Track Casting on Kanpur Metro's Priority Corridor

KANPUR (Metro Rail News): Under the Priority Stretch of Kanpur Metro i.e. between IIT & Motijheel, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) has commenced the casting of the ballastless track. Metro engineers casted the first cross-over yesterday night near IIT. It is to be briefed that cross-overs are the points where Metro trains change their line and direction of movement. Under the Priority Corridor, such cross-overs are at terminal stations viz. IIT & Motijheel and at Geeta Nagar Station, where connection to the Polytechnic Metro Depot are planned.

Praising the dedication of Metro engineers even under the such times of crisis, UPMRC’s MD Shri Kumar Keshav said, “We are progressing toward timely completion of Priority Section of
Kanpur Metro Rail Project even in the ongoing difficult times. Now, we have moved to the further stages of the Project and we have commenced the works of track, signaling-telecom, electrical and other systems too. I congratulate the track team of UPMRC and GC for their efforts and dedication resulting in such efficient outcomes.”

UPMRC has awarded the international contract for the supply of Head Hardened (HH) Rails for the Kanpur Metro Project, but with the objective of saving time they are utilising existing resources and the rails which had been leftover during the Lucknow Metro Project.

Briefing about the significance of the ballastless track, It is informed that ballastless tracks are used in the Metro Projects as they don’t have ballast (stones) and the least maintenance is required. During the long 15-16 hours of train operations, Metro trains are operated on very tight frequency so there is almost no scope of maintenance during these hours and that’s why an efficient system is needed which can provide the good ridership with the least maintenance requirements. Besides this advantage there are additional benefits of long life-cycle, stability & ride comfort with such tracks.

The civil construction work on the 9KMs long Priority Corridor in Kanpur was started on 15th Nov., 2019, which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble CM Shri Yogi Adityanath under the auspicious presence of Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs (I/C). Since then the construction works of the project are being executed with remarkable pace by UPMRC’s engineers to ensure availability of a world class Metro service for the Kanpur City in the minimum time frame possible.

Larsen & Toubro began pouring concrete for the first pier of the 508.17-kilometer Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) line on May 5, 2021, which will link the two cities through 12 stations in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

This landmark was reached in Gujarat’s Valsad District about three months after workers began pouring concrete for the first pier’s open base (pile cap). Last week, shuttering panels arrived on-site to help with casting jobs.

This pier (P-13), situated at chainage KM 205+500 on the line’s 237.1 km Package C4, is one of only two of eight civil packages awarded for the main-construction line’s so far. It runs elevated from Zaroli Village on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border to Vadodara via four stations at Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, and Bharuch, accounting for 46.66 percent of the main-line and making it the longest of them all.

As a reminder, the majority of the line (468 / 508 km) will be elevated, with contractors such as L&T planning to construct it using the full span launching system.

I fine-tuned the line’s alignment within Gujarat here a few weekends ago to follow its exact alignment. You will see site clearing for large stretches of land between Ahmedabad and Vadodara if you turn to satellite view. In reality, at Bodka village, south of Vadodara, three megaprojects are visible within 2 kilometres of each other. From west to east, the DME (Delhi-Mumbai Expressway) and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train (MAHSR) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).
