100% tunnelling of Mumbai Metro Line-3

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) ultimately finished the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro 3 project’s tunnelling construction on November 29, providing a significant boost to the opening of Mumbai’s first underground Metro train service.

The Mumbai Central Metro Station’s Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Tansa 1 achieved the last tunnelling breakthrough. Civil engineering breakthrough occurs when a TBM is lowered into a specific shaft, successfully navigates the specified geological route, and exits at the intended location.

The challenging drive of 837 m from Mahalaxmi Metro Station to Mumbai Central Metro Station upline in 243 days, utilising 558 concrete rings, resulted in the 42nd TBM breakthrough.

“It was with great pleasure that I witnessed the final breakthrough today. It marks 100 per cent tunnelling of Metro 3 corridor. Tunnelling below Mumbai’s heritage precincts, nearby of old dilapidated buildings, existing Metro line, railway lines and water body with different and sometimes difficult geological conditions, has been a daunting task,” said Ashwini Bhide, MD of MMRCL.

“We used advanced technology without compromising on the safety of workers. This was a daunting task for the MMRCL team, along with general consultants, contractors and joint ventures. Once operational, Metro 3 aims to provide a speedy, comfortable and safe commuting experience to the Mumbaikars,” said S K Gupta, Director (Projects), MMRCL.

The tunnelling of the entire line is finished as a result of the breakthrough. As a result, the project is progressing by 76.6 per cent overall.

17 TBMs were primarily used in Metro 3’s tunnelling, which covered a 33.5-km underground stretch.
After the first TBM arrived on September 5, 2017, and was dropped into the Naya Nagar shaft on September 21, the tunnelling operation officially started five years ago.

Phase 1 of the line, which would run from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is anticipated to open to the public by 2023 once tunnelling work is finished. By 2024, it is anticipated that the second section from BKC to Cuffe Parade will be operational.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar, Andheri West) and Line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East), both elevated corridors passing from Link Road and Western Express Highway (WEH), are currently under the supervision of the Commission of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Commissioner S V R Srinivas said, “A team from CMRS is carrying out the supervision. Once the safety clearance certificate is in place the commercial operations can begin.”
Maharashtra has designated the MMRDA as the nodal agency for all elevated metro projects.
Before opening the corridor to passengers, the CMRS certification comprises supervision of the rails, signalling, electrical systems, and civil works. In addition, the responsible authority meticulously conducts a safety inspection.

The MMRDA had already received a provisional certificate from the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) for carrying out a trial run before the supervision of the CMRS.

Dahisar and DN Nagar are connected by Mumbai Metro Line 2A, while Line 7 runs 35 km from Dahisar East to Andheri East. But, first, a 20-kilometre section between Aarey and Dhanukarwadi was made accessible to the general public in April for Gudi Padwa, the Hindu New Year. According to MMRDA data, the 20-km stretch has a healthy average daily ridership of 27,000 and an average monthly ridership of 8 lakh.

SIA for SilverLine awaits Railway Board permission

KERALA (Metro Rail News): The state government formally postponed the social impact assessment (SIA) for the proposed SilverLine semi-high-speed railway project until it receives Railway Board permission. As a result, the revenue officers assigned to set the boundary stones will be called back.

Earlier, the administration claimed that laying boundary stones was a component of the SIA for land acquisition, which led to widespread protests across the state. For the project, 1,221 acres of property in 11 districts had to be purchased.

Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) A Jayathilak has written to the Land Revenue Commissioner and collectors of 11 districts, asking them to recall the staff and submit proposals for their redeployment for specific projects.

Justice Devan Ramachandran said the petitioners need not have any apprehensions regarding the project as no new notification for SIA has been issued after the expiry of the last one, the DPR, and the Centre has not approved the land acquisition.

Therefore, no orders are required to be passed in the petitions in the present situation, he had said. However, the court said the petitioners could revive their pleas in case of any new development in connection with the project.

The districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod currently employ the recalled officers.

On September 26, the Kerala High Court dismissed various petitions contesting the social impact study and the laying of boundary stones, stating that the Center had not yet approved the semi-high-speed rail corridor’s detailed project report (DPR).

However, the state administration is still moving through with its large-scale initiative.
K N Balagopal, the finance minister, had recently discussed the matter with Nirmala Sitharaman, the union finance minister. At the pre-budget consultation, the state’s wish list was presented to the Union government, including the sanction for SilverLine.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), creating the ambitious Delhi-Meerut RRTS, is awaiting Central permission for the project’s second route. The multi-modal project, with a cost estimate of ₹25,000 crores, is expected to be partially operational next year.
According to NCRTC managing director Vinay Kumar Singh, the company submitted the detailed project report (DPR) to the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) for the 107-km corridor from Delhi to SNB (Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behrod) in January 2019. The Center, and the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan are partners in the NRCTC. Next year, it is anticipated that the project will be partially operational.

“The second project we had submitted the DPR in January 2019 to MoHUA. They have not yet sanctioned it. The moment they sanction, we will start work. We have done all the utility diversion plans, tree cutting permissions are there, and road widening has been done,” he said. Singh added that the shifting of drains and high-tension electricity cables has also been done on the route to start construction.

The 164-kilometer Delhi to Alwar line, which would be longer and carry 1.1 million riders daily, includes the 107-kilometer Delhi-SNB route. The first phase’s 107 km would link the industrial hubs of Gurugram, Dharuhera, and Rewari in Haryana and the Indira Gandhi International Airport on its path from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to SNB.

If permission is given immediately, Singh claimed that the part from Sarai Kale Khan to the airport may be finished by 2025. The second corridor is one of the three Phase-1 prioritised corridors, along with the current Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut and the suggested Delhi-Panipat route. However, the DPR has not yet been released for the Delhi-Panipat route.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): A Senior official stated that the railways plan to export Vande Bharat trains to markets in Europe, South America, and East Asia by 2025 or 2026. The latest version of the domestic trains with sleeping coaches will be running by the first quarter of 2024, the source added.

He also said the railways is planning to clock 10-12 lakh kilometres on 75 Vande Bharat trains over the next few years for these to be export ready. “The ecosystem to export trains has to be created over the next two to three years. We are on track to manufacture 475 Vande Bharat trains in the next three years, and once they run successfully, there will be confidence in global markets about our product.

The Vande Bharat trains meet all international standards,” he said. Talking about these trains, the official said these have a rider index of three, which means no or minimal jolts for passengers; and a noise level of 65 decibels which is 100 times less than the sound produced in aircraft.

He also said that while the present Vande Bharat trains are fit for broad gauge, the railways’ manufacturing units will customise the trains to run on standard gauges used by countries across the world.
