CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Indian Railway plans to build more Amrit Bharat trains. The first Amrit Bharat Train was launched on 30 December 2023 to provide cheaper non-AC services.

The trains feature LHB sleeper class, general class, and SLR coaches. They are pulled by a locomotive customised with an orange and black paint scheme and fitted with a nose cone. Operating on a push-pull method, these trains have locomotives at both ends, allowing up to 130 kmph of speed.

No. of Manufacturing Unit

  • 260 sleeper class coaches
  • 176 general coaches
  • 52 SLR coaches

Several additional amenities will be tested on the new trains, including enhanced berth aesthetics inspired by the Vande Bharat trains, upgraded toilet designs featuring bio-vacuum technology, installation of CCTV cameras, and improved ladders for accessing upper berths in sleeper-class coaches. Moreover, there is a consideration to explore the feasibility of installing an Internet of Things (IoT)-based water level monitor to regulate water usage in the toilets and washbasins onboard.

An official said the trains will be manufactured in the Rail Coach Factory, ICF (Integral Coach Factory), and Modern Coach Factory of railways. “The trains are being made because there is a demand for general-class coaches on express trains on many routes,” he added.
