TSRTC Strike : 3.2 lakh commuters travel in Hyderabad metro

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News) : Hyderabad Metro Rail in travel 3.2 lakh commuters as consequence of the ongoing strike by the staff and workers of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC).

City buses stayed off the roads completely, except for stray suburban services run by privately engaged drivers, leaving regular commuters to find their own means of transport.

Quite a few opted for Metro Rail based on their respective locations, increasing the footfalls especially during peak hours. Lengthy queues were seen in front of the ticketing counters, and near the entry and exit points, and owing to paucity of staff, clearing of the rush was slow. Platforms too were seen crowded to the brink.

“I usually take air-conditioned bus from Dilsukhnagar up to Banjara Hills where I work, as the location does not fall on any of the Metro Rail corridors. Today, I had to board the train up to Lakdikapul and take an auto from there,” says M. Sravanthi, a software professional.

However, during off-peak hours, traffic steeply fell, and not many passengers were seen at the station. Though HMRL authorities announced trains would be run every five minutes during off-peak hours, there was no need for the same, and trains ran with even 10 minutes gap post-noon up to evening peak hours.

As per information from HMRL, at 11 a.m., footfall was one lakh across stations, against weekend usual of 50,000, and by 1 p.m., the stations recorded 1.45 lakh entries against the normal 1.02 lakh. By 4 p.m., there were1.92 lakh entries against the usual 1.36 lakh, which went up to 2.61 lakh by 6 p.m., and 3.2 lakh by 8 p.m., from the usual 2.5 lakh.

MD, HMRL, N.V.S.Reddy said the crowds were manageable and expected to stay the same for two days. Monday, however, will be a challenge if the strike continues, when additional teams and extra personnel will be mobilised.

Grey Line connecting Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor of Delhi Metro Inaugurated

DELHI (Metro Rail News): Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Delhi CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal & Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot flags off The 4.29 kilometre-long Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor of Delhi Metro’s Grey Line today at Metro Bhavan. Passenger services on the section will commence from 5 pm on Oct 4, 2019.

The Grey Line section has three stations Dwarka, Nangli and Najafgarh. While Dwarka and Nangli are elevated stations, Najafgarh is underground.

The opening of the stretch has put Najafgarh for the first time on the Delhi Metro map, which will be now connected with the rest of the network.

The section has an interchange at the Dwarka station, where commuters can change to Blue Line, which connects Dwarka Sector-21 to Noida Electronic City and Vaishali in Ghaziabad.

Trial runs on the Dwarka-Najafgarh stretch had begun in July. Earlier this week, the corridor got a safety approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to begin passenger operations on the stretch.

The section is being further extended by another 1.18 kilometres till Dhansa Stand, which is slated for completion by December 2020.

The opening of the corridor is expected to give a boost to connectivity and ease commuting to Najafgarh.

Glimpses of Inauguration

Delhi Metro Rail Network

The Delhi Metro will cover a total length of 347.65 km along with 253 metro stations, After the opening of the Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor,

Important information

Corridor Name: Dwarka-Najafgarh Corridor (Line-9)
Length: 4.295 km (Elevated-2.754 km, Underground-1.541 km)
Stations: 3 (2 elevated and 1 underground)
Stations Name:  Dwarka, Nangli, Najafgarh
Interchange Station Dwarka
Line Colour Code: Grey

Dumble Shape Metro Station

Najafgarh Metro Station is unique and first of its kind metro station that has been constructed in dumbbell-shaped due to the lack of space in the area and to decongest the traffic flow across the roads.

According to DMRC, Najafgarh Metro station was initially planned in the regular rectangle shape like other stations but when the construction work began on-ground, some of the private lands could not be acquired for the project. Due to this DMRC had no other option but to plan the metro station with the land which was available to them.

The dumbbell-shaped metro station has been completed in such a way that the station area will shrink by a few meters in the middle, but the metro engineers have not compromised with the space required for passenger movement in either the ticketing area or the platform area.

Completion of Phase III

After the opening of the Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor, all stations of the Delhi Metro under Phase-III project will become functional. However, due to land issue a small section between Mayur Vihar Pocket I and Trilokpuri on Pine Line not yet completed. The construction work on Phase III was started in December 2011 and the completion was expected in 2016. But due to delay in various reasons the DMRC has missed the various deadlines of the Phase III project and expected to get completed by 2020.

More than 20 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were used simultaneously to expedite the work in Phase III and work on the Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor was completed in March 2019. The trial run of the metro train was started in the month of June and completed in September recently. The train on the Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor will be fed by Najafgarh depot.
