Hyderabad Metro | Get a taste of airport luxury at metro stations soon

Hyderabad: In a bid to improve commuter’s experience, Hyderabad Metro will soon be offering trolley service akin to those available at airport. Riders will soon be able to travel hassle-free as they can pick up a trolley from metro station, carry to the railway station or bus depot.

With this service a metro commuter can pick a trolley, offload the luggage on it and reach railway or bus station. They can then leave the trolley at the platform itself after taking the luggage off it.

Managing director Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), NVS Reddy shared that work on the remaining Corridor One that is the Ameerpet to LB Nagar stretch will be completed by end of July. In August this stretch will be made operational and open to public.

Reddy explaining the trolley service facility said that commuters will get airport like ambience at metro stations. Quoting an examples Reddy added that rider commuting from Miyapur or Kukatpally to Secunderabad railway station can just carry on their luggage in their trolley and afterwards leave the trolleys at the platform only.

This facility will first be started at metro stations that are closer to public transport hubs. The stations include Begumpet, Secunderabad, Nampally and Malakpet.

Reddy added that once these services are rolled out, it will be the first such facility to be made accessible at any Metro station in the country.

And it’s not just trolley services that metro station will offer; very soon commuters will be able to buy essential goods and groceries from Hyderabad Metro stations. The authorities are planning to start ‘hubs of activity’

Reddy shared that they are making every attempt to turn metro stations public friendly places. Like they have made good footpaths along the stations along and installed safety railing for easy commute.  There are street furniture is place along with greenery along the medians. As part of the plan 20% of the concourse area will be used for shops wherein commuters can shop essential items and groceries. The idea is to improve commuter’s experience when they travel in Hyderabad Metro.

Chennai Metro | Electronic recharge kiosks reject new currencies

Chennai: In what seem to be an embarrassment of sorts, commuters at Chennai Metro were surprised with card kiosks at metro stations rejecting new notes. The kiosks are installed for commuters to recharge smart cards to buy tokens for rail ticket.

The kiosks that are made to ensure commuters do not have to wait in long queues. But ironically they had to wait in long queues at ticket counters since the electronic recharge kiosks were rejecting new notes. The kiosk was also rejecting smaller denomination like Rs10, Rs 50 and Rs 200.

  In fact these machines end up performing task other than what was asked for them – that is reducing waiting time for passengers. But these kiosks have ended up extending the waiting time further.

As per an employee working in the underground hub of Central Metro shared that these electronic kiosks are not programmed to accept new notes. That is why there is technical glitch.

The employee further added that one cannot transact with new Rs 500 notes, this being the case even before RBI issuing new currency notes. As per current set up, commuter can use kiosks to recharge for minimum Rs 100. For amount lower than this, they have to stand at the ticket counter to recharge their card.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has put up kiosks at all the metro stations based on the number of commuters on daily basis. Those stations where daily traffic is more, CMRL has installed more than two kiosks. Vadapalani, Koyambedu, Alandur, and airport stations have more than two kiosks. Chennai Metro stations that have less traffic have one or two kiosks each.

Interestingly, CMRL introduced smart card machine to improve travel experience of commuters. It also made its usage mandatory when it opened the first underground line between Nehru Park and Koyambedu in May 2017. Ironically, it later started issuing token to manage the traffic.

CMRL has assured that the kiosks will be tweaked and commuters will be able to use the machine within two weeks.

Patna Metro | The Metro rail project plan setback for until next year

Patna: Urban Development and Housing Department on Friday bumped into controversies because after puzzling the public of Patna from over four years on the issue of Metro Rail in the state capital and now they are up with a delay for a year because of some technical snags the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the metro rail will have to be drafted from scratch before being sent to the Center for its approval. On 14 September 2011, the Planning Commission of India (now NITI Aayog) gave approval for the Patna Metro.

Citing a host of issues that they failed to take into account in the past, officials said due to the four over-bridges under the Lohia Ringroad scheme on Bailey Road, including the ones near Lalit Bhawan, Punaichak intersection, Hartali Chowk, and the High Court, it was necessary to amend the previously-prepared DPR before making it the final version.

Once the Center approves the DPR, it would be sent to different departments for their evaluation. The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train and the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail projects were inspected on 6th May by Japan’s parliamentary Vice-Minister, Alcimoto Masatoshi.

