL).

The underground line’s Package C2 of the mainline runs from Bandra Kurla Complex Station (Km 0.773) to Shilphata (Km 21.150) and consists of around 3 km of “undersea” twin tunnels beneath Thane Creek. The appointed contractor will require at least three Mega TBMs with a diameter of 14.5 metres.

The work includes: Construction of Tunnelling Works including Testing and Commissioning for Double Line High-Speed Railway using (TBM) and (NATM) between Mumbai Underground Station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (MAHSR Km. 0.773) and Shilphata (MAHSR Km. 21.150).

Although no official reason has been given at this point, C2’s tender has been cancelled for the second time.

NHSRCL had originally requested bids for this package in 2019, with a condition mandating a Japanese contractor to serve as the prime/lead partner in the event of a joint venture.

Over the last quarter, NHSRCL and its stakeholders have made significant progress in land acquisition. According to reports, it now stands at 62 per cent in Maharashtra, up from 35 per cent when tenders were re-invited in November 2021.

There were no bids in that round; in November 2021, NHRSCL re-invited tenders with a completion period of 1888 days (5.17 years), eliminating that stipulation. All five civil packages have been awarded in Gujarat, while Maharashtra’s three packages are either dead (C2 & C3) or underbidding (C1).

CMRS to inspect two Chennai Metro Rail stations

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will inspect the Wimco Nagar depot and Tiruvottiyur Theradi stations of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.’s Phase I extension project. According to sources, the inspection, which is expected to begin around 9.30 a.m., is expected to last four to five hours.

As per the source, they invited them to inspect it because the job was completed. CMRS will look at the passenger facilities, if it’s safe to access these two stations, how to handle emergency situations and other concerns. The CMRS is likely to issue clearance within a few days of the inspection.

Bangalore (Metro Rail News): NCC Ltd. bored and concreted the first pile to officially kick off construction on the 37 KM Airport Line (Blue Line) that would connect Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to KR Puram on February 13, 2022.

GHAZIABAD (Metro Rail News): As per officials on Wednesday, the first train of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project is expected to arrive in Ghaziabad’s Duhai depot in the next three months, after which the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will begin a trial run on the project’s 17 KM priority section.

The 82 KM RRTS project will use high-speed trains to connect the cities of Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. In addition, Ghaziabad is developing a 17 KM priority section from Sahibabad to Duhai. This portion is expected to open in March 2023, with the complete 82 KM route following in March 2025.

According to Puneet Vats, chief public relations officer, NCRTC, “We are expecting the first six-coach train to arrive at Duhai depot in May for the priority section in Ghaziabad. Thereafter, we will plan for a trial run, which includes a series of test runs.”  

The NCRTC is building 25 stations for the 82 KM line, five of them in Ghaziabad’s 17 KM priority section.

Work on the Sahibabad and Duhai stations is nearing completion. These two stations are scheduled to be the first ones to be finished. In addition, the priority section’s track laying and signalling work is also accelerated, Vats stated.

The other stations in the priority section include Ghaziabad, Gudhar, and Duhai Depot. The NCRTC has planned 30 trains with six coaches each for the RRTS project. For ease of access and exit, each car of an RRTS train will have six automated plug-in type wide doors, three on each side (business class would have four such doors, two on each side).

The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs released the initial look of the RRTS trains in September 2020. In Meerut, the NCRTC has planned ten trains, each with three coaches, to act as a local transit module. According to officials, the state-of-the-art rolling stock will be the first of its kind in India, with a design speed of 180kmph and a radiating stainless steel exterior shell with an aerodynamic design. Under the ‘Make in India’ effort, the whole rolling stock for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor would be manufactured at Bombardier’s Savli plant in Gujarat.

Indian Railways’ longest rail tunnel Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla connected

Jammu & Kashmir (Metro Rail News): Northern Railways announced the completion of India’s longest tunnel between Sumber and Arpinchala stations in the Katra-Banihal section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project on February 15. “The main tunnel of T-49 has now been connected,” officials stated.

According to Northern Railways statement, “A major milestone has been achieved by executing the break-through of tunnel T49 between Sumber and Arpinchala Station on the ongoing Katra-Banihal Section. It is worthwhile to mention that the line and level of the tunnel are precisely achieved in break-through.”

Of the 272 km length of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL) project, 161 km has already been commissioned and operationalized. According to the railways, the 111 KM route between Katra and Banihal is being built rapidly.

It Stated that the Katra-Banihal Section passes through the steep terrain of the lower Himalayas, where geology poses a significant difficulty. It has several essential bridges and long tunnels that are in various phases of construction.

T49 is a 12.758 KM long tunnel that will be the longest in Indian Railway history, surpassing the Peer Panjal Tunnel, built by USBRL on the Banihal-Qazigund segment and is 11.2 km long. The south portal (S.P.) of Tunnel T-49 is located in picturesque Sumber Village at a distance of 45 km from District H.Q. Ramban of Jammu and Kashmir at an altitude of 1400 meters, while the North Portal (N.P.) of the tunnel is located near Arpinchala village Tehsil Khari, District Ramban, in Mahu-Mangat Valley at an altitude of 1600 meters approximately.

