RITES & DMRC sign MoU for exploring Metro works 

As per the release RITES Ltd., a leading transport infrastructure consultancy, on 3 October 2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is renowned for operating and maintaining Delhi’s extensive metro rail network. Through this MoU, both organisations will combine their strengths to identify, secure, and execute metro projects in India and abroad.

11 Firms Submit Bids For Lucknow Metro Line-2’s Geotechnical Contract

Lucknow (Metro Rail News): A total of Eleven firms have submitted bids to carry out geotechnical soil investigation for the Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project spanning 11.165 km . 

In August 2024 UPMRC invited bids for its geotechnical investigation with an estimated budget of Rs. 77.21 lakh and a 90 day deadline. Furthermore,the technical bids were opened on 1 October to reveal the name of bidders. 

Scope of work

The contractor appointed for Package LKGS-01 will conduct a Detailed Geo-Technical Survey for the East-West Corridor of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project Phase 1B, stretching from Charbagh to Vasantkunj, including the Depot at Hardoi Road.

This survey will involve subsurface investigations to evaluate soil properties and groundwater conditions, providing essential data for the design and construction phases of the project.

Thane (Metro Rail News): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. ( Maha Metro) floated a tender for appointing a general consultant for the Thane Metro Project. Maha-metro posted a primary tender notice regarding the contract on the same day.

Scope of work:

The appointed general consultant will be responsible for providing consultancy services in design, supervision, safety, quality control and contract management for the Thane Metro Project.

Thane Metro project 

Thane Metro, officially known as Thane Integral Ring Metro is a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) approved by MMRCL in August 2024 with an estimated budget of Rs. 12,200 crore.

Thane metro consists of 1 corridor spanning 29 km through 22 stations in which 20 stations will be elevated while remaining 2 stations will be underground.

Bangalore Metro (Metro Rail News): Four firms have submitted bids for the installation of electrical and mechanical (E&M) systems at the Airport and Challaghatta depots of Bangalore Metro, after the opening of technical bids on 1st October 2024, by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

 Bidders who have submitted the bids are: 

  • Blue Star Ltd.
  • Jackson Ltd. 
  • Toyota Tsusho India Pvt. Ltd.
  • URC Construction Pvt. Ltd. 

The lowest bidder is yet to be announced. It will take months to finalise the contractor. The bids have been sent for technical evaluation, and after that financial round will reveal the lowest bidder. 

Work scope 

Package 3 for both depots (Airpot and Challaghatta) includes installation of systems such as electrical, cables, lighting, fire safety, HVAC works and UPS system installation. 

Electrical and Mechanical (E and M) Works Comprising of L.T. Panels, L.T. Cables, Lighting, Hydraulics, Fire Safety Systems, UPS, DG Sets, HVAC for Depots at Challaghatta (Ph-2) and Airport (Ph-2B) under Package-3 of BMRCL Project Phase-2 and 2B.

Package 3 comprises of electrical and mechanical work of both the depot stations on different lines on Bangalore Metro Phase 2.  

Construction Contracts for Challaghatta & Airport Depot

With a contract of Rs. 499.41 crore that was given in October 2022, RITES – Power Mech Projects JV is now building the Challaghatta Depot along Mysore Road for the 8.814 km Purple Line as part of the Bangalore Metro Phase 2 project.

In March 2023, J Kumar Infraprojects – AIC Infrastructures JV was given a contract of Rs. 182.33 crore to construct the Airport Depot at Doddajala, also known as Shettigere, for the Blue Line’s Bangalore Metro Phase 2B project.

KEC & BNC Secures Electrification Contracts of Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2

Nagpur Metro (Metro Rail News): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL or Maha-Metro) announced that KEC International Ltd. and BNC Power Projects Ltd. (BNCPPL) had become the lowest bidders for the electrification contracts TR-02 & TR-03 respectively of the 43.8 km Nagpur Metro Phase 2 project.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB)  will be financing  Maha-Metro’s contracts with USD 200 million about Rs.1678 crore.

In December 2023, Mahametro invited bids for Package TR-02 with an estimated cost of Rs. 205 crore, and the deadline was 3.4 years. 

In June 2024, technical bids were opened to reveal the 5 bidders for this package. 

When Maha Metro opened financial bids, KEC International Ltd. was declared the lowest bidder with a total cost of Rs. 207.36 crore. 

Work Scope for the Project: The appointed contractor for Package TR-02 will be responsible for installing posts and 25kV flexible overhead equipment (OHE) in all at-grade and elevated project sections. 

