Chennai: To make travelling via metro easier and hassle-free, Chennai Metro Rail will run share autos along its metro network stations for commuters. This is part of the plan to offer last mile connectivity to those travelling via metro. Chennai Metro officials are going to invite tenders for the project soon.

As per the plan, commuter will get a chance to the closest destination at a fee and take an auto to reach the destination. As per officials at Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), tenders for the project will be invited soon.

The CMRL officials shared that the lowest bidder will get the contract and get a chance to ply share autos along with elevated and underground stretches. Most probably Tata Magic vans would be operated throughout their metro rail network.

Currently small buses were run at few Chennai Metro stations. Commuters were not very happy as the buses were less and the frequency was low. Most commuters felt that the bus facility should be provided at other stretches too.

A decision has to be arrived at on whether shared auto will run on the same routes where buses are currently operating. It is expected that the small buses will cover more areas in the months to come.

Many experts have given thumbs up for the share auto plan, but feel this project will have to be regulated. Safety of the passenger is important and the bidding company will have to assure that.

Krishnamoorthy, former joint director of the Institute of Road Transport has expressed his concern over shared auto drive. He said that many shared autos are running illegally in the city and CMRL should ensure that the auto service provider have necessary license.

Aswathy Dilip of the Institute of Transportation and Development Policy states that last mile connectivity is very crucial for making any mass transit rapid system successful. Giving example of Kochi Metro Rail Limited, Aswathy stated that the Kochi Metro officials are making a cooperative society for the autos plying in the city. The aim is provide seamless transport for all commuters.

Starting shared autos will need to be regulated via GPS tracking as well introduction of smart ticketing would be needed. This will make the shared auto concept concrete and feasible.

Advocate Abhishek Kumar Chaudhary has filed a PIL in this regard, referring to the problems faced by metro commuters and the damage to the Metro Rail authority.

The petitioner says that generally 15 days of CCTV footage of metro stations is kept safe, the Court may direct DMRC to keep it safe. The commuters suffered a lot of problems due to Metro shutdown and the financial loss also suffered by the Delhi Metro. The damages should be taken from the responsible Metro staff and action should also be taken against them.

It was also argued that such an attitude on the small issues of the metro employees is extremely objectionable. In such a situation, they will take possession of metro stations and shut them down on their demands. It is alleged that on the day of the incident, the Metro staff had also cut electricity in many places. It has been stated in the petition that on the day of the incident, SI of CISF has parked his bike in the staff parking lot. There was a debate between the two sides, and then came to the battlefield. Later the Metro was stopped by the metro employees. Cross FIR has been registered against both parties and CISF has initiated departmental inquiry against their Staff. Two SIs are suspended with immediate effect but no action was taken by DMRC till date.

After hearing the matter on June 4, the Court refused to hear the matter in vacation bench and further listed the case on July 5 for hearing before the double bench of Acting Chief Justice.

Mumbai Metro

Mumbai: Study conducted by Italian agency for preparing techno-economic feasibility in connection with Mumbai metro corridors – connecting Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan – the consulting firms states that there is going to be a huge ridership demand. This stretch is expected to have huge demand by 2021.

The consultants were appointed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The techno-feasibility report by D’Appolonia SpA , the Italian company has been submitted to MMRDA and the outcome clearly states that for ridership demand is going to be very heavy in coming years. It is therefore, important to offer metro services at this stretch. The study undertaken in 2015 for the stretch has come up with expected population rise in the stretch.

Under section 41 C MR and TP act (Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act), government had appointed MMRDA as ‘Special Planning Authority’ for 27 villages located in Kalyan and for Bhiwandi enclosed notified areas that cover 60 villages in August 2006 and March 2007.

The detailed project report prepared by the Italian consultancy has proposed owing to development taking place in Kalyan and Bhiwandi surrounding notified area (BSNA), demand for public transport will increase steeply. To meet this demand Mumbai Metro rail can help meet the growing demand in coming years.

As per the data collected during study, the peak hour per direction traffic (PHPDT) in the 23.6 km Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor is estimated to be 17,500 PHPDT

The Italian consultant in their report have stated that taking into account the peak hour passenger demand, need for Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) would be required for the stretch. With Mumbai Metro line in this stretch, commuter will get to travel fast, safely and easily. More so, metro will be an environmental-friendly mode of transport for commuters over other means.

