BENGALURU: Namma Metro’s connectivity from Byappanahalli to Whitefield will reduce peak hour travel time by 21% for commuters between Bagmane Tech Park and Kadugodi, reveals an Uber survey on Tuesday.

Uber’s free urban planning tool, ‘Movement’ has launched in Bengaluru after Delhi and Mumbai. In a study ‘Examining the impact of Metro on travel times in Bengaluru: Byappanahalli- Whitefield extension’ based on the data to calculate the impact of the eastern expansion of the Purple Line.

Comparing peak travel times from Bagmane Tech Park in Byappanahalli to Kadugodi in Whitefield between January- March 2017 and January – March 2018. The study points to a 13.5 % increase in the morning peak travel time and a higher increase of 16.4% during evening peak travel time between the two periods.

The study has found a significant difference in the peak travel during weekdays compared to weekends, with weekday morning travel time being 57% more than the weekend. Interestingly, the study also estimates that the average travel time in the first quarter of 2020 will be upwards of 57 minutes. “After a detailed analysis, the tool reveals that post the expansion of the metro line, there will be a 21% decrease in travel time between the areas near both ends of the metro route, hinting at potential solutions to incentivize multiple last-mile and first-mile connectivity options alongside the metro to smoothen overall travel times,” the study said. Besides a reduction in travel time, there will also be an expected reduction in stress, noise pollution and carbon emissions in the city, it adds.

The under-construction metro project between Byappanahalli to Whitefield is expected to be completed by 2021-2022 Uber Movement, a data-sharing exercise on traffic patterns to improve urban mobility is expected to help government and city planners make informed decisions on infrastructure, urban mobility, and traffic management.

Christian Freese, Uber spokesperson said, “Through sustained efforts by our mapping team, we have been able to gather large amounts of traffic and congestion data for Bengaluru. We are excited to launch this platform and its benefits for Bengalureans to encourage better infrastructure, city planning, and data-driven policy solutions that will utilize technology to make the city more efficient. Together with the government, civil society, and other stakeholders, we aim to continue playing a key role in solving for urban mobility challenges in Bengaluru.”

“Uber Movement has the potential to further support informed policy decisions and strengthen a data-led approach to urban planning. In this era of big data, we can extract information around traffic trends and help measure the impact of extended metro lines, first/last mile connectivity options, traffic interventions, etc” said Rajeev Gowda, Rajya Sabha MP.

Mumbai Metro Update: Rahee Emerges as the Lowest Bidder for Track Work on 11.38 Km-long Line 9 (Representational image)

Mumbai:  In the next few years Metro is set to change the way people travel in the megacity. Numbers of commuters have already started taking the spotlight away from the Mumbai local that ferries around 78 lakh commuters daily. The Metro has completely replaced the future of local trains in the city is being replaced by the Metro rail being developed on a very big scale. When executing the railway projects in Mumbai and its metropolitan region, Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A could be the last big project for the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). The approximate Rs 55,000 crore MUTP-3A projects are being considered a monetary drain, even the suburban local trains are also being seen as a burden by both the Indian Railways and the Maharashtra government.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is also developing 13 separate metro rail corridors worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore. These metro rail networks would also extend in far suburbs as well. There is already building metro rail network of over 100-120 kilometers long. After completion, all corridors will traverse through 300 kms, according to official sources.

A Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) said that the first breakthrough was made in the construction of Mumbai’s first 33.5-km-long fully underground Metro corridor connecting Colaba-Bandra-Seepz. This has played a very crucial role and significant work towards the completion of the Metro-3 project. It is a result of blood and sweat expended by a team of 250 engineers, technical and mechanical workers together.

MMRC is executing the Metro rail project:

The Metro-3 project is divided into seven civil construction packages. The tunnel breakthrough witnessed last month was part of package 7, which is spread between T-2 till Aarey Colony. It will also provide access to Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 at Marol Naka and several other business hubs in Andheri. The MMRC has also completed a 9-kilometer-long tunnel.

As per official sources, recently French multinational Alstom outbid the Chinese publicly traded rolling stock (metro coaches) manufacturer CRRC Corporation to bag a contract worth 315 million euros from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) for the 33.5-km Metro 3 between Cuffe Parade & SEEPZ. Alstom will supply 248 Metro cars.