Mahametro issued the notice and described the design, supply, installation, testing & commissioning of 25kV flexible OHE and sectioning posts for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project, Phase-2.

Package TR-03 ( Nagpur Metro Phase 2): 

In February 2024, Maha-Metro issued bids for Package TR-03, with an estimated cost of Rs. 344 crore and a deadline of 3.45 years. 

In August 2024, Maha Metro opened technical bids for package TR-03 and revealed 6 bidders for the package.

BNC Power Projects Ltd. became the lowest bidder with the total amount of Rs.381 crore. 

The work scope for package-TR-03  includes designing, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning receiving cum auxiliary main cum traction substations for the Nagpur Metro Rail Phase-2 Project, along with managing the 33 kV cable network, ASS, and SCADA system.

Hence, Maha Metro is progressing well with all the construction work. Many projects have been awarded and many have yet to be completed. 

MMRCL has so far opened financial bids for 4 system-related packages of Phase 2 – the others are E&M-02 (won by Colossus Infra) T-01 (won by Rahee Infratech) and so on.

NCRTC Partners with PTC India For Sustainable Power For RRTS Corridor

As Per The Release National Capital Regional Transportation Corporation (NCRTC) has signed an agreement with PTC India Limited (Power Trading Corporation), a leading provider of power trading solutions, for the procurement of low-cost power, including green energy, through power exchanges for the RRTS corridor.

The agreement was signed between NCRTC and PTC India in the presence of Shri Shalabh Goel, Managing Director of NCRTC and Shri Manoj Jhawar, CMD of PTC, and other senior officers from both sides.

Shri Shalabh Goel, Managing Director of NCRTC, said, “A capital-intensive project like RRTS needs to be sustainable in the longer term. We are pleased to partner with PTC India in managing our energy needs. NCRTC is committed to finding innovative and sustainable solutions. This agreement marks a significant milestone in our efforts to secure reliable and cost-effective power, including green energy, to reduce the carbon footprint.”

This collaboration will enable NCRTC to meet part of its power requirement sourcing through power exchanges at its Receiving Substations (RSS) located in Ghaziabad, Modipuram, Shatabdi Nagar, and Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh, as well as Sarai Kale Khan (SKK) in Delhi.

This agreement is part of NCRTC’s broader strategy to adopt innovative methods for ensuring efficient operation of RRTS corridors and NamoBharat trains. PTC India will act as NCRTC’s trading partner, facilitating power procurement. The phased implementation of power trading will begin with the already commissioned section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor, with plans to expand as full operations are progressively rolled out.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Phase II: 116.2 km Expansion Project Estimated at ₹32,000 Crore, Including Extension to ‘Fourth City’

Hyderabad (Metro Rail News): Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) is proposing to extend the metro rail from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to the proposed ‘Fourth City’ in Mucherla spanning 40 km. 

The new rail line project is expected to cost ₹8,000 crore. The final Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be submitted to the Telangana government by the end of October. 

The proposed 40 km metro extension, estimated to cost ₹8,000 crore, will feature a mix of underground, elevated, and at-grade sections. The alignment includes a 2 km underground stretch near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), 20 km of elevated track, and 18 km at road level. This metro extension will be integrated with a larger greenfield road project aimed at improving connectivity to the rapidly developing Skill University area in Mucherla. 

The airport metro extension is a key component of the larger 116.2 km Hyderabad Metro Phase II project, which is estimated to cost ₹32,237 crore. This phase includes five additional metro corridors, accounting for ₹24,237 crore of the total cost. 

Managing Director of the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited ( HAML) stated, “We changed the alignment as there is a lot of activity on the Bengaluru highway. Around 5,000 flats are being constructed in this area,”

The proposed metro line from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) will extend to Pedda Golconda, where it will connect to the ‘Fourth City’ via the Outer Ring Road (ORR), passing over areas like Tukkuguda and Raviryal. The alignment will run at ground level between the ORR and its service roads up to the Future City. 

Finalisation of DPRs and Approval Process

The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the proposed metro extension are currently in the final stages of preparation. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is conducting a traffic study as part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) to assess transit demand and optimise the metro alignment. Once the CMP report is completed, the DPRs will be submitted for approval by the central government. 

During a recent meeting, HAML Managing Director NVS Reddy presented the alignment details and proposed station locations, highlighting key aspects of the project and its integration with the city’s transportation infrastructure.