The bullet train which will be between Ahmedabad and Mumbai will have a 21 km undersea tunnel and the total length will be 508 km.

 

 

Delhi Metro | DMRC Pink line stretch 8.1 Km to connect INA metro hub

New Delhi:  Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has brought good news for commuters to INA Sarojni Nagar, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar. Metro services of pink line are all set to start as earlier. Total length of Pink Line was planned to be opened in different stages its total length was kept 58.59 Km which include 39.479 Km elevated and 19.117 Km underground. There is total 38 number of station under which 26 stations are elevated and 12 are underground. Line was planned to be by September 2018 (except Trilokpuri to Mayur Vihar pkt-1 section because of land issue in Trilokpuri). 20.6 Km section of  Majlis Park to Durgapuri South Campus was opened for public on14 March. And  8.1 Km section between Durgabai Deshmuk South Campus to Lajpat Nagar likely to open as earlier, and other section  Lajpat Nagar –Mayur Vihar PKT-1 and Trilokpuri to Shiv Vihar is expected to be completed by July 2018, September 2018, and August 2018 respectively.

DMRC Spokesperson said, “The trial runs between Durgabhai Deshmukh South Campus and Lajpat Nagar are going on and the section is likely to be opened in July.”

He further stated that, “The necessary documentation for the inspection by Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is being completed and some other mandatory prior approvals are being taken right now.”

He also said that, “The trial runs are in progress between Shiv Vihar and I P Extension, and will be extended upto Trilokpuri very shortly. This section is likely to be completed by August,” and “Section between Lajpat Nagar and Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 is expected to be completed by September.”

Mumbai Metro | MMRC asked to safeguards against noise pollution

Mumbai: Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has been asked by Bombay High Court what measures have they taken to safeguard to ensure that the citizens’ constitutional right to a pollution-free environment is protected. This protection also includes safeguarding from noise pollution as well.

MMRC which is facing flake for its construction work going on for Mumbai metro line 3, will have to now furnish answers. Bombay HC has sought answers from MMRC over their initiative to safeguard citizen’s right during its construction work.

MMRCL had filed an application seeking modification to earlier order by the HC that has put a stay on work going on at Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai in the night. A division bench of Justices AS Oka and Riyaz Chagla was hearing the application filed by MMRCL.

In its application, the MMRCL has pointed out that it had to carry out tunnel boring and excavation work cannot be stopped once it is started.

Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhkoni, representing MMRCL communicated that the work will be carried out for 18 months. He added that the excavation work will not lead to generating lot of noise. The noise would only be of trucks that would be transporting excavated soil, added Kumbhkoni.

Kumbhkoni added that the Environment Protection Act and the Noise Pollution Rules did are not relevant to the metro rail project.

The court said it would continue hearing the matter on Monday.

Kochi Metro | KMRL seeks land on Hospital Road

Kochi: Kochi metro is the first metro in the country which connects roads, rails and waterway facilities and every Kochi metro station is designed on a specific theme Kerala culture, diversity and geography. It has elevated route spanning 25 km from Aluva to Petta 23 stations.

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd are still waiting for the complete forming of the walkway. The whole idea of making a walkway is to connect the two-metro station Ernakulam Boat Jetty and Maharaja college. There should be proper spaces for parking vehicles as the improper manner of parking vehicles over the footpath led to problem of walking for the pedestrian. The Metro agency will plan to design a walkway with a proper parking system and soon they start construction where the land is available. They have taken the matter of widening footpath and modern bus shelter along the stretch

Chennai Metro | CMRL completes over 50K trips through bicycle sharing service

CHENNAI: For the benefits of the passengers and to promote a healthier and sustainable mode of transport, the CMRL metro station has introduced a bicycle sharing scheme of providing last mile connectivity to metro rail stations several bicycle scheme has been introduced.

At 16 different stations, metro rail provides other facilities for last mile connectivity other than bicycle which are feeder buses, buggy services at the airport and vadapalani metro stations, tie-ups with cabs and walkalator linking the airport with metro stations.