Patna Metro | revised detailed project report stated, will run 20m beneath Bailey Road

0
KEC emerged lowest bidder for Electrification Contract of Patna Metro

Patna: The Patna Metro, says its revised detailed project report, will run 20m beneath Bailey Road on the west-east corridor.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the revised document submitted by the urban and housing development department. It will now be sent to the Centre.

Sharing details, a senior department official closely associated with the Metro project said: “The design of the project has been prepared in such a manner that it would not affect the existing structures and take care to cause minimum disturbance to commuters during its execution.”

The detailed project report was revised because, in the earlier one, the west-east corridor was supposed to run along the centre of Bailey Road but due to the execution of Lohia Path Chakra project, some portion of the Metro would have hindered its route.

“Roughly speaking, the stretch between Mahavir temple on Bailey Road and Niyojan Bhavan will now run north of the Bailey road median and hence, the Metro alignment would not come in the way of the Lohia Path Chakra,” said the official.

He said after the approval of the state cabinet, the document will now be sent to the Centre for final approval.

“Once the document is submitted to the Centre, we would pursue it so that the detailed project report could be approved at the earliest, as the goal is to lay the foundation stone of this ambitious project this year itself,” added the official.

Conceived in 2011, the Metro project entails laying of around 331km of tracks and developing two corridors — east-west and north-south — for providing seamless connectivity for commuters.

The revised detailed project report says that the project will have an estimated cost component of about Rs 17,800 crore.

While the west-east corridor will run between Danapur area and Patna Junction via Dakbungalow Square, the south-north corridor will run between the inter-state bus terminal and from there to Rajendra Nagar and then to Ashok Rajpath and finally, to the railway station via Gandhi Maidan. The urban and housing development department official said work on both the corridors could start simultaneously but these things will be decided only after the Centre approves the detailed project report.

Exclusive Interview of IAS Pankaj Kumar Bansal, MD, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.

1
Pankaj Kumar Bansal
IAS, Pankaj Kumar Bansal, MD, Chennai Metro

Recently, Metro Rail News has conducted an interview with IAS Pankaj Kumar Bansal, Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited. In 2013,  Mr. Pankaj Kumar Bansal took over the charge of Chennai Metro as Managing Director, he wondered why platforms of 240 meters needed to be constructed when the train required only 140 to 145 meters to park at the station. He is the 1997 batch IAS officer, ensured that in two years, his team came up with a ‘Yes, We Can’ answer to his 145 meter challenge, arguably “for the first time in the world.” Two key lines were flagged off recently, with passengers now able to travel from Chennai Central to the Airport, with a frequency of a train every 5 minutes, likely to go up to one every two and a half minutes, at just seventy rupees. Here are excerpts from the interview.

  • How long will the project take to complete and what sort of arrangements have been made to ensure commuters do not face any hurdle during the construction work?

It will take minimum 6-8 years to complete the project from the day of the signing of a contract with the multilateral agency. Traffic management plan will be implemented at the workplace to ensure the commuters safety.  The main aim is to relieve, wherever possible, or minimize the (short-term) disruption to normal traffic likely to be caused by the construction of the metro works.

  • Chennai Metro Rail Limited is all set to start work on build the ambitious 107.55 km under phase-2. It has issued a notice to property owners on this stretch. Is the process of acquiring land going on smoothly or facing hiccups akin to that faced by Maha-Metro?

The process of acquiring land going on smoothly. However, in a few cases, petitioners have given objections with regard to alignment, the location of metro stations and compensation.  Our team is in constant touch with them to resolve issues amicably.

  • Talking about sustainability, which is one of the core values of CMRL, are the officials looking to set up e-charging stations like the Hyderabad Metro. Power Gird in partnership with Hyderabad Metro has expressed the desire to set up a similar facility at Chennai Metro stations too. Have talks been initiated between CMRL and Power Grid?

CMRL has already signed an agreement with Power Grid Corporation of India for the provision of e-charging at 4 metro stations.  Further expansion to other stations is also in the anvil.

  • In terms of ensuring passenger safety, what measures has CMRL taken to make sure commuters travel tension-free? Any special provisions made for women commuters?