Kolkata (Metro Rail News): The West Bengal government has taken a major step by suspending the 150-year-old tram services in Kolkata on all routes except for one route from Esplanade to Maidan. 

Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty mentioned that commuters’ demand for faster modes of transport has been increasing lately. Furthermore, he stated that trams often cause congestion on roads due to their slow speed.

Udit Ranjan Gupta of the Calcutta Tram Users’ Association (CUTA) expressed his grief by stating that trams have played a major role in Kolkata’s heritage and the suspension of their services would be a major setback. He mentioned “The trams will tell the story of a mode of primary transport that is the oldest companion of our city to have survived,”

About Kolkata Trams: 

The British government introduced the Trams in Kolkata on 24 February 1873. Later the trams operated in many more cities like Patna, Chennai, Nasik, and Mumbai but were phased out.

Kolkata’s trams lasted 150 years. In 1882, steam engines were introduced, which resulted in the evolution of trams in Kolkata. In 1900, the first electricity-powered tram became operational. Furthermore, AC Trams were introduced in 2013.

Pune (Metro Rail News): Finally the wait is over. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the underground section of Pune Metro’s Purple Line from the civil court to Swargate, which spans 3.3 km, on 29 September. This section includes three underground stations: Kasbhapeth (earlier Budhwar Peth), Mandai and Swargate.

Furthermore, he also laid the foundation stone for Pune Metro Phase 1A, which comprises the Purple Line’s extension from Swargate to Katraj, spanning 5.46km.

With this development, the entire Pune Metro Phase 1 has come to an end, and finally, the operations have begun on the Purple Line from Civil Court to Swargate. Now, the operational length of the Purple Line is 16.59 km from PCMC to Swargate.

Pune Metro Phase 1 consists of two corridors (Line 1& Line 2) spanning 31.254 km with 29 stations in total.  

  • Line 1 (Purple Line): Line 1 spans 16.59 km, providing seamless connectivity between Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and Swargate through 12 stations. 
  • Phase 1A: Phase 1A consists of an extension of the Purple Line from Swargate to Katraj, spanning 5.464 km with three stations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for the same.
  • Line 2 (Aqua Line): Line 2 provides connectivity from Vanaz to Ramwadi, spanning 14.665 km via 16 stations. 

Till date, Pune Metro has become the 9th largest metro system with a 31.25km long network beating the Noida Metro system.

At the UIC Sustainability Impact Awards 2024 held in Berlin, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) earned two prestigious accolades: the Overall Winner Award and the Best Transit Award for Seamless Connectivity. NCRTC was recognised for its environmentally sustainable initiatives and innovative transportation solutions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

At InnoTrans 2024, Shri Shalabh Goel, MD of NCRTC, acknowledged the International Union of Railways (UIC) prizes in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Foundation. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN and UIC’s 2030 vision, “Design a Better Future,” are the awards’ central elements.

Other Firms in the event 

Major rail operators like Korea Railroad Corporation, East Japan Railway Company, DB Cargo Group, and others were among the 17 finalist projects from 15 countries that were showcased at the awards event. The competition highlights the need for sustainable rail transportation and the world’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Shri Shalabh Goel, MD, NCRTC, stated, “These awards are a testament to NCRTC’s innovative approach to extensive multimodal integration, connecting RRTS stations with existing public transport modes such as MRTS, buses, and railway stations, along with various first- and last-mile connectivity options. It also highlights our sustained focus on commuter-centricity through the adoption of advanced technological solutions, including the world’s first-ever deployment of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 Hybrid Level 3 signalling over LTE, which enables seamless interoperability across upcoming RRTS corridors. The recognition further serves as a tribute to the valuable contributions of various stakeholders, particularly the Government of India, which has developed transformative ecosystems that have facilitated the rapid implementation of such mobility solutions.”

Green Energy and Sustainable Urban Development

The RRTS project contributes to nine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including gender equality, sustainable energy, and combating climate change. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor specifically aligns with goals for health, well-being, and clean energy by reducing vehicle emissions by 250,000 tons annually.

Through renewable energy initiatives, NCRTC supports the Affordable and Clean Energy goal as part of India’s National Solar Mission. The aim is to generate 11 MW of solar power on rooftops over the next five years, significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Promoting “Make In India”

The “Made in India” initiative gave rise to RRTS technology, advancing regional business and elevating global project standards. The Delhi-Meerut RRTS would improve connectivity and mobility throughout the National Capital Region by connecting to upcoming routes like Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat.