12 metro stations Nehru Park, Kilpauk, Pachaiyappa’s College, Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar Tower, Thirumangalam, Koyambedu, Ashok Nagar, Ekkattuthangal, Alandur, St. Thomas Mount, Little Mount have this three bicycle scheme namely CMRL bicycle from 17 January PEDL bicycle scheme by Athi’s Car from October 2017 started a GPS enable bicycle scheme at 3 stations namely Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East. • For the connectivity to several routes from metro station feeder service (small busses) have been introduced.
• For last mile connectivity at 16 metro stations, the CMRL entered an agreement with M/S OLA & UBER cabs.

Hyderabad Metro | Asian Development Bank agree to fund metro projects

Hyderabad: Asian Development Bank (ADB) is all set to finance the Hyderabad Metro as well as many infrastructure projects going on in the city. The ADD team has already started going around the city and is meeting officials to take things ahead.

ADB has started preparing grounds for taking things ahead. Their officials are holding meetings to take the funding proposal ahead. A team of ADB has already visited the city.

The team of ADB has also met SK Joshi, Chief Secretary as well as principal secretary, MAUD, Arvind Kumar. During the meeting the officials discussed on how financial assistance can be extended to fund various infrastructure projects in Hyderabad including Hyderabad Metro.

ADB gave a list of projects their bank was willing to fund. These include the second phase of Hyderabad Metro Rail, the Strategic Road Development Programme to construct new flyovers, Musi beautification and multi-grade separators.

The finding has been made possible as earlier GHMC Mayor Bonthu has submitted proposal to ADB. The proposal was given to get financial assistance for several infrastructure projects going on in the city. Bonthu has given the proposal during his Delhi trip earlier.

ADB executive director, Kshatrapati Shivaji as well as Rajeev Singh, senior country specialist, had discussed the infrastructure projects being planned in the city and the funds necessary to implement these projects.

Principal Secretary, MAUD, Arvind Kumar is optimistic about the development. He is happy with preliminary talks and stated that the discussions were encouraging.

Delhi Metro | DMRC Employees postponed strike after the High Court decision

New Delhi: It is good news for Delhi metro commuters that the big trouble is now hold for some days. After the interference of Delhi High Court, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Employees Union (DMRCEU) and the Staff Council have postponed their strike (total shutdown plan) for later but they are on partial strike which was started from 19 June. On 29 June High Court has given a huge relief to the Delhi-NCR residents, have stop from thousands of employees of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) who were on strike. Employees had scheduled to go on strike at midnight after talks were negotiated by both sides. After the talks between DMRC and employees failed on Friday, about 9,000 non-executive employees were threatening to go on strike from Saturday, due to the strike, Metro services might have shut down and millions of people might faced inconvenience.

Secretary Staff Council has also written a letter to Chief Minister Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, employees have asked his cooperation in an ongoing strike and waiting for the response. And he has instructed to another ministry to take a genuine decision in this regard.

The Delhi High Court questioned to provide justification for the strike. Justice Vipin Sanghi passed an interim order after a quick hearing and said that the proposed action of the first metro staff did not seem right or legal. DMRC provides services to about 2.5 million passengers per day. For this, he has not been given adequate notice and the compromise process is still going on.

On the other hand, in view of the strike, DMRC filed an urgent petition, which was placed before the Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal for hearing. He sent it to Justice Sanghi for hearing. Justice Sanghi said in his 5-page order, “I am willing to provide interim relief according to the demand of the application. Accordingly, the defendants (employees) are prevented from going on strike on June 30 or till further order in the case. Court to adjourn on next hearing on July 6

Earlier, non-executive employees of the Metro had threatened to go on strike from June 30 because demands like salary increases were not fulfilled by DMRC.

About 12,000 people are employed in DMRC, which has about 9 thousand non-executive employees. Some non-executive employees of went on strike by June 19, 2018, at some metro stations including Yamuna Bank and Shahdara in support of their eight point demand

Delhi’s Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has directed the Managing Director of DMRC that the demands of non-executive employees should be resolved immediately.

Gehlot said in a letter to the Managing Director, “The dispute should be resolved as soon as possible so that the services of the Metro must not interrupt. If Metro services are interrupted, then millions of passengers will have to face problems.”

All these employees play an important role in running the Delhi Metro network. Without Employees cooperation it would not be easy to extend DMRC network in such vast network. So its responsibility of DMRC to resolve on going disputes.