All metro stations have got 40-60 cameras at various locations in the station for the entire safety of women and other commuters.  These cameras are monitored from each control room around the clock. In addition, each coach in the train has 4 cameras which continuously monitors and the same is recorded.  A rapid action team of state police makes rounds of metro premises for additional safety.

Delhi Metro | CISF commandos train to tackle hostage situation inside Metro tunnel

CISF Trainning
CISF Trainning

New Delhi: After recent inputs from Central intelligence agencies over the need for securing metro trains inside underground tunnels, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has started a response training program for its quick reaction teams (QRTs). Senior officers said that the training will equip commandos to handle the situation in case a metro coach is highjacked, rescue passengers and neutralize terrorists inside the tunnel.

An officer associated with the program said the training which started recently will be completed within three months. The drill is conducted between midnight and 4 am when metro operations for the public are closed, he said.

Officials said the paramilitary force is conducting the training at different stations every day so that commandos become familiar with most of the existing tunnels.

“There is no cause for alarm for the public. It was during our meetings that we learned that the metro trains inside tunnels are vulnerable to terror attacks. There are chances that passengers could be held hostage inside trains. In such a scenario, our approach to the affected train or coach becomes difficult. Keeping in mind the challenges, a programme was designed so that our commandos can be equipped and trained to intervene in such a situation,” said an officer, not authorized to speak to the media.

The officer said in such a situation, commandos will approach the train from both ends. “Our role is to control the situation until the National Security Guards arrive. However, since the CISF is the first responder to any such situation in Delhi Metro, we need to be prepared and trained to handle such a crisis,” the officer said.

Recalling challenges faced by commandos during the training, he said the tunnels remain dark and are relatively low on oxygen. “A medical team accompanies the commandos as they move into the tunnel. The tunnel has lights but they are very dim. In any such situation, the entire operation will have to be completed in the dark. Our men are already trained in handling weapons blindfolded,” the officer said.

The CISF men are also being taught how to access a locked metro train from outside. “They will carry specially designed tools which will help them get inside a train,” the officer added.

The officer also mentioned that such alerts from intelligence agencies are received in routine to strengthen the existing security perimeter. “It does not concern general commuters. There is no cause for alarm though,” he said.

High speed rail to soon link Meerut, Alwar with IGI

0

New Delhi: People from Meerut, Panipat, and Alwar will soon be able to reach Delhi airport in less than 90  minutes.Rail-based high-speed commuter service, on the lines of Crossrail of London and RER of Paris, is being developed to connect regional nodes of NCR with the Aerocity at IGI Airport.

The Centre government, along with the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, are part of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which is the executing agency for the two other links — the Delhi-Panipat and the Delhi-Alwar corridors. It will have Sarai Kale Khan as their interoperable hub.

An interoperable hub will provide facility to passengers to travel hassle free and a passenger can commute from one state to another without changing any train.

All three corridors will be interconnected. Of the three corridors, work on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut (DGM) will start by this year itself. “DGM is much ahead. The UP government has already approved the corridor,” said an NCRTC spokesperson.

While metro rail projects generally serve the need of intra-city movement and operate within metropolitan cities like Delhi, Chennai or Kochi, etc; RRTS will connect suburban and urban centers in NCR, and will run right from one city center to another, thus providing a seamless transit network to the entire region.

This RRTS corridor will originate from Sarai Kale Khan integrated terminus station in Delhi and will end at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. Enroute, it will cross the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, railway tracks and also the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Passing through industrialised areas of Haryana and Rajasthan, this smart line will benefit the entire region between Gurgaon to Alwar, while increasing the productivity of a large number of commuters traveling from Delhi and Gurgaon to regions in Manesar and Neemrana.

The DPR of this corridor is in advance stages of finalisation. This line will also connect Munirka, Aerocity and move via Gurgaon, Sotanala, and Rewari to reach Alwar in Rajasthan. This corridor will be constructed in three phases The first phase will be from Sarai Kale Khan to SNB (Shahjahan –  Neemrana – Behror), which will be a 126 km long stretch. Out of which, 81.86 km area falls under Haryana and the estimated cost for this phase is likely to be around 25,000 crores.
