Maharashtra Government has approved India’s first-ever pod taxi project which is set to link Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will oversee the feasibility studies and detailed planning for this project which aims at tackling growing traffic congestion across the region.
The project, initiated under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, will operate on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. While MMRDA will act as the nodal agency, private firms will bring in technical expertise and investment to ensure swift execution and advanced technology integration.
Pod taxis, also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), are small, automated, driverless electric vehicles designed to carry two to six passengers at a time. Running on dedicated elevated tracks, these pods offer point-to-point service that eliminates intermediate stops and road interference.
Globally, pod taxi systems are already operating successfully in locations such as Masdar City (UAE), Heathrow Airport (UK), Suncheon City (South Korea), and Rivium (Netherlands).
