MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to procure 10 extra rakes for the 20 km monorail project between Chembur and Jacob Circle. Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives Ltd. will deliver the first of ten monorail rakes in February 2023. The Mumbai Monorail will run more frequently now—every 10 minutes instead of every 20–25 minutes with the the new rakes.

“We have decided to appoint an independent agency to ensure that the rakes are world-class,” a senior official said. Trials will be conducted after the arrival of the first rake and after that three rakes will arrive once every three months.

The new rakes would have greater safety features and be more roomy, according to MMRDA. The monorail is currently being run by seven rakes with two remaining on standby. An Indian company would deliver 10 rakes with four cars each for this corridor, according to the MMRDA announcement.

The rakes must be designed by Medha Servo Drives Ltd before being delivered to MMRDA. Modern technology, improved strength and excellent fire resistance will all be features of the new rakes.

According to MMRDA, the maintenance costs will be lower than they were for earlier trains in Make in India initiative. Each coach currently weighs 13.5 tonnes. The load on the guideways and piers will be lessened by the new rakes’ several tonnes less weight.

An official has stated that spare maintenance parts will be easily accessible. The new bogies will also be made of stainless steel much like the metro. The capacity of the new coaches would be at least 10 percent greater than that of the existing ones which can accommodate approximately 568 passengers per train.

In order to serve busy and congested areas, the MMRDA chose to launch the 20 Km-long monorail route Chembur-Wadala-Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk as a feeder service to other transport systems. Monorail can carry 7,500 commuters per hour in each direction and has a daily capacity of 1.5 to 2 lakh people.

Several parts of the city that are not serviced by the Metro Rail or the Suburban Rail System would be connected by the Monorail. Wadala, Curry Road, and Chembur will further act as the Monorail’s linkages to the Suburban Rail Network.

KARNATAKA (Metro Rail News): The Karnataka government has finalized a tender for the construction of a 25-Km second stretch of the proposed Bengaluru Suburban Railway System valued at Rs 859 crore according to state Infrastructure and Housing Minister, V Somanna.

The basic infrastructure for the second stretch of the four-corridor suburban railway system will be finished in 27 months and electrification of the line will then be undertaken, Minister V Somanna told the Karnataka Legislative Council on 21st September. In response to a query from BJP member H.S Gopinath, he spoke.

According to Somanna, the state government has invested Rs 120 crore in the preliminary work for the suburban railway which will encircle the city over a distance of 148 kilometers. When visiting Bengaluru in June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the project which has been in the works for more than 40 years will now be finished in 40 months. Modi stated that the Bengaluru suburban train project will be finished in 40 months.

In response to Modi’s claim, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, H.D. Kumaraswamy, stated that the BJP government at the central level allocated only Rs. 1 crore for the project in 2019 against the proposed Rs. 23000 crore that had been agreed upon by the state of Karnataka and the Railways Ministry in 2019. At the time, Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister.

The project will consist of four corridors: Bengaluru City to Yelahanka to Devanahalli (41.40 km), Baiyappanahall to Chikabanavara (25.01 km), Kengeri to Whitefield (35.52 km) and Heelalige to Rajanakunte (46.24 km). This information was provided by the Infrastructure Minister in March of this year. “We have floated tenders, and a technical bid is being prepared. We will issue a work order for corridor-2 by March 31,” the minister had stated in March, noting that the suburban rail project had been delayed because of problems with land acquisition.

The goal of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project is to connect Bengaluru with the surrounding rural areas and satellite townships. The present suburban rail design calls for 57 stations to be spread across four corridors.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (KMBL) wins semi-naming rights for two future metro stations, Bandra Kurla Complex and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (erstwhile Victoria Terminus). Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has granted these rights for a period of five years beginning with the commissioning of the line expected by 2023.

These two stations are important to Kotak Group because one represents the place where Kotak was born, while the other is the location of the company’s current nerve centre. The Group started in a small office in the former Victoria Terminus area and in time developed into an integrated financial services conglomerate with its current headquarters in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

Shanti Ekambaram, Group President and Whole-Time Director Designate, said that, “The past meets the present and that too on the high-speed rails of the city’s new preferred lifeline. Winning these branding rights is a celebration of our Group’s humble beginnings at the four-storied Navsari building in Fort, CSMT area, to our current address – our twin office buildings at BKC. A blend of our Janmabhoomi and Karmabhoomi will not only resonate with the brand’s rich legacy but, more importantly will enable us to once again partner the government’s vision of inclusive growth, ease of access and community empowerment beyond banking.”

Karthi Marshan, President and CMO, Kotak Mahindra Bank said, “Kotak Mahindra Bank’s presence in the two iconic business districts will celebrate the rich heritage of the city as well as our firm belief in its future. Mumbai Metro has become a highly effective mode of transport – providing comfort, better experience and reliable performance to a new generation of Mumbaikars. The upcoming line connecting South Mumbai to BKC will attract huge footfalls and translate into eyeballs for the Bank, offering opportunities to engage, educate and elevate millions of Mumbaikars every day.”

BANGALORE (Metro Rail News): The Bengaluru Metro’s trial run of its 15-Km elevated section between Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield slated for September, has been postponed due to the city’s recent deluge, according to the metro.

Anjum Parwez said that the stretch would be open only next year. “With more monsoon showers expected, the opening of the line before the new year is unlikely. There are other depots works also wherein we have to set up a ramp to bring the train to the depot at Baiyappanahalli. Public can use the line in February 2023, if all things go well,” he said.

The trial run should start by the middle of October, “Due to monsoon, the trial run that was supposed to happen this month was postponed. It will now take place in the middle of October. The manual trolley trials, which are typically conducted prior to experimenting with trains, have already begun. He said that the train trials would last for at least two months, until December.

The much-awaited, extended purple line between Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield is expected to benefit around three lakh passengers.