The importance of Thane-Kalyan areas is that these are trip generating points in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This implies that it is from these two locations that traffic originates as well exit the city.

In the DPR the Italian consultant has also stated there is lack of connectivity in all the three areas. Besides in the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan stretch there is sizable middle class population as well several small industries and warehouse. These factors make the three zones major trip attraction points. With a Mumbai metro line connecting this stretch, traffic condition will improve and improve connectivity for commuters.

As per the agreement signed between parties, AMRC will bear half the cost while the other half will be financed under PPP model. VUDA will be overseeing the operations of the light metro rail project. This good news came into limelight with the managing director N P Ramakrishna Reddy of AMRC meeting the P Narayana, Minister for Municipal Administration.

P Basanth Kumar, vice-chairman VUDA while interacting with media stated that a detailed project report (DPR) is been worked out and will be sent to the necessary departments.

It was in January that the Andhra Pradesh government had sent a request to centre to give their nod for the construction of metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. This request was sent by N Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The request was submitted when Naidu was in New Delhi to attend a meeting.

Reddy in October had confirmed that pre-bidding was held for VMR and around 11 reputed international and national consultants had shown interest in the project.

India’s ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan who was also working as an advisor to the Andhra Pradesh government on Vizag  and Vijayawada metro rail projects has already submitted resignation to the state government. This has only complicated things but residents are hopeful that work on light metro line begins soon.

Delhi Metro | DMRC opens 25 km long Kalkaji Mandir-Janakpuri West section of Magenta Line

0

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) achieved the another milestone today.  Magenta Line (Kalkaji Mandir-Janakpuri West) of Delhi Metro inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

Magenta Line Route Map
Magenta Line Route Map

The metro commuters will be able to enjoy the journey on train from May 29 (Tuesday) morning at 6.00am onward. With the start of the Magenta Line, residents of Delhi, Haryana (Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal), and UP (Ghaziabad and Noida) will benefit from the start of the section. The special thing is that due to the introduction of this line, the travel period between Noida and Gurugram will be reduced by at least 30 minutes.

With the inauguration, the domestic terminal of the IGI Airport will be within the reach of Delhi Metro network. This will provide additional facilities to domestic airlines. Metro officials said that after the commissioning of this section, the total length of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) network will be 277 km. He said that this would provide a direct metro facility between Botanical Garden and Janakpuri West. It will also be easier to reach Terminal 1 of IGI Airport from South Delhi and West Delhi. Apart from this, the convenience of transport in Delhi-NCR will also be improved. The entire Magenta Line is affiliated to four major educational institutions, JNU, IIT, Jamia Millia Islamia and Amity University in Noida. This will greatly benefit the students. Cant area will also be connected to the metro through this line. According to the DMRC officials, it will take about 50 minutes to reach the Botanical Garden (Blue Line in Noida) from Huda City Center (Yellow Line towards Gurgaon) by starting Magenta Line. So far, after interchanging with Rajiv Chowk, it takes about one and a half hours to get to Gurgaon from Noida.

Hauzkhas Metro station will be the hub of interchange

On the Magenta line, Hauzkhas Metro Station will be the largest interchange hub for Huda City Center and Noida passengers. So far, Noida passengers had to go through 34 metro stations to reach the Huda city center through the Yellow Line through the Yellow Line. While now Noida passenger will be able to interconnect Hauzkhas metro station on Magenta line and reach Huda city center with 25 stations. Hauzkhas Metro Station is underground and is 29 meters deep, which is about 8 floors depth.

Mobile network issue will have to face

Mobile network is currently the biggest problem on this line. A total of 16 new Metro stations have been constructed in this new section about 25 km long. 14 stations are underground and only 2 stations are elevated. The underground ground of the station is the biggest reason for people’s problems. That’s because mobile networks are not coming at all these underground stations. There is a possibility of getting a mobile network only at Shankar Vihar and Sadar Bazar Cantonment between Kalakaji Mandir from Janakpuri West as these two stations are elevated. However, due to being in the Army area, both the stations may also face the problem of the network. However, DMRC officials say that soon they will arrange such arrangements according to the needs and facilities of the passengers so that the network can also be available at the underground stations.