The T-49 tunnel is divided into two sections: the main tunnel and the escape tunnel. The tunnel was built using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method), a modern drill-and-blast technique. The tunnel’s cross-section profile is modified horseshoe-shaped.

This tunnel is extraordinarily long. Three adits, called Urnihal Adit, Hingni Adit, and Kundan Adit, have also been built to ease construction. The tunnel has a 1 in 80 ruling gradient and a designed speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

To simplify rescue and repair operations, the Escape Tunnel, which is being built parallel to the Main Tunnel, is connected by cross passages every 375 metres, as per international standards.

NR entrusted the construction work to IRCON International Ltd., which divided the work into two packages and awarded them to HCC and AFCONS. As a result, HCC is working on a 5.1 KM length from South Portal, while AFCONS is working on a 7.658 KM stretch from North Portal.

According to the railways, Several issues were encountered during construction, including a shear zone, perched aquifer, and highly jointed rock mass, rock problems of squeezing, and high ingress of water.

The team of experienced engineers of Northern Railway, IRCON, and the executing agencies HCC and AFCONS successfully negotiated all challenges and made it possible to achieve this significant achievement.  Agencies employed local people for various works in the region during tunnel building, which transformed the general socio-economic environment.

Hyderabad metro rail becomes first in India to start ozone-based sanitisation of Metro coaches

Hyderabad (Metro Rail News): On Tuesday, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (L&TMRH) became the first metro rail in India to use ozone to sanitise its train coaches. It introduced three portable Ozycare Mobizone units to sanitise coaches and instil confidence in passengers in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ozone sanitisation of air and surfaces is extensively used in hospitals, healthcare, food processing plants, and for water disinfection. According to an official announcement, these units were launched following months of rigorous testing on several metro coaches, followed by testing the efficacy of the sanitisation by a NABL-accredited lab.

L&T MRH CEO and managing director K.V.B. Reddy stated, “These units are robust enough to neutralise more than 99% of pathogens both from the surface and air within the train coaches. We hope this would infuse a sense of confidence among passengers, making them choose the metro as their preferred mode of city commute during the ongoing pandemic.”

As per the sanitisation protocol of this machine, the ozone cycle lasts for less than 10 minutes, followed by an ozone destruction cycle that ensures post sanitisation safety as per Occupational Safety and Health Administration norms. During this period, this machine sanitises the entire coach.

The Ozycare Mobizone units are currently being utilised to clean metro coaches at metro depots. These machines supplement the standard, thorough manual sanitisation that takes place throughout the metro system and even reaches gaps and hard-to-reach crevices, he explained.

As per the press release, the sanitation is safe, and the Hyderabad Metro Rail has already implemented COVID-19 safety standards through careful monitoring and adherence to the guidelines. However, passengers must always wear masks, focus on social separation, and undergo compulsory thermal scanning before entering the metro station.

DMRC proposes first-ever 72km metro line to connect Noida’s Jewar Airport with Delhi’s IGI Airport

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed the first-ever 72 KM high-speed corridor between the forthcoming Noida airport in Jewar and Delhi’s IGI airport to ease up the process of mobility.

The metro will be built in two phases between Jewar and the New Delhi railway station, with 13 stations. In addition, the corridor will connect with Delhi’s Airport Express line to reach IGI 

A DMRC team told authorities from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) on Monday that the first phase, which will be 35 km and include both underground and elevated portions, will connect Knowledge Park 2 on the Aqua Line with the Noida airport.

There will be seven stops between Knowledge Park 2 and this independent corridor, including an interchange. By March 31, the DMRC is expected to present a full project report, followed by a feasibility study for the second phase of the metro link.

According to sources, the second phase will be roughly 37 km and run from Knowledge Park 2 to the New Delhi railway station. In addition, new Ashok Nagar and Yamuna Bank would be stationed along the line, which is expected to run parallel to the Noida expressway.

Arun Vir Singh, CEO – YEIDA, stated, “On Tuesday, DMRC gave a presentation of their proposal to connect Noida airport with Delhi’s IGI. The entire corridor will be 72km long. The first phase will be built from Jewar to Knowledge Park 2 and the second from Knowledge Park 2 to New Delhi railway station. The DPR for the first phase is likely to be ready by March 31.” The 35km first phase of the corridor is expected to cost around Rs 5,000 crore.

In the first phase, there will be seven stations. Apart from Noida airport and Knowledge Park 2, the tentative ones include Techzone, Salarpur Underpass, and sectors 18 and 20 of the Yamuna Expressway. The precise figures will be known only when the DPR is completed. However, trains on this route will travel faster than those on typical metro lines, and it may take an hour to travel between the two airports, including the interchanges.
