GUJARAT (Metro Rail News): The engineering firm Siemens won a contract to manufacture 1,200 electric locomotives with 9000 HP (horsepower) at Dahod in Gujarat for more than Rs 20,000 crore.

In April, Indian Railways floated a tender for manufacturing and maintaining 9,000 HP electric locomotives in Dahod. Alstom and Siemens were the participants.

“Siemens Limited has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the 9000 HP electric locomotives project in Dahod, Gujarat, India,” a BSE filing said.

In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the project to build 9,000 HP electric locomotives at the Dahod Railway production site.

The project was expected to cost about Rs 20,000 crore.

The Dahod workshop, founded in 1926 for routine steam locomotive maintenance, is being transformed into an electric locomotive manufacturing unit. As a result, over 10,000 individuals are anticipated to receive direct and indirect jobs.

The Dahod facility will produce 1,200 locomotives over 11 years, from 2023–2024 to 2033–2034. The winning bidder will provide five locomotives in the first year and 35 in the second. The third and fourth years will see annual deliveries of up to 80 locomotives.

In the fifth and sixth years, manufacturing will be expanded to 100 locomotives annually. After that, until 2033–2034, 160 locomotives will be produced annually.

A single 9000 HP, six-axle Co-Co locomotive will be used on all Indian Railways routes to haul loads weighing 4,500 tonnes at an average speed of 75 kmph.

The designated government depots for maintenance would be located in Kharagpur (West Bengal), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), and Pune (Maharashtra), each having a holding capacity of 300.

Indian Railway anticipates receiving its first locomotive from the Dahod site in the first quarter of 2024. The locomotive will be produced using green energy and will bear a tag that says “green manufacturing.” Dahod is a railway station on the Delhi-Mumbai route.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The construction division of Larsen and Toubro has obtained a contract from the National High-Speed Rail Corp. Ltd. (NHSRCL) to build the Sabarmati Depot (MAHSR – D-2) in Gujarat for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project through a consortium led by the Japanese company Sojitz Corporation.

“The scope of the MAHSR -D-2 package project involves design, supply, construction and testing. It also involves commissioning the depot spread over approximately 82 hectares, including various specialized equipment required to inspect and maintain the rolling stock based on the proven Shinkansen technology. Upon completion, this will be the biggest depot in India for this purpose,” L&T said in a press release.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR), often known as the Bullet Train Project, is a high-speed rail line that runs from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. In May 2022, NHSRCL awarded the railways division of L&T Construction the contract to build 116 route kilometres of high-speed ballastless track works (Package No: T3).

L&T is the industry leader in India for the ballastless track, with competence in a variety of ballastless track forms, including plinth track, slab track, low vibration track, floating slab track, PORR type precast slab track, and, as of recently, the Shinkansen type precast slab track system.

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The longest underground Metro line in Mumbai, one of the city’s most expensive transportation infrastructure projects, will finally be ready for commissioning in December 2023 after overcoming significant obstacles and a two-year delay.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) completed all the tunnelling work on 30th November. The Supreme Court cleared the way around the same time for the construction of the metro car shed at Aarey, which has been the subject of a heated political debate in the state for more than five years.

“As of now, the overall project is 77 per cent completed. We recently got the clearance for the depot and now the first phase will be commissioned by December 2023 and second phase will be functional after a lag of six months, i.e in June 2024,” said S.K. Gupta, Project Director, MMRC.

The 33.5 km Metro-3 line connects Colaba, Bandra, and Seepz. Additionally, it is the city’s first underground corridor for the new metro system. 26 of the line’s 27 stops will be subterranean. It aims to unite Mumbai’s northern and southern economic sectors, including the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Additionally, connecting to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will be the Metro line.

The route would also be convenient for commuters because it will connect with the trains, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), and other metro lines still being developed at eight locations.

The trains running underground will have to coordinate with the signalling systems, and all technologies must communicate with every other part, which will be a challenge, said Gupta.

NAGPUR (Metro Rail News): Nagpur Metro has constructed the longest double-decker viaduct (metro), measuring 3,140 metres, on the Wardha Road in Nagpur, setting a new Guinness World Record in the process.

Three metro stations on the 3.14 km double-decker viaduct on Wardha Road are Chhatrapati Nagar, Jai Prakash Nagar, and Ujjwal Nagar. To meet the functional requirements of the metro, these stations need unique planning that is station-specific and considers site-specific restrictions and requirements for double-decker viaducts. As a result, these stations’ engineering thought processes, ideas, design, and implementation are complicated.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, applauded the effort of Nagpur Metro and tweeted, “Another feather in the cap ! Heartiest Congratulations to Team NHAI and Maha Metro on achieving the Guinness Book of World Record in Nagpur by constructing thelongest Double Decker Viaduct (3.14 KM) with Highway Flyover & Metro Rail Supported on single column.”

“The project has already bagged records from Asia Book and India Book. Now receiving this eminent award is indeed a proud moment for us. I heartily thank & salute the incredible Engineers, Officers & Workers who persevered round the clock to make this happen,” Nitin Gadkari said in another tweet.

“The double-decker viaduct of 3.14 km on the Wardha Road in Nagpur, Maharashtra was commissioned by Metro Rail traffic on 5 March 2019 and for Highway traffic on 13 November 2020, is the Longest Double Decker Viaduct on any Metro Rail system,” according to a statement by the Guinness World Records, London.
